Savannah, Georgia
By: jellybean081486 Date: September 27, 2013, 9:47 am
---------------------------------------------------------
The south has always been a hot and humid place, towns dotting
areas between dense pine forests and muggy swamps. Yet, despite
the nearly overwhelming temperatures, it held an elegance and
beauty like no other area in the world. Because, interlaced
between the swamps, forests, and gorgeous oak trees were towns
that had their own identities; including the illustrious
Savannah, Georgia.
Here, the modern and antebellum mixed exquisitely, bringing new
life to the past and present. Granted, not all of Savannah
maintained a certain decorum, but most of it brought you back to
the days of beautiful plantation homes and gardens filled with
jasmine, azaleas, and magnolias, to name a few. It was a city of
its own, placed not far from the Atlantic coast.
Do not forget your manners, and remember to be respectful. Those
who live here pride themselves in southern etiquette and
respecting those around them, well except when it comes to dirty
little secrets. Do you have secrets? If you do, can you keep
them hidden?

Georgia was drunk. She and her friends where in an old church.
Partying. Bobby Winthrop was more drunk than any of them and for
some reason that night he picked Georgia. Every time they drank.
Bobby picked a female to have on his arm that night. But when
everybody ran out of beer, they all packed up to go home.
Georgia went to the bathroom, brushed her teeth and fixed her
hair a little. She checked her phone. Four missed calls from her
mother. Great. She started to go outside when Bobby grabbed her
arm and pulled her back into to the church onto a ratty old
couch. "Bobby, I gotta call my mom." She squirmed to get up.
But he held his body against hers forcing her down. His lips
clumsily leaving wet streaks on her face and neck as he
attempted to kiss her. "Come on Babe, you know you wanna." He
started to unzip his pants, she took the opportunity to squirm
away. He stood up and back handed her across the face knocking
her down. "Bitch get your clothes off." Georgia stood up and ran
for the back of the church. Just as she reached the door he
grabbed her hair and covered her mouth. "Now bitch you will give
me what I want." He pushed her pants down from the back and
forced his member inside of her ass. She cried out. Suddenly
there was what sounded like metal ricocheting off something and
he fell. She fell on top of him. She looked up to see Bethany.
One of her best friends. "You okay?" She asked helping her up.
Georgia nodded and pulled her pants up. She looked down at
Bobby, who's head was now in a pool of blood beside a metal
pipe. "I-I panicked." Bethany cried. Georgia leaned down and put
her fingers to his neck. "He's dead Bethany. Come on. We have to
fix this." Georgia grabbed one of the old bottle and some
lighter fluid and a lighter. She ripped off a piece of Bobby's
shirt and soaked it in fluid before lighting the shirt. She
threw the lighter fluid in the corner of the church and threw
the bottle against it. "Come on, lets drag him closer to the
fire. After doing so, they started to exit the church which was
now more engulfed in flames than Georgia expected. She looked at
the door still safe. Covering her mouth with her shirt she
shouted for Bethany to run. Georgia noticed an old propane tank
in the kitchen area of the church. "We have to hurry." She
shouted and dived out the front door, running from the church as
far as she could. Most everyone was gone except a vehicle that
she couldn't quite make out. Then the flames got brighter
suddenly and she realized it was her mom's vehicle. Where was
her mom. She turned around Bethany was no where to be seen. Her
mom wasn't either. The flames at the church were too big to go
back in. But she was going to anyway. But suddenly the church
exploded and Georgia went flying backwards.
A few months later Georgia's wounds had healed. She was on a bus
heading to her grandmothers house in somewhere called Savannah,
Georgia. She leaned her head against the window and remembered
that night. She swallowed as the bus came to a stop at the
station and her grandmother stood out there waiting for her. At
the sight of her, Georgia's grandmother wrinkled her nose. "You
kids have the strangest fashion sense these days. Georgia looked
down at her black banana shirt, little black shorts and ripped
panty hose. Okay so maybe not the outfit to meet her grandmother
in, but she wanted her grandmother to know she had her own style
before she even moved in. "Well let's get you loaded up in the
truck Georgy." Georgia hated her nick name that her grandmother
gave her but she smiled anyway, grabbed her suit case and
started towards her grandmothers truck. "Yes Gramma." Was all
she said and loaded her belongings up.

Savannah. Kendall had always loved living here. It was
idealistic for her, with its rich history and beauty. She didn't
live in the city itself, but on the outskirts on her families
ranch. It had been passed down for several generations, from
father to son. That ended with her dad, though. He and her
mother had not been able to sire a son. No, Kendall was the
first and only born, due to complications at her birth for her
mother. It was tragic, really. Her mother had nearly died giving
birth to her, and she felt her father resented her for that
fact. That, and the family name would end with her,a name that
had been in America since before the Revolutionary war. He
treated her with disrespect and hit her constantly. Well, only
when he was drunk, which was more times than not as of late.
But that didn't matter anymore. With the help of her aunt, from
her father's side (her mother's family lived in Atlanta), she
had gotten accepted to the University of Georgia on a combined
softball and cheerleading scholarship. This would be her last
summer at home for the next four years. She would be leaving her
family, her friends, and her boyfriend Dylan, who was stationed
at nearby Fort Stewart. Life would certainly be interesting once
she left Savannah behind.
These thoughts, and many others, circulated in her mind while
she sat on porch, her eyes staring absentmindedly toward the
gravel road that ran in front of the property. A vehicle, a
truck she knew to belong to the old lady a mile and a hald up
the road, drove by and cut her thoughts off. Kendall smiled and
waved at the woman, and noticed she had a passenger with her. It
was a strange sight to see, considering Kendall had never seen
the lady with anyone; and she went and visited the woman daily,
when her father had began beating her. The old lady had
comforted her when her mother wouldn't, and made her dinner when
she came by. Kendall thought of her as a third grandmother, one
she would miss terribly when she went off to Athens and the
University of Georgia.

Georgia was silent most of the ride. They passed a girl about
her age along side the road. She waved at them. Great. One of
those towns where everybody knows everyone, and they wave at you
all the time, and everyone knows your business. Well she for one
did not intend to spread her business around. She looked
forward. Shifting in her seat to avoid eye contact. Her
grandmother looked at her and simply smiled looking back at the
road. Once they pulled up, Georgia jumped out of the truck and
grabbed her things. "So where's my room Gramma?" She asked
walking for the house. She turned and looked at her Grandma.
Who was still in the truck. "I have some errands to run. Doors
unlocked. Your room is at the top of the stairs. Second door on
the right. With that she put the truck in reverse and pulled out
of the drive way.
Georgia didn't mind being alone. She went in the house and met a
tall dark woman. "Oh! You must be Tilly's grandbaby. I'm Miss
Harriet May Lorane. But you can call me Miss Hattie. Everybody
round here does. You tell Tilly I left the zucchini bread on the
stove and that I'll give her a ring later on tonight. " With
that she headed out the door. Then popped her head back in.
"Welcome to Savanna deary." Then she was gone. Great anymore
unexpected guests going to arrive? She headed up the stairs and
began to unpack. The room looked to be one that belonged to
someone a long time ago. Even the bed spreads looked old.
Luckily she had extra blankets in her suit case. She looked out
the window and her mouth dropped at what she saw. There was a
man, taking care of the yard. Doing landscaping on her
grandmothers property. He looked so good. A smile crossed her
lips as he was digging something up. She didn't know how long
she was staring until he looked up and she stumbled to get away
from the window. Tripping over an old vanity chair.

The yelling voice of her father echoed from within the house,
sending a shiver of fear down Kendall's spine. He was drinking
again, and taking his anger out upon her mother; blaming her for
shortcomings that were not even her own fault. A thud startled
Kendall and forced her into action. She ran into the house, the
screen door slamming closed behind her. Her eyes fell upon her
parent's, her father standing over her mother's prone form. She
didn't move and blood began to pool around her head. Her father
stood there, paralyzed, staring down at her father's bloodied
hand. Kendall screamed and ran to her mother's side, checking
for a pulse. It was faint and growing weaker with each passing
second, as her life blood spilled out of the hole on her
mother's head and onto the floor. "What did you do?" She asked
her father weakly, but that only brought an angered look from
him.
"This is all your fault!" He yelled, "everything is always your
fault. If you hadn't been born, none of this wouldn't have
happened." He raised his fist and struck Kendall in the cheek.
Her head snapped back and her body fell to the floor. If there
hadn't been any blood on her before, there assuredly was now.
Her father raised his hand a second time, but she scrambled
away. He began to chase her, but she was faster than he was; he
had grown out of shape in the years following her birth. Her
feet carried her as fast as they possibly could, pushing her
through the front door and towards the graveled road. She began
to run toward the closest place that she felt safe, the one
place her father never came, the old lady's house down the road.
Tears stung her eyes as she ran, her lungs aching with sorrow;
but she did not stop running, fear that her father would kill
her too pushing her even harder. It did not take Kendall long to
reach the old lady's house, though the lady wasn't home. She had
seen Ms. Hattie leave as she ran down the road and didn't see
Gram's truck, but she assumed that the hired hand had used it to
run into the city for a night of partying. When she reached the
porch, she slammed through the door and began yelling for the
lady. "Grams!" She called out, using her own personal nickname
for the old lady. The woman had never told Kendall her first
name, and Kendall never pried to ask. She did what the woman had
said and called her 'grams'. "Grams please!" She stood in the
foyer, bloodied and crying and needing a comforting hug from the
old woman. "Grams?" She called out one last time, hearing
footsteps upstairs.
(I'm sorry it took so long. I haven't been feeling well, and
didn't feel like writing.)

Georgia sat down on her bed. She sighed and started to fall
asleep. Forgetting about packing. She was almost asleep when her
legs felt really warm. She sat up and looked down. Flames licked
at her legs and was engulfed around her bed. She grabbed her
pillow and began beating at the flames on her. They wouldn't
stop burning, the smell of burnt flesh clogging her nostrils.
She coughed and jumped out of the bed running to the bathroom.
Flames jumping to everything that surrounded her as she ran.
Even water didn't put the flames out as they now had reached her
waist. She sat there and sighed. They had come for her. She had
let her best friend and mother die, and let her friend die.
Three deaths in one night. She deserved this. She felt the
flames tickling her chin when she heard a door slam.
She sat up in bed breathing heavily. She could still smell the
smoke. Or she thought she did. Her grandmother must have
returned. She didn't think she slept that long. Then she heard a
voice downstairs. She jumped out of bed and headed down the
stairs. Whoever it was not her grandmother. She stopped at the
bottom of the stairs finding a disheveled girl with a bruise on
her face and blood all over her. She looked like she had just
been through a fight with a bear given the amount of blood on
her. She had called for her grandmother by 'Grams'. So she must
know her. "Uh, can I help you? Gramma isn't here right now but
she will be shortly." She ran over to the girl trying to see if
there was a large cut or something causing her to bleed so much.
"What the hell happened to you?"

Kendall stared at her hands. Grams wasn't home and she didn't
have anywhere else to go, well not anywhere she wanted to go.
The blood had begun to dry while she ran over here, turning from
a bright red to a rust brown. But, the sight of it pooling
around her mother's head would never leave her mind; neither
would her father standing over the body with his nostrils
flaring as they had. Her life had been changed forever; and for
the first time in her life, she didn't know what she was going
to do.
The sound of a voice pulled her from her reverie and caused
Kendall to scream, nearly jumping out of her skin in the
process. It wasn't Grams though, but the passenger that had been
with her earlier. The girl looked about her age, seventeen or
eighteen, but looked as though she had a different style of
dress. She stared at the girl for several long moments, unable
to find her voice. How would one describe a horrible accident to
a complete stranger? But, if she was at Grams house, she had to
a little trustworthy, right?
"My," Kendall started though she fumbled for the words, "my dad,
he.... He..." She froze, the words caught on her lips. Her
father had killed her mother, and possibly would have killed her
as well. The trauma was far worse than any of the beatings her
father had given her throughout her life. "My dad, he killed....
He killed my mom." She finally said, her voice barely above a
whisper. He body shook with fear, and her legs finally gave out
when the adrenaline wore off. There is no way she would ever be
able to return home now, or even go off to college. She didn't
know what she would do, so she just stared at her bloodied hands
and cried.

When the girl collapsed Georgia's hands darted forward to catch
her. But she sank to the floor before Georgia could catch her.
She looked down at the girl. The look of horror on the girls
face. She knelt beside her as the girl sobbed. "Come on, let's
get you cleaned up. Gramma will be back soon." She said as she
pulled her to her feet. The girl just stared at the blood on her
hands. She led her to the bathroom. Unable to calm her she
stayed silent with the occasional shh. Smoothing her hair down.
"Let's get you undressed and into the tub." She said as she ran
the water into the tub. The girl just stood there. She must have
been in shock. Slowly Georgia walked over and unbuttoned her
shirt, leaving her bra on, and pushed her pants down. She led
her forward to the tub and helped her in. After some coaxing,
the girl was sitting in the tub. She left her underclothes on
for modesty. She took her other clothes and folded them. "Now
you stay there, I'll be back to turn off the tub. If you can
hear me try cleaning off some of the blood. I'm gonna put your
clothes in a bag."
She left the room and wandered around looking for the kitchen.
She saw a phone sitting on a stand. The police. She should call
the police. She sat the clothes on the stand beside the phone
and picked up the receiver. Under the phone was a piece of
paper. It read Miss Hattie with a phone number under it. She
picked it up and dialed that number instead. "Hello?" Came a
voice on the end. "Miss Hattie? It's Georgia." She spoke as
calmly as possible. "Oh, yes dear. How can I help you?" She
asked. "I need you to go find my Grandmother, and ask her to
come home as soon as possible." Just as the words left her mouth
she heard a car park in the drive way. "Never mind, thank you
Miss Hattie." She slammed the phone down and ran out the door.
"Gramma! Come quick!" Her grandmother looked at her puzzled.
"What's wrong dear?" She said as she got out of the truck.
Georgia ran up. "That girl that waved at us. On the way here. Oh
it's bad. She's here safe." Her grandmother's face fell. "Now
slow down. Do you know what happened?" She said hurrying up as
she headed for the house. "Her dad, killed her mom." She said.
Her grandmother dropped what she had and ran in the house.
"Where is she?" She said. "In the bathroom. The tub might still
be running. I went to put her clothes up and then, well-" She
was going to finish but her grandmother was already headed for
the bathroom. "Call the police, tell them to come here, get a
bag and put her clothes in it, the bags are under the sink. Get
her something to put on." And with that she shut the bathroom
door behind her. Georgia did just as she was told.

Kendall allowed herself to be led to the bathroom. She didn't
stop the other girl from removing her clothes, she simply
continued to stare at the blood on her hands. Blood that
belonged to her mother. The thoughts in her mind were jumbled
and incoherent, each one making very little sense. The only
thought that did make sense to her, though, was why did this
have to happen? What had pushed her father over the edge, to the
point of doing this?
The sound of voices nearly pulled Kendall from her state of
shock. Her dead eyes stared at the bathroom door, where Grams
entered and shut the door behind her. She tried to smile, to
show a bit of affection toward the woman who had cared for her
for so long. "Hi, Grams." Her voice was dry and hollow; far from
the soft, sweet voice it was more times than not. "Momma is
dead, Grams. I don't know what to do." Her thoughts began to
spill out, one at a time. As they did, her tears returned as
well.
"I don't know what to do! I can't go off to school! Dylan won't
be able to deal with this sort of karma, not with him going to
Iraq. Momma is dead! Dad killed mom! I am all alone. My family
hates me. I am all alone." She stammered on, each sentence
running into the next. Her gaze returned to her hands, where the
blood had begun to come off. Finally, Kendall did what she had
not been able to do, she let out a long, blood curdling scream
that echoed throughout the bathroom.

Georgia ran to the bathroom when she heard the scream, tying the
bag shut. She opened the door hearing her grandmother yell.
"Kendall!" Her voiced softened as she stepped over to the tub.
"Now hun, you got family right here. I know you haven't been
properly introduced, but you know you have a home here, and once
we get your father put where he belongs and he can get the help
he needs we can get you into school. You know you're safe here.
That man has never looked here for you. Never will." The old
woman leaned over and grabbed the cup off the edge of the tub
and dipped it into the water, and dumped it down the back of
Kendall's hair. Getting it wet. Georgia saw flakes of blood
falling out of her hair into the tub. "Now deary, after we get
things settled we will go get your stuff and move you in here,
you are eighteen you don't have to live at that place. You are
home and safe here. Now, lets get you all cleaned up and you can
call Dylan. Georgia, will you go get Kendall some clothes
please? You look about the same size you can give her a pair of
yours to wear. Something decent please." She said and turned
back to Kendall.
Georgia went to leave the bathroom when she heard sirens. She
was sure that Kendall would start freaking out again. She
remembered when she heard the sirens first. She was already in
the ambulance though on the way to the hospital. She had missed
all that happened before that. The blast knocking her out cold.
She pushed those thoughts away as she ran to her room and pulled
out a pair of blue jeans and a black tank top. This would have
to do for decent. She turned and headed to the bathroom. She
heard the sirens get closer until they came to a stop. Shortly
after a knock on the door. Her grandmother came out of the
bathroom. "Help her get dressed." Then she headed down and
opened the door.
