       ---------------------------------------------------------
Winter had now been in school for an entire year. It had passed
by quickly, too quickly some days. She immensely enjoyed reading
and studying while the other activities she had been left
wanting. Combative training had never intrigued her and although
she was good at it, she didn't care to try. It angered her
trainers, but eventually they had learned to let it go and leave
       her be.
Winter had began noticing the opposite sex although they hardly
took a second glance at the girl whose nose was buried in a
book. Often, Jake would make a snide comment or go out of his
way to shove her. Not once did she fight back. It seemed
pointless to confront him about it when it risked her chance of
graduating at the most prestige school in the country.
Aside from her books, she had no other way of passing extra
time. She found herself missing her family some days, especially
when it snowed. Her father was the one she missed the most in
spite of all the letters they had written back and forth.
Her father had snuck a dragon egg in her trunk before she had
left for school. For the first few days, she found herself at
war with her emotions for the creature. But, after a while she
had grown attached to it and when it had hatched, she was very
glad he had given it to her.
Her dragon was black with crimson on the tips of its scales.
Although he was demanding and often robbed her of reading time,
he was worth it. The school was kind enough to allow him to take
shelter in the stables during storms since he had developed a
deep fear for thunderclaps. That was, until he started to eat
       the horses.
Although, he was not fully grown, he took up a ton of room. She
had yet to ride him, but they spent plenty of time bonding
beneath the trees as she read to him. His favorite author so far
was Shakespeare. It suited him well since his name was Titinius.
Winter was also experiencing an 'off' period with her powers.
She had kept it to herself, but lately she had been having...
accidents. One night, she had accidentally frozen the majority
of her room during a nightmare. Another, she had encased herself
in a tomb of ice. It would pass, she was certain, but until it
did she had to be cautious of what she did.

       ---------------------------------------------------------
Another year passed.... Another year with perfect marks. Senrei
was a flawless student. It was to be expected. Why attend School
if you weren't going to put your all into it? The area he didn't
excel in, was social life. He had no friends, no one he cared to
spend time with at least. Other students often wanted him for a
partner when it came to assignments, or group activities, but
even he knew that was because being paired with him meant an
       instant A.
Jason spent the entire year picking on that girl, trying to get
her attention. But she never awarded it to him. Senrei never
spoke to her, since that first day that he held the door open
for her, but he had kept an eye on her. He couldn't help but
feel that she was similar to him. She was a stellar student,
like him, possibly better! There were rumors that the
Administrators were considering skipping her a year! She mostly
kept to herself, despite having two roommates who cared for her
deeply. She always had a book with her. They were her go to.
Senrei couldn't relate to that. He preferred interacting with
nature over spending his time in the books.
The most peculiar thing about her was the dragon that the
Administrators allowed her to keep. Well, she wasn't the only
student who was raising a beast of some sort, but hers was
definitely the largest. Rumor had it she was the daughter of
some famous Draconian, which meant she and that Dragon would one
day become one being. There was probably no way to separate
       them, in that case.
Senrei was busy among the trees. It was field day, one of a
handful of days that the students had free of classes, lessons
and assignments. Many of the students chose to have mock
battles, as if they didn't get enough of that on regular days.
Senrei wasn't like the others. He preferred to watch everyone
from a distance. The longer he spent around the plants, the more
they seemed to shine and flourish. One day he would accomplish
his goals, and his homeland would shine in the same way...

Her fingers worked delicately to turn another worn page of her
favorite book. The outside air was crisp, filling her nostrils
with scents of pine needles and promises of a possible rain
shower. Before she was able to pick up on the next sentence,
Winter felt the ache in her neck. How long had she sat there?
Two, three hours? With a frown, she closed the book and stood up
beneath the tree. Her legs and butt had become numb enough to
keep her from walking for a few moments. The girl tucked the
book against her chest and took a moment to assess her
       surroundings.
Students were enjoying their free time by talking to one another
or challenging each other to spars. None of it interested her.
Then, she saw Senrei within the trees alone. She frowned
curiously and slowly made her way over to him.
       "Hey," she greeted.
Until now, she had not spoken to him really. When she had seen
him around campus, he had been alone and uninterested in the
other students' activities. He was polite though and whenever
they crossed paths he would occasionally offer her a quick nod.
Winter leaned her shoulder against a tree as she offered him a
       small smile.
       "How are you?" she asked.

Fox ears atop Senrei's head twitched when they heard the girl's
voice. He turned to see who was behind him only to find that it
was winter. His tail rolled into a ball and flattened against
his back as his eyes settled on her. "Hello Winter." He said
calmly, watching as she rested her back against her tree, before
looking up the base toward the top of the tree. It didn't seem
to mind, so he didn't object.
"It's nice to have a break." He told her. "I had a slight ankle
injury that I've now had time to treat and allow to heal." He
extended and flexed his left ankle, as if examining it's
recovery for a moment. "What about you? Enjoying having some
peace and quiet?" He took a seat on the ground, cross legged,
and a butterfly made its way over, landing on his ear. A quick
twitch sent the purple butterfly on it's way. Senrei wasn't very
good at idle conversation, but he would attempt it, if only for
       his fellow white haired scholar.

A smile transpired as she watched his ears give way to subtle
movements. The unique characteristics of the boy was
entertaining and they intrigued her. The mention of his hurt
ankle distracted her from admiring him and left a small frown on
       her mouth.
Winter ignored her question as she left her position by the tree
in order to get a better look at his ankle. Of course, she could
see little from her standpoint, but that still did not hinder
       her.
"Does it hurt, still? If need be, I could heal it," she
suggested, though there was a hitch of hesitation in her voice.
Her abilties had been out of whack as of late and if she tried
to heal it, she may end up making a mockery out of herself. But,
the fact was not enough to change her mind. Remembering his
       earlier question, she shrugged.
"I suppose. It gives me more time to read," she replied.
Normally, she would have deflected his question to avoid
mentioning her 'nerd' side as Jake had put it. It was sad that
someone felt pressured to had such a pleasure. Should it not be
gratified since it enhanced wisdom? But no, not with the
majority of her generation. Noticing the butterfly, the smile
returned briefly as she awaited his reply.

Senrei was surprised when Winter offered to heal his ankle. She
was a medic as well? There were very few classes that focused on
such skills. She was truly a woman of many talents. Nonetheless,
Senrei shook his head. "I've been able to adequately treat it."
He said calmly. His voice seldom carried much emotion. But it
was soothing in it's own way. "What i really needed was the time
to rest it and ensure that it won't be injured again.
As he talked, his tail fell out of the spiral patern, and lay
flat on the ground. "It always seemed to me that you found
plenty of time for reading." Probably the closest thing to a
joke the boy had ever told. "May I ask you a question?" He
wasn't used to casual conversation, but he had enough
curiosities about the girl to keep a healthy exchange going.
"You don't seem all that interested in being a warrior. Why did
you choose to attend this Academy?"

Taking a step back, she nodded, accepting his answer. Her blue
blouse matched her icy gaze that watched him attentively. His
jest caused her to smile, but it also made her feel a bit
self-conscious. Not that she was ashamed of the fact rather it
was a tad disarming to know that it was that obvious that a
stranger would notice. Quiet by nature, she remained silent
until he spoke again. Winter hardly ever spoke since she was
more of the type to observe than to act or speak without
purpose. It made it difficult to maintain and make relationships
with people, but she found that the ones who mattered accepted
       her in spite of it.
His question struck a sensitive nerve causing her expression to
eerily grow emotionless. After taking a moment to think up a
       reply, she cleared her throat.
"It is one of the most prestigious schools around," she replied,
giving him to most evasive reply possible. "And, I was hoping to
escape a problem back home and make it better by giving my
father a reason to be proud of his daughter."

Silver eyes noticed the sudden change in the girl's demeanor.
She was well trained, and not by the instructors here. It took
years of training to cut off the emotional response like that,
and the Academy didn't offer that kind of instruction. It seemed
she had done it unintentionally, meaning she was so used to it
that it was second nature. She was definitely not someone he
       would want as an enemy....
The Fox entity's tail straightened she gave him the line. He
wanted to tell her that she would make a good politician, but
during her pause, he could see that she was thinking of how to
continue her statement. The real answer was hidden somewhere in
that second part. But it didn't seem that she wanted to discuss
it, so he didn't press the issue. "I hear your father is
famous." His eyes were now watching the trees, and how they
moved with the wind. "But I'm sure he's always been proud of
you." A loud bang caused both Senrei's ears and head to jump in
it's direction. One of the kids over in the field had just
taken a heavy hit. No concern of his. He turned back to face
Winter once more "I think he would be happier if you did what
       made -you- happy."

Winter could not see his tail since it was behind him, but she
could feel that it had moved. She blamed such traits on her
mother more so than her father even though she had been gifted
with his uncanny ability to observe anything. Thinking of them
now brought a tight smile to her lips. She missed them both at
       times like this.
The bang did not draw her attention away from him, it only
divided it. After the distraction proved to be benign, Winter
gave a subtle shake of her head and wondered how it was possible
that no one had gotten killed thus far.
"I'm sure he would as well. He's an amazing father," she said,
suppressing the pain of missing him. "But, I needed to leave. I
       just... "
Words escaped her momentarily as she fought to describe her own
feelings. Years of being set apart from her family, she never
really felt comfortable there. Constant training and left her
drained and discouraged. No matter how she had tried, she could
not give her father everything that he tried to embed into her.
Hopefully, when she went back he could recognize her as the
daughter that he had raised, but a woman who succeeded in
something worthwhile beside reading books at the same time.
"... I just felt like it was time for me to leave," she finally
concluded. "What do you hope to gain through everything here? "

Winter's hard exterior faded with time. It seemed she was
reminiscing of times past in her mind, which caused a light
smile to air on her face. As a result, his tail flipped once,
before he caught himself, and straightened it once more.
It seemed she had a very loving, yet rigid relationship with her
father. Her facial expression confirmed that she cared for him
greatly, and yet she chose -this- place over remaining with him.
Once again, Senrei couldn't relate. He had no parents to speak
of, good or bad. So he had no knowledge of such internal
conflicts. When she returned his question, he extended his arm
toward the tree behind her, and the branch extended to meet his
hand, extending a flower, which he touched gently, before it
detached from the tree and landed in Winter's lap.
"My home has no great warriors. No one to defend it from the
outside world. When I was young it was ravaged by men who hoped
to rob it of all it had to offer, and nearly destroyed it
completely. I came here to learn to be a defender. Honestly, I
believe I've learned enough to do the job adequately. I'm not
sure I'll be returning next year..."
