"Now, Chuck, you know I don't date men," she joked, sitting down
at the table with Jasper. "You know what I want."
The bartender chuckled and went about getting the drinks. She
removed the hood, letting loose black curls that curved around
her breasts and touched her abdomen before coming to an end.
Essie rolled her eyes at Jasper.
"I started coming here when I started dating..." Her sentence
       trailed as her cheeks reddened.
She waved her hand, dismissing the thought and quickly changed
       the subject.
Pointing to a redhead in the West corner she said, "looks like
she could use some Renegade. Why don't you go see if she would
be willing to help you have fun before your wedding night?"
The bartender came back and sat the drinks on the table. He
started to walk away when he stopped and put his hand on her
       shoulder with a crooked grin.
"You must really like him," he said, looking at Jasper and then
back to Essie. "I haven't seen her hair down in quite some
       time."
She choked on the rum she had started drinking as she shook her
head in denial. He slapped her back and then walked away before
       she was able to reply.
When her throat had cleared she looked at Jasper. "The hood
would fall if my hair was up," she explained, weakly.
Though it had been the truth, the bartender's assumption caused
her to blush again. Before she could try to explain herself
more, the redheaded woman came up and put a hand on Renegade's
shoulder. She was short and stunning with blues eyes and
       shoulder length hair.
"Hey cutie, " she said, to Renegade, smiling.
Essie rolled her eyes and glanced away and continued to sip on
       the alcohol.

She came here on the regular, and she had a "usual?" This was a
lot for Jasper to process, but one thing was for sure. For all
the years she had gotten on him about his "bad habits" hers sure
seemed to be lining up with his all of a sudden... Eyes full of
Orange, blue, and purple looked on at the woman as she made
herself more comfortable, before trailing over in the direction
the woman pointed. That red headed woman... Jasper knew her. She
had made passes at him several times in the past, but he always
figured it was because she assumed he had money. She didn't seem
much like the "genuine" type. Not that Jasper was ever looking
for anything serious anyway, but he never gave the woman the
       time of day.
"Not at all!" He said with a slight laugh. "You don't date men
right? Why don't you give her a try!" He laughed out loud this
time. The thought of a Princess and such a woman as her
together... It was simply laughable! His laughter was halted
when Chuck returned with Three shots of Rum for Jasper, and a
tall ale for Essie. His comment brought Jasper's laughter back
to the surface. He looked at the woman's hair as he laughed. It
had grown longer since the last time he saw her. "You're right
Chuck! If she acts right, I just might marry her one day!" One
day entirely too soon... It was a joke, and it made the Bar
tender laugh, but both the man and the woman knew the reality of
the situation. It was no laughing matter.
It was odd that Essie felt the need to explain herself, as if he
hadn't watched her hair grow, only for her to cut it over and
over again. He started to ask her why it mattered, when the red
haired woman made her way over. When she addressed him, he
couldn't help but laugh! "Hey there!" He said in amusement. That
was probably more attention than he had ever given her, but this
time, he would play along. He patted his leg and the woman sat
across his lap. But he never looked at her. His eyes remained
settled on Essie. "My date here just pointed you out." he said
with a mischievous grin, hoping that Essie would catch his
insinuation. "She was saying that she wanted to meet you. Why
don't you tell us a little about yourself?"

"I date men! It was merely a joke. You're just butt hurt that I
am a regular here too," she replied.
She blushed ten shades of red when he pointed her out to the
woman. The woman glanced at her, considering his offer but Es
could tell that her preference was to have him. Reading too far
into his politeness, she took a seat on hits lap and folded her
legs. She was seemingly right at home on top of his thighs.
Essie should have cared but considering it was her fiance, it
bothered, even if only a little.
"As he said, 'his date'," Essie said, pointedly.
She kept eye contact with the woman without a smile intact. The
woman seemed upset but did not challenge her. After she left,
Essie remained frowning as she sipped on the rum. Suddenly, a
man wandered in. He was almost tall enough to reach the low
wooden ceiling. Without speaking, he meandered across the bar,
talking to men and women as he went.
She turned pale and turned her head after she replaced her hood.
Please don't see me, please don't see me ple-
"Addie!" he shouted in a deep voice when he spotted her.
       Damn it!
He came over to the table and lifted her out of the chair in
order to give her a tight, bear-like hug. His almost black eyes
glimmered as he sat her down on the floor. She glanced up at him
and gave him the tightest and faintest of smiles that looked
more like a dog when eating peanut butter.
"Hey... Rex," she stammered, glancing at Jasper, clearly looking
for an excuse to leave; or run out.
"How you doing?" he asked, still ignoring Jasper's existence.
"Good, just on a date," she pointed out. "Rex, Jasper, Japser,
       Rex."
Rex glanced at Jasper and half nodded and then he turned back to
Es. "I haven't seen you around. Where have you been?"
Es stuttered incoherently before noticing an open spot at table
filled with burly old men playing black jack with gold coins.
"Sorry, my turn to play," she replied.
She went and sat at the table. Rex didn't seem happy, in the
least and went over to the bar to order a couple drinks. Fifteen
minutes into the game, she was clearly winning and decides to
bet the horses without Jaspers consent. She appeared overly
confident with her winning streak and didn't seem at all
       worried.
With her cards concealed she decided to stick and when it was
time to reveal her hand, she had a perfect 21. That's when
things started to get out of hand...
Jealous Rex came over and tried to speak to her but she was too
busy celebrating her win to notice. He got angry, jerked her out
of her chair by her upper arm and lifted her into the air. He
shook her by her arm and before she had time to react, cards
started flying out of her sleeves. She turned white and the bar
got eerily silent before the men at the table started a brawl in
their attempt to catch her. Rex, stunned by the coming events,
dropped her, allowing her to flee. She went over, grabbed
Jasper, and pulled him out of the door.
The entire time, she was grinning from one ear to another.

Jasper didn't know why, but he got quite a bit of enjoyment from
Essie's aggressive glare toward the red headed woman. It was
protective, despite the disdain she had carried for him all
their lives. It was fun to watch, as her eyes threatened the
woman, as if she was marking her territory. It was hot actually!
A cheeky grin played on his face and eyes overflowed with yellow
and orange teased the woman. "You didn't have to be so mean!" He
       said with a laugh.
His turn to be protective would come soon though, as if Karma
was having a laugh at his expense, a rather large man came, and
literally lifted his fiancee out of her seat. Under her real
name, the man could be put to death for such action... His fists
tightened, but when Essie looked to him for help, he couldnt'
help but to consider leaving her to squirm. He didn't like the
guys familiarity with her though, as much as he hated to admit
it. By the time Essie spoke to introduce the two, Jasper was
already on his feet, his hand extended to greet the man with a
far more powerful handshake than expected; One that actually
caused the burly man quite a bit of pain, though he didn't show
       it.
The man then boldly turned back to Essie, as if the she hadn't
just told him she was on a date. "Oh I can answer that one!"
Jasper said. His voice was high and spirited like a child
answering a question in class. "She's been at my house." His
voice was no longer excited now. It was deep, and threatening.
When the man looked back at him, he would see eyes of blood red,
that dared him to bother the Princess again. Seeming to get the
hint, he meandered off to a bar, grumbling something incoherent
       along the way.
Then Essie went off too. Off to gam ble? Jasper had to admit, he
liked the side of her that he was seeing. He turned his back and
leaned his elbow against the table to watch the game, keen eyes
catching on to what was happening very early. Maybe marrying her
wouldn't be as bad as he thought... Not that they would be able
to do things like this after their wedding... Or even after the
announcement! Everyone who knew them by their alias names would
know their true identities on that day...
But then she got bold, and bet the horses! That kind of
inconsideration was infuriating! But at the same time, the
spontaneity was a turn on! Jasper was unsure what to think...but
for the time being, he prepared to slip outside and grab the
horses in case things didn't go well.
And boy didn't they... Jasper was preparing to knock the large
man on his ass when all hell broke loose! In the frenzy, the two
escaped to the horses, and out into the night! It wasn't like
they needed her winnings anyway! This time, Jasper took the
lead, Shadow carrying him up the mountain so quickly that the
wind blew his hat off his head and back down the mountain. When
they reached the peak, he stopped, and tied the horse to a tree,
laughing aloud all the while. "You know we'll never be allowed
       back there again, right?"

       ---------------------------------------------------------
For a reason unbeknownst to her, Jasper had extended a
protective aura as he stood up to the man. It was difficult to
keep a straight face through his performance as she watched the
man before him squirm in his large boots.
       Performance.
That's all that it was. But she could have sworn his actions
imitated sincerity. As always, Essie was probably looking too
deep and thinking too far. She was under the assumption that he
had only stood up for her since she was his future wife, not
       because he cared for her.
There was no time to entertain the true motive behind his
character. The fight had dispersed a multitude of drunken
violence which quickly sent the two royals out the door and onto
their horses' backs to escape it.
Her horse was less than a foot behind Shadow as they galloped
over the mountainside. When they came to a stop, Essie was
laughing uncontrollably and leaning over the horse's neck,
trying to catch her breath. The laughter subsided quickly and
she shook her head in a negative gesture that agreed with his
       statement.
"You doubt my charm," she replied, tidying up the wild strands
of hair around her head. "I could win over a mercenary with a
       simple bat of my eyes."
She turned her head toward him, batting her lashing in an
exaggerated example. Then, she grew quiet and glanced over the
land before them. She soon sighed, expelling the stress of her
       wandering thoughts.
"Thanks, for earlier," she said, looking up from under her
lashes at him. "He's an ass."
Essie got down off of her horse and tied it beside Shadow. Idly,
she played with its mane with her head bent and her hair
throwing shadows over her eyes as it blocked out the moonlight.
She removed her fingers from the horse and worked the strings of
her corset so that it loosened enough for her to remove it. The
white, long-sleeved shirt that remained was tight enough to hug
her breasts but it was loose around her stomach, giving her air
to breathe that the corset failed to. She placed the corset in
the compartment on the saddle and then folded her arms and
       glanced at Jasper.
"Renegade, huh?" she inquired, arching a single brow as she
smirked. "You do know the definition of a renegade, right? Kind
of ironic being a future king and all..."
As she held his gaze, it suddenly dawned on her why he was
notorious with the ladies. It was the alarming colors of his
eyes. They constantly gave away his secrets, something that many
would have despised but he was indifferent on the matter. Jasper
never appeared to mind people knowing how he felt, and she
thought he was even empowered by the fact. But more than that,
the colors swirled relentlessly but not without purpose. It
seemed like an unspoken challenge, who could make his eyes turn
a color that would compromise all other colors that had ever
       touched his eyes.
She frowned and glanced away, not wanting to draw attention to
       herself by staring.

The shades of yellow that filled Jasper's eyes upon their
arrival were indicative of happiness, fun, and excitement. He
was also in the midst of a fit of laughter as the woman told him
of the capabilities of her "charm." When she batted her eyes at
him in a clearly over-dramatized manner, he feigned a trance,
walking toward her like a brainwashed junkie. "Can't...
resist... eyelashes..." He said, teasing her for her act, but
when he arrived directly in front of her, his smile faded.
Shades of pink flooded into his irises, as if being poured in
from a pitcher. For a moment, he truly fell into the trance he
had faked. It was certain that he would kiss her in that moment.
He quickly snapped out of it, however, taking two quick steps
away from her, and walking over to a clear spot, where he could
sit down and overlook the mountains, with the Kingdom at the
bottom. He patted the spot next to him as Essie thanked him for
his assistance earlier. "It's nothing." He told her. It was best
if she thought he just did it as a favor to his future wife,
than that he had any feelings in the matter himself.
He laughed when Essie asked him if he knew the definition of the
word "Renegade." But when his laughter stopped, a deep blue
color spread from the center of his eyes, filling them
completely. "It's funny. They came up with the same name for me
in the Castle, because I have a tendency to disappear at
important moments." He paused for just a second as another
thought inturrupted his process. "Usually to go to the very
place you just got me banned from. Maybe I'll buy the place so I
can go back..." He shook his head and continued. "Anyway, I know
I won't be able to live that way forever. But It's nice being
able to get out. To be someone else, if only for a little while.
Isn't that right, Adelaide?" He looked over to Essie with eyes
hopeful that they would be met with understanding. At the end of
the day, she was the only person in the world who could truly
       relate to him, after all...

Essie caught the look in his eyes. Whether it was the training
of a future leader or simply a woman's intuition, she did not
know but she recognized his pause and his stance before she
could notice the distinct pink of his eyes. Even in the dimmed
moonlight, they shown brightly. Then, he turned and changed his
       demeanor abruptly.
She purposely glanced at the ground in front of her toes. If he
had acted on it, would she have allowed him to kiss her?
Perhaps, in order to begin to establish comfort on a physical
level. Still, did she want to, just for any other reason? The
answer was clear to her but she would not make it known to him.
Silently, she went to the spot he invited her to sit at and sat
with her knees bent against her chest. Essie laid her chin upon
the curves of her knees, looking across the land. Her gaze
lifted when he laughed but her expression was void of humor as
the color of his eyes changed once again. His expression sobered
while he spoke, calling for all seriousness.
In response, she nodded and looked away, unable to hold his gaze
when his eyes impacted her so. And it wasn't due to their color
either, but because of the openness that they conveyed.
"Someone I'm not?" she nodded. "There's no room inside of the
castle or under a crown, to be anything but perfect. Don't get
me wrong, I am honored to serve as their leader but I can't help
but want more for myself sometimes. Like being able to choose my
own clothes or fall in love spontaneously, not like-..."
She stopped, aware of the fact that she had forgotten herself.
Yet, he had to feel the same! She was looking at him, hoping he
       wasn't offended by her words.
"I mean, not like you're not handsome, smart, outgoing,
       funny..."
She was realizing his qualities as they passed her lips. She
       blinked.
"But just not what I had expected for my husband, " she said,
coyly as to not have to explain the truth but not telling a lie
       either.
He could take it as a good or a bad thing, but she wasn't in the
       position to imply either one.

What was he thinking?! Jasper knew Essie was attractive. He had
known since they were kids! He loved being close to her! But she
could never know that! It was better for her to go on hating
him; To go on thinking he hated her! That was the only way to
       keep this thing going.
Jasper's eyes were unable to maintain a lie. In order for him to
convince Essie that his disdain for her mirrored her own for
him, he had to convince himself that it was true. He had done so
for years, though he secretly admired her for her ability to so
well mirror the expectations the Royals had of her. He saw
strength in that. But he also found it annoying. So he focused
on that, and teased her for being a goody goody. But on this day
she proved him wrong. She proved she could roll with the big
dogs, and come out on top! How could he continue his charade
       now?There was only one way...
::What did you expect from your husband?::
Those were the words he wanted to speak to her. In their entire
lives, Jasper and Essie had not shared a moment of sincerity
such as this one. He wanted it to continue, to know what she
dreamed of for herself, and not just what was decided for her.
But that wasn't an option.... "As if you could manage to pull
off a husband of my caliber without being assigned! You should
be grateful to your parents!" Jasper knew how to say it in a way
that Essie would know he was just teasing, but he didn't. He was
as conceited and abnoxious in his tone as he knew how to be. It
was the only thing he could do at this point to protect himself.

She did not react to his comment. Rather, there was an alarming
void of expression detailed across her face as she stared at
him. The thing he had said with a sharpened tongue left her
silent and withdrawn. Why was he like that? One moment bearable
and the next, an asshole. Her eyebrows fell forward as she
contemplated over the past few hours. There was no reason she
had given him to act this way, none in the least.
Was he just so upset with the arranged marriage that he needed
to lash out on her? Or was he scared?
Her face had gained minimal discomfort as her head dipped with
her lips in a frown. A sigh slipped her mouth as her fingers
toyed with a loose string on her shirt. Essie didn't know how to
handle the situation because she wasn't certain of the reasons
for his cold exterior. Anger was certainly a possibility, but
one she refused to succumb to.
Instead, she looked up at him, her lashes distorting the hints
of moonlight that brushed the irises of her eyes and replied, "I
       am."
It hadn't been a complete lie, not really. She wasn't happy
being forced into a loveless marriage but Jasper was a great
ally to have. But that was it, he wasn't her friend and he was
often cruel towards her. It had been one thing when they were
kids, but now it really conveyed his opinion about her. Was she
       really that bad?
In spite of his attitude, she had a lot of respect for him and
she was at least trying to compromise with him to make this
       work.
She stood, looking away from him. Maybe, they would be like
other royals who participated in open marriages. The thought of
it wasn't ideal but she didn't see any other way to make him
       happy either.
A trumpet sounded in the distance, drawing her attention to the
direction of the castle. Perhaps, they had discovered the
       missing prince and princess?
"Duty calls," she muttered to herself and went to her horse's
       side.
Once the horse was untied, she mounted and grasped onto the
reigns. She didn't wait for him as she took off toward the
       castle.

Jasper hated when she was like that. He could deal with when she
was angry, and combative. He even rather enjoyed it! But when
she was silent and reserved, it made him feel a pain in his
chest that he couldn't explain. Her aura radiated of hurt. He
didn't want to hurt her. Only to keep her at a distance. And
then the words flowed from her lips...
       "I am."
He couldn't stop himself from turning his head toward her any
more than he could stop his reflective blue eyes from shifting
to a dark, faded one. It wasn't fair! Why couldn't she just
maintain things the way they had always been!? Jasper heard the
sound of the bells. He heard Essie's call to return. He even
heard her horse trot away, but he didn't move. Only lay on his
back and close his eyes. It wasn't that he was sleepy though...
It was his attempt to hide the dark grey that his eyes had
taken. Though Essie was gone, he couldn't help but feel her
staring into his eyes, reading everything that they portrayed...
And though he never shared the meanings behind the colors his
eyes took on, some were just obvious... He remained atop the
mountain for hours, thinking about the rest of his life. He
would have to come to terms with the fact that things were
changing, and they would never return to the way they were...
