       Colorado Springs
By: Berith Date: December 24, 2013, 9:22 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Winter. The cold and the snow, fires and hot chocolate. A time
that brought couples closer and helped spread kindness. Lovers
held each other tight at night and in the streets to savor the
warmth. It was lovely for most, and depressing for others.
Georgia was one of those others. Native to the warm climates of
southern Florida, she could not stand the cold. The only reason
behind her trip to the Rockies was college. A full-ride
scholarship for softball had landed her here, because all of the
schools down south had denied her entry. That would happen when
her parents lacked any finds to bribe admissions.
Not that she minded being away from Florida. Life here gave her
a new perspective and an area where she was unknown. A grateful
fact, considering her ex-boyfriend was quite psychotic. He had
threatened to beat her if she didn't go to UCF with him, but
that hadn't been her school of choice. Luckily, he was unaware
of where she had gone, and was clueless to anything other than
       football and sex.
Still, the more she sat alone, watching others from a coffee
shop in town, the more she felt compelled to call him up,
psychotic or not. At least then she would have at least one
person to talk to other than her coffee. Again, winter was
lovely to most and depressing to others.

The chime at the door went unnoticed by Georgia, her mind too
engrossed in the thought of calling him. His number was
highlighted in her phone, ready to call, but she hesitated.
Yelling would certainly be his greeting for her, along with a
string of profanities a mile long. All he had ever done was
belittle her, even though she had been kind and sweet to him.
For all she had done for him, sticking up for him when no one
else would, he refused to pay it in kind. It had been the reason
she accepted the scholarship and fled town. The physical and
emotional abuse had finally pushed her away.
Again, Georgia's eyes drifted outside and towards the numerous
couples walking by. Christmas was a little more than a week
away, and they were all buying gifts for one another. She, on
the other hand, had not bought any gifts, not even for herself.
No, this year she would be spending Christmas in Colorado
Springs, the trip home far too expensive and just as dangerous.
Surely, he would be waiting, hoping to catch her off guard and
do as he promised. "You all have it so easily made," she said to
       no on in particular.

A hand slapped over her lips to stifle a squeal. Georgia had
been in her own little world and had not expected anyone to walk
up to her. Slowly turning, she gazed at the stranger who was
quite beautiful. "I suppose that you can, I'm not saving that
seat for anyone." She forced a smile and glanced down at her
drink, which was now half-empty. Either she would need a refill
soon or be heading back to her dorm room, alone.
After a moment of thinking, she decided to be a bit social, as
she once was. "Do you go to school here? I'm a freshman, on the
softball team. Oh, and my name is Georgia." A nervous giggle
bubbled in her throat, her eyes falling back to her coffee. It
had been a year, or more, since she had been allowed friends.
The ex-boyfriend didn't allow any, unless he approved, which
usually consisted of egotistical football players and doped up
jerks. Georgia had been the only clean in sober one of the
       bunch.

"It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Kayden," she replied with
a smile. For a moment, a silence grew between them, too loud for
Georgia to bare any longer. "It's starting to snow again,
perhaps we should head back to the dorms before it gets too
bad." At the thought, she began to gather her belongings,
slipping her heavy coat over her long sleeved t-shirt.
The distance wasn't too far, but the snow would make it a more
difficult and treacherous trip. Georgia watched Kayden for a
moment, a smile still planted upon her lips. "I'll walk with
you, if you'd like." To be honest, she was theone who ddidn't
want to walk back alone. She had already left her empty dorm
room and came out by herself, but heading back alone seemed all
the more depressing. "What a lovely holiday season," she offered
       with a bite of sarcasm.

With a smile and a quick nod, Georgia headed for the door and
outside. It was a bit warmer now than it had been, the falling
snow serving to lift the temperature. "God, do I miss the
beach," she said absentmindedly, her mind drifting back to the
long and warm summers. "This is the first place I had ever seen
snow," she added while sneaking a glance at Kayden. A friend was
definitely what she need right now, to keep her mind off of
       unneeded thoughts.
Silence fell over them again while Georgia waited for a
response. Her roommate had gone home for winter break, and she
was tired of staying in her room alone. Perhaps she could
convince Kayden to stay with her, or vice versa; because if
Georgia found herself alone again tonight, otherwise she would
call the one person she didn't need to call. "Hey! I have an
idea!" She beamed and took Kayden by the hand. "Let's have an
       old-fashioned slumber party!"

"As did my roommate, not that I'm upset she is gone. She keeps
stealing my clothes." Well, stealing probably was a harsh word
choice, but her roommate did have a habit of borrowing clothes
without asking. "I don't have a heck of a lot to choose from,
and it really bugs me when she takes them." Georgia was happy
now, however, and she doubted anyone could ruin her mood. To
show her elated mood, she gave Kayden's hand a gentle squeeze.
As if he knew she was finally happy, Georgia's phone started
ringing. Frightened though she was, she answered and braced
herself for the screaming; which he started without hesitation.
He called her every name in the book, using the phrase 'lying
bitch' several times. Yet, she didn't hang up the phone, as much
as she hated him. She missed his voice, which felt wrong but was
very true. "I'm sorry," was all she could fit in every so often,
while casting Kayden a look of fear and heartache.

'My ex-boyfriend in Florida,' Georgia mouthed in reply. The
screaming hadn't yet stopped, which was bringing tears to her
eyes. She knew she could hang up the phone, but couldn't bring
herself to do it. Instead, she waited for him to quiet down to
speak. "I'm sorry, Mark, but I couldn't take you hitting me or
yelling at me anymore. I didn't do anything wrong, and still you
treated me that way. I should have listened to my mom."
When he started yelling again, Georgia threw her phone into the
street. A half-hearted smile pulled at the corner of her lips
when she met Kayden's gaze. "Story of my life. Date an abusive,
steroid enhanced jock, and he still manages to scare me from
thousands of miles away." Squeezing Kayden's hand again, Georgia
continued on towards the dorms. "Let's get out of the cold."

Entering the dorm buildings, Georgia paused to let Kayden take
the lead. "Three years I dealt with that. Three years my parents
told me I should leave him. I wish it had been that simple back
then, but he was everywhere I went. Well, except when I was at
home, and I wasn't about to become a hermit." This girl was
really nice, just like her old best friend had been. To show her
gratitude, Georgia kissed Kayden on the cheek and smiled. "Thank
you for making my day better."

Once inside Kayden's room, Georgia was uncertain of what to do.
Granted the slumber party was her idea, but she hadn't had one
since her freshman year of high school when she still had
friends. Deciding to take a seat, she sat on the edge of a bed
and smiled at Kayden. "I do need a friend. Mark scared all my
friends away in high school, and I haven't exactly been a social
       butterfly since getting here."
As rooms went, this was a standard door room but it looked as
though Kayden and her roommate decorated quite nicely. "I love
your room. Mine is still a little bland. I haven't had the money
to decorate, not with the expenses for classes and stuff."
Feeling a little awkward, Georgia silenced herself and began to
play with strands of her hair. It was a nervous habit she had
never been able to break, but it was better than biting her
       nails.

"A movie and popcorn sounds wonderful. I'll let you pick the
movie, though," she said with a smile. "Oh, but no scary movies
or I will be clinging to you like a scared little puppy all
night long." Not that clinging to Kayden would be a bad
experience, but she didn't want to have nightmares all night
       long.
Tonight was going to be fun, that was certain. What was
uncertain was how the night would play out. Georgia had always
found herself thinking about girls, while simultaneously wanting
a boyfriend as well, but she had never tried anything with
another girl. That, and she was afraid if she tried anything
with Kayden, she'd lose her only friend. "Can I use your
       bathroom for a moment?"
