One Word Challenge
By: Raijuta Date: June 19, 2014, 4:55 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Ok this one is completely stolen, but I like the exercise, and
I'm going to use it!
This will be an ongoing challenge. It'll start with a single
word. For example the word may be "Darkness" You are then to
expand on that word, and turn it into a story. You can expand it
however you like. For example it may be a story about darkness
itself, or maybe a person who is lost, and surrounded in
darkness. The purpose of this exercise is to work on our ability
to create vivid imagery from a simple thought or idea. After
your story, post a new word, that the next challenger can use.
You can also choose to use a word that's already been posted.
Alright let's get started!
The first word is....
Green
Quest Value: 1-3 Gold.
(Players may recieve rewards from this challenge more than once,
however the reward is only available once a week)

Why does she get to have everything? The hot boyfriend, the nice
car... Even such close friends? Envy is an ugly drug...To covet
the belongings, or accomplishments of another will slowly eat
away at you from the inside out. But Brenda was unable to
comprehend that. She was driven by her desire to have what Maria
had. Her every thought was dictated by her "rival's" things,
which prevented her from gaining her own.
No friends... A dead end job... A tiny one bedroom apartment
with a beautiful view of the unusually active train tracks...
This was Brenda's reality. Watching Maria's life from the
outside, visualizing it from the inside, and dying a little more
each day.
They were once friends, but now they didn't so much as speak to
each other. Brenda would call Maria's job, to complain about
her, hoping that, if Maria lost her job, she could take her
place. Meanwhile, she missed all of the opportunities that came
her way. Angels in disguise that came to guide her, she shunned
and pushed away. Doors that opened she turned her nose up at.
Before she knew it, she was old and grey. She never embraced her
life, because she was too busy being Green with Envy...
The next word is "Heavy"

"Dad, it's heavy!" the boy exclaimed, dropping the sword again
for the upteenth time.
"Of course it is, boy. A sword is as much a burden as it a gift.
One day you will realize that."
"Of course I realize it! You've drilled into my head a thousand
times!"
"Yet you fail to understand."
The boy tilted his head curiously at his father, who look so
poised and relaxed; elegant, and at peace though there was a
catlike grace to his stance or when he walked. Head high and
shoulders back, proud and confident of himself and his
abilities. The boy thought his father a hero. With a sword like
this? He'd have to be. And the way he talked and how he
walked... It was so unreal. Sometimes the boy wondered if his
father was even real.
The older man chuckled faintly, amused at the questions firing
in the boy's mind; the boy had little tact in hiding the
emotions he felt, though he'd learn. For now, though, the father
thought it prudent that the boy understand why the sword was so
heavy.
"Any weapon is heavy, you'll understand. Some are easier to
carry, yes, but when you are able to hold that sword with one
hand, with ease and grace; to be able to make it sing the blood
and flesh of your foes, then perhaps you'll truly understand
what I mean by heavy."
The boy, again, wrinkled his face up in a form of contempt at
the philosophical lesson, glared at his father for making him
feel stupid for not understanding and picked up the sword with
two hands; determination glittering brightly in his eyes.
He wouldn't let his father down. Never him.

*Clang* *Clang* *Clang*
The voice of the machine called, it's roar echoing through
buildings who where strutting up through the air in their
attempt to capture the sky and hold it still. The call also
awoken the masses and called the followers, the young and old,
to awaken and pilgrimage to the sacred temple of industrialism.
*Clang* *Clang* *Clang*
Gears whirled as giant metal cauldrons shifted through the air
and swung back and forth over the heads of the newly arrived
disciples, who punched in their visit to the new Lord and
exchanged hours of their lives for the future of the giants just
streets away. Their growing gods of Iron and Steel.
Poured from their cauldrons came the lifeblood of the God
Industrialization, molded into the veins of behemoths. Only the
purest ores where allowed to be sacrificed to the savior. And
only the best would be allowed to ascend into the sky and
continue the work others died to continue. Iron Giants now ruled
this land, and those who used to worship the trees, now
worshiped iron coins and paper.

'Ugh! I can't believe that after all of this we're still going
to do this..' The young girl thought to herself as she slowly
made haste toward the cabin. 'Act naturally, she said. It'll be
almost totally alright, she said. HA!' The long dirty trek
through the woods kicked up dust that had been undisturbed for
what seemed like years. Needless to say, the woman was nervous
about this night's events. It was a party; hosted by the upper
class-men of their collage. Surely, Athena was cautious about
crashing the older kid's party, but her friend, who was sure
that if they wore these clothes and acted the part, they would
be a sure fit it. Of course, Athena was absolutely unsure that
this scheme would work. It was an authentic replica of the older
student's attire, but she knew that sooner or later, the perfect
mess would come from this. "Are you sure this will work?" Athena
asked her friend. "Of course! Trust me." Athena's face twisted
in doubt; even time her friend would say those two words, she
knew they were bound for trouble. Well, at the front door of the
cabin; the lights, music, and sounds of the crowd was deafening
even far back along the trail. But now, Athena couldn't even
hear herself think. 'Oh shit...' She thought to herself as the
door slowly opened. She had hoped her friend's bid to do all of
the talking works out, otherwise, this would be completely
fucked up... Why does she always let her friend get her into
these situations?!

Alex smiled as she sat down and opened her old journal. not much
had been written in it. In fact, there was only one entry. But
that wasn't the page that she turned to. Somewhere, nearly
halfway into the book, was a placeholder. She could always turn
straight to it without searching, and this day was no different.
On the page was a flower; Dried and wilted, and yet, it still
maintained it's color; A beautiful lavender...
She could remember the day that she recieved the flower... It
was a gift from David. He had given it to her on their
anniversary, the day after she had started writing the journal.
Not a dozen flowers, not a bouquet. But that single, lone
flower. It was the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for her!
Not that the picnic, and the Promise ring that he gave to her
weren't just as special, but there was something about the
Orchid that spoke to her... It was a token of his particular
feelings for her, and she knew the time and consideration he had
put into deciding just which one to pick for her...
David died in a car crash the next day... It was the last thing
anyone expected from the healthy, vibrant young man! Great
things were expected of him! And he had just promised his life
to the woman of his dreams, only to have it all come crashing
down so suddenly... Alex put the ring into David's casket, to be
buried with him, a sign of their love truly lasting beyond their
lifetime. She couldn't rid herself of the flower, however. Nor
could she continue to write. So she decided to place the purple
orchid in her journal; A requiem for the man that she loved...

Loud muffed screams echoed through the dark hallways as the
sound of scratching and tearing was heard. The thick darkness
slowly parting to show the lone creature in the center of the
madness; screaming. His lips were sewn completely shut as he
scratched and pulled at the remnants of what little of his
clothes he had left. His screams never stopping. With each
scream growing more and more desperarate to break through the
silence.
This creature spiralled in this madness as his eyes slowly began
to drip desperate tears; feeling his body eating himself from
the inside out. A bomb of thoughts and emotions pushing the cage
of his body and trying to find the weakest escape. Trying to
break free from the sheer isolation. His tears slowly deepening
into a deep crimson as they fell to his wounded, clawed, chest.
The creature dropped to his knees as he could no longer take the
darkness. The silence. His body could not bare it, already
having taken the toll of his mind. His nails, sharpened from
scratching again and again, ripping away the stitches that held
his lips together. Attempting to let out a horrid cry for help,
but, nothing came out but pools of blood.. Having no tongue. In
one swift motion his body giving in. Collapsing onto the ground
as he simply started into the silence and isolation. Embracing
it.

She strolled in with the air of authority instantly filling the
room. Those who heard the door open instantly turned their heads
to meet the aura of perfection that had just graced them with
her presence. Women envied her, while the males covenanted every
eyeful she allowed them to ascertain. Her footsteps made nary a
sound as six inch heels carried her to the center stage of the
lunchroom and allowed her to sit. Waves of long brown hair
flowed down her back, tickling just above the small of her back.
Hazel eyes gazed out behind lengthy bangs as she shook her head
and sent a flow through her locks that remained for just enough
time to sensually stroke her back.

"Its stunning how much they contrast each other."
"So different, yet so beautiful."
"The subtle change in exposure is most aesthetically pleasing."
They kept staring, kept looking at one then the next, one with
blond hair, one with black. Both with the most unsettling ice
blue eyes. She had porcelain skin almost milky beneath a curtain
of black while he had a copper tan that contrasted so well with
his platinum fringe. She dressed dark, and he light, clothing
matching a beige and white theme, or that of grey and black.
They were the most unsettling twins, but they were beautiful at
that. She stood before a white background, he stood before a
black one, and they stood out like sore thumbs to the
communities eyes. Their eyes gazed out from behind thick glass,
dressed Victorian in fashion while their audience wore tennis
shoes, and baseball caps. It was a most vintage display in a
modern new world. Aesthetically pleasing in the most unsettling
ways.

The temple is dark. The only light comes from large wax candles
atop wrought iron stands, the soft glow casting long shadows
which shroud every corner and crevice of the room. The woman
walks to the front of the open room, passed the velvet covered
pews all bare but for a few lonely souls. The only sounds to be
heard were the near silent whispers of fervent prayers and the
crackle of flame consuming wick. Upon reaching the front of the
large room, the woman falls to her knees before the immaculate
statue representing her god. She whispers a prayer of her own
into clasped hands, and then drops three gold coins into a dish
at her deity's feet. A moment later she pulls her weary bones to
standing and returns to the ornate wooden doors. Her heart is
once again filled with hope that he will help his worn and
broken follower, that giving everything she had would bring her
a miracle.
The next word is.... Extrapolate.
