The Koehn Legacy
By: Koehn Date: October 13, 2014, 9:38 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Sirens sang out quietly into the night, bringing a small frown
to his lips as he held two small bags out toward a scrawny blond
man. "That's my cue to go. Enjoy your goods, my friend." Koehn
palmed the two fifty dollar bills and pulled his hand away from
the other man, back into his pants pocket. "What are you talking
about?" Koehn chuckled and turned away from the buyer and took a
step down the long, empty ally. "Wait, man. How do I get hold-"
The buyer turned to the lights and sirens that were coming
around the corner, cursing as he turned back to find that the
dealer had disappeared into the night, leaving nothing but a
heavy trench coat on the ground in his wake. "What the fuck?"
Koehn moved from shadow to shadow and reappeared in a cluster of
trees at the edge of a large park. He rearranged his jeans
around his waist and flattened his shirt over his chest. He
imagined that the night was getting chilly this time of year,
but with his body temperature always sitting as high as it did,
he likely wouldn't break out his jacket until nearly Christmas.
Running a hand through his already shaggy hair, he took a look
around the park. Two girls on a bench with lattes in their
hands. A couple of teens trying to hide their PDA behind the
tall bushes. A few other people passing through, likely on their
way home from work or school or whatever it was that kept your
average human occupied on a Thursday evening. Taking his phone
out of his pocket, he opened up one of his favorite games as he
settled himself onto a wooden park bench.

What a jerk! How did Calia always manage to meet these guys!
Hustlers, con men, and just all around assholes! Was it
something she was doing wrong? It had to be. There was no other
reason she would be walking home through a park at nearly ten at
night! Even for her, that was unsafe, but better than than
getting back in a car with that guy!
Honey brown eyes scanned her surroundings as she followed the
paved path through the park and toward her home. Mostly kids out
after curfew and a few creepy looking guys...She knew she should
have driven herself... Though she was clearly fuming, she still
carried herself with elegance and pride. Her hair bounced with
every step just as surely as her hips swayed. Her eyes cut to
her left as she passed a guy, probably around her age, playing
games on a phone on one of the benches. Normally she probably
wouldn't have judged him, but at that moment, all men were the
enemy.
Didn't he have anything more productive to do in the middle of
the night? If he could afford a phone to play games on, surely
he didn't need to be sitting on a park bench... She caught
herself before she took it too far, continuing to walk with an
unnaturally quick pace. It was still a few more blocks before
she could walk into her apartment, take off her clothes, and
drop into a nice hot bubble bath...

He thought to himself that if games were realistic, the little
green creature in Cut The Rope would have one hell of a stomach
ache by this level in the game. With another quick series of
taps, another candy fell into the creatures open mouth; level
up. With the moon shining bright tonight, Koehn was thankful for
the surrounding shadows even when he wasn't utilizing them. He
took pause from his game to scan his surroundings once again.
For what, he didn't know. He was no hero, no
knight-in-shining-armor. He wasn't looking to make trouble, or
stop it. It was none of his business, what happened in this
park. Truth be told, he sat in the park because he enjoyed the
calm bustle of night time, and because it was always an easy
place to come after making one of his deals.
Something was off, he thought to himself, as he watched a man in
a dark sweatshirt move from his spot up against a tree. He
followed the man's gaze to a perky looking, but obviously
unhappy, woman as she walked toward the park bench. The man in
the sweatshirt had his hood up as he got a few paces closer to
the woman, but Koehn's acute senses allowed him to make out the
twitchy nature of the man's face. He was looking... making sure
no one else was watching as he came up quietly behind her. He
took another quick glance at the woman. Her face radiated
frustration, but her hips swayed and her hair bounced
none-the-less. She had beautiful eyes, he realized, even in
their pain.
Koehn jumped into action; uncharacteristically so. He moved
swiftly, getting off the bench just as she passed it. He figured
she wouldn't cooperate if he tried the ran-into-an-old-friend
routine, so he went with his next best option and slammed his
body awkwardly into hers. Both of them stumbled, but he put his
arms out to catch her or her belongings or whatever else would
fall if need be. Hurting her was not the point of his
orchestrated clumsiness.

One of Calia's biggest struggles was maintaining a normal life.
In order to do that, she had to be perceived as normal, when
in reality, she was far from it! Calia wasn't a person who was
easy to take by surprise. In fact, it was damn near impossible!
She sighed to herself as she realized she was being tailed. Was
she going to have to reveal herself? After the night she had
already had? That wasn't going to do anything for her mood...
After thinking on her options, she decided the best course of
action would be to stick to well lit, and populated areas, not
giving her pursuer the opportunity to engage. That would
require her to take a longer path home, but it would also
protect her secret. She couldn't help but shake her head at the
thought. She was more concerned with protecting her secrets
than her own wellbeing. But that was when she noticed the
second man approaching her. He was walking a collision course.
An accomplice? Could they really be bold enough to assault her
in the middle of the populated Park? She prepared herself for
battle, prepared to take out the approaching man first, when
she noticed. He wasn't approaching her to attack her! His
intention was... To protect her? He had noticed the man
following her! Saving grace!
Calia didn't make any attempt to avoid the man's contact, or to
stop herself from falling in to his protective embrace. "Oh!
I'm so sorry! " she exclaimed, in a quite convincing tone of
apology. "I should really watch where I'm going!" She looked
over her shoulder as she recovered to her feet. The man had
stopped moving. It seemed he was waiting for the two to split
ways. Ugh! She pushed a bundle of hair out of her face and
smiled at her would be saver, recognizing him as the man from
the bench. "Are you alright?" She asked, naturally slanted eyes
looking up at the taller man, in hopes that he would realize
what she had, without realizing that she too, had noticed.

The girl stumbled softly into his arms. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" She
was soft against his chest, but he sensed power in the movements
underneath her jacket. Curls bounced everywhere, brushing
against his neck and chest and falling ultimately in front of
her eyes. They were lovely curls, he thought to himself as one
skimmed just above the collar of his t-shirt, soft and supple
and long. Some were the color of her eyes, some a few shades
darker.
A thought occurred to him in that moment. His sisters all had
been born with hair like the girl; soft curls that fell
everywhere around them. As they should have been... it was
custom for his kind, as was slightly darker skin and bright,
caramel and gray colored eyes. He, on the other hand, had been
born with the same softly tanned skin, but with thick straight
hair and cool, steel colored eyes. Funny, how he never seemed to
fit quite as perfectly with his family as they would have liked.
He moved to pull her to her feet, but found that she was already
stabling herself. He was surprised, by her quick work to right
herself; she was strong and quick to recover. His surprise grew
as he caught the slight shift of her gaze and tilt of her head,
and the heavy sigh she let out as she noticed the man still
waiting behind her, running his hands along another park bench
as he watched the pair. Clearly, he was not yet thrown off her
scent. She looked back to him, eyes narrow and sparkling in the
moon. "Are you alright?" Was he alright? He'd knocked her over.
"Of course... it was my fault. I should have seen you coming..."
His eyes darted once more to the man, still hovering, trying to
look discrete in his stalking. "I think you might have twisted
your ankle," he said slowly, resting one hand gently on her hip
and the other clasping her opposite arm, "Maybe we should have a
seat and I can look at it for you? I'm a... nurse." He smiled
ever so slightly at his obvious lie. But utter believability was
not the point, now was it.

Because all of Calia's movements were calculated, she wasn't
subject to the oversights of a person who had really fallen. She
noticed the man's slowed motions, and the way he examined her.
If not for her current situation, she would probably have called
him out on it but for now, she owed him at least that much
gratitude.
There were a few things that made Calia different from other
people, and the first was her hyper-sensitized empathy. She
couldn't read minds or anything, mind you. It was more like she
could read intentions, or auras. She could tell what someone
wanted, as long as they were close enough. That's how she knew
that her date that evening, who knew all the right things to
say, was really only after one thing. And that's how she knew
that this man was genuinely attempting to help her...
The second difference was her superior processing speed. Calia
was able to analyze, and respond to stimuli in nanoseconds,
making her reflexes, as well as her judgement lightning fast.
When the nameless man suggested that she may have twisted her
ankle, she quickly fell into character, limping alongside the
man toward the bench. Having gained his company would surely
send her stalker off her tail. But there was another issue. His
suggestion guaranteed that he realized that she was aware of her
pursuer. Hopefully he would just think her a perceptive woman,
and not that there was anything particularly unique about her.
Surely enough, the creep in the hoodie gave up on his target and
continued along his way as the man "examined" her ankle. "So...
A nurse, you say?" she couldn't help but laugh, now that the
immediate danger had passed. "And here I thought you might be a
professional Racecar driver!" Her facetious tone was clear, but
hopefully he would pick up on her playful nature. With a heavy
sigh of relief, she threw her head back, eyes pointing toward
the sky as she breathed in the fresh air, enjoying it for the
first time since she left the house...

Settling onto the bench, he pulled the woman's ankle gently up
into his lap. Careful not to move his hands too high as he
pushed her pant leg up or hover over her exposed sin too long,
he looked carefully at the ankle, feigning interest in her
imaginary injury until he saw the tattered sneakers of her
pursuer walk past. He lifted his head and rolled her pant leg
back down, chucking in response to her gentle laughter. "I
prefer other means of transportation, actually." He flashed her
a straight smile, and watched her for a moment as she looked up
at the sky. Suddenly, the exhaustion and anger that he'd seen in
her features leaked away. In a moment's time, she looked
peaceful, as she took in the night air.
That was his best guess, at least. Having been raised and
trained as he had, Koehn was no good at reading emotion. Rather,
he read movements and noticed facts and deduced from there.
Feelings weren't anything that he had a lot of experience
with... but he found himself smiling at the new-found relief
that she seemed to be feeling. "I'm not really a nurse," he
admitted, looking down at the delicate ankle in his lap, "But
thank you for playing along... that could have gotten awkward."
He smiled again, extending his hand to her, across their laps.
"My name is Koehn."

Calia winced as she underwent her false examination, feigning
the pain of her ankle coming into contact with the man's hands.
She had really taken to her role moreso than she expected. She
was having fun! "Oh, a motorcycle man?" She asked, when he
suggested that he preferred other methods of transportation. She
could see him riding a motorcycle. He had that "Leather Jacket"
look. Or maybe it was just his hair that made her think that...
She gave an exasperated fake gasp when he confessed to not being
a nurse. "Really?! No!!" She fell into a fit of laughter, and
shook her head, her hair bouncing back and forward as she did
so. "No. Seriously. Thank you for helping me! I don't know how i
would have lost that guy!" She decided to play the helpless
role. It was best to keep unwanted information from getting out.
"Nice to meet you Koehn. My name is Calia" She extended her
hand to the man in gratitude and thanks, He had been a true help
to her.

He shook her hand gently, holding it for a moment while she gave
him her name, and then let it fall back into her lap. "I suspect
you would have found a way out of it yourself." He studied her
for a moment, watching the way her eyes instinctively flitted
around her, and remembered the way she'd glanced over her
shoulder earlier. It had hardly been noticeable; in fact, he
probably would never have caught it if detail watching hadn't
been so ingrained in him. The more he thought about it, he
figured she must have known about the man before he'd walked
into her, probably even let the collision happen. The woman was
definitely different, he decided. The revelation sparked his
interest, but he chose to let it go for now. Should fate allow
him to know her better, he would not object. "I am glad, though,
for the opportunity to have helped you."
Koehn took a moment to look around. The park had nearly cleared,
save for the couple of teens still breaking public decency laws
in the bushes. He shifted his eyes again, evaluating the shadows
out of habit and then settling his gaze on the stars above them.
The air was cool on his bare arms and in his lungs as he took a
deep breath. It was a beautiful night. A person could
practically smell the leaves changing colors, the air was so
fresh and light. "Maybe I could walk you closer to your home?"

It was true... Calia probably would have been able to get home
without ever giving her filter the opportunity he was waiting
for. And in a worst case scenario, she was certain she could
have taken him. But that wad something she wanted to avoid at
all costs. Either way, she didn't have to worry about it now.
"Guess we'll never know now, huh? " That seemed to be the best
response. It effectively skipped around everything she didn't
want to say.
Calia had to say, she was legitimately surprised when Koehn
offeree to walk her closer to home. It seemed he wanted to keep
an eye on her, without coming off as too forward. He was
sweet! "I'd like that. " she said, nodding her head slightly
as she stood to her feet. "Besides, I may not make it all the
way there alone on this twisted ankle!" She pretended to limp a
few steps before straightening her stride. Though she was now
laughing and joking, there was something Regal about the way
she walked. She held her head up high, and stepped with
confidence. It was a part of her natural charm, but also
something that put people off. She was never truly vulnerable,
and it showed in her demeanor. She turned back and gestured for
Koehn to follow. "What's wrong? Scared someone will steal that
motorcycle?" Of course, by this point, she had discerned that
he didn't actually have a vehicle. This brought many questions
to her mind, but she decided not to press them. Not fir the
time being, at least...
