His hand held tightly around hers and he nodded to her politely
pulling her further up the stairs with a light chuckle as he
looked at the stairs in front of them. His eyes soon looking
upon her and he smiled with a faint sigh he let out a breath and
his chest fell again. "Well that's quite a lovely
coincidence..." He slowly slid his fingers along side hers and
held her hand lightly but squeezing slightly as he kept up the
stairs with a slow but nice pace. "I just so happen to have C-6
all booked out and even paid for in advance for the next few
days..." He chuckled and slowly looked at her again before
staring up the stairwell in front of them with a slight nod as
he continued his pace and holding her beside him as they made
their way up. "The streets are never really safe at all times,
sometimes things happen like that, and others don't have the
good fortune of having someone around to help." His eyes slowly
traveling to her and he smiled. "Then again, even if we hadn't
met each other they would have came after me first, I was just
leaving for home and you were heading the opposite way. You
would have been safe from them." He laughed lightly and slowly
tilted his head down to look at her again as he stopped at the
top of the stairwell. "Though, I don't regret having the
pleasure of meeting you, even if it was a little hectic and
kinda scary." He chuckled to himself before scratching the back
of his head and sighing. His free hand dropping to his side as
he looked down the hall and walked straight to the back of the
complex and then stood outside of both their doors, one right
across from the other. He smiled lightly and held her hand still
his other hand scratching his head lightly. "Umm, go ahead and
keep the sweater for now, I have uh plenty of them and it does
look a lot better on you anyway." He laughed slightly and
scratched the back of his head again before falling to his side
again and he looked at her slightly, his eyes catching hers
easily. "I don't know what to say besides, see you in a bit and
it was my pleasure kicking those guys asses for ya. Though I do
have another quick question..." He cleared his throat and smiled
with a laugh. "What do you want for dinner? Whatever it is I'll
make sure to make it perfect for you."

Berlin’s face lit up when he told her he lived in the apartment
just across the hall. “That’s great!” She said, her hand giving
his a squeeze of excitement. Now that she knew he lived right
next to her, she would definitely be seeing a lot more of him,
which only added on to her excitement. And even if they hadn’t
met this particular night, they would have to have run into each
other at a later date, seeing as how they were neighbors.
Speaking of neighbors, Mrs. Callahan in the room left of
Berlin’s mentioned a new mate on their floor as well. Berlin had
been meaning to introduce herself properly and probably give
them homemade cookies. Knowing that the new neighbor was Derek
made it all better, but she would definitely bake him cookies or
something later. Her long legs carried her up the stairwell
alongside Derek, hand still holding onto his rather tightly. It
was easy to see that she didn’t want to let go. He protected her
before, and now it was as if she would only be able to feel safe
when she was with him. Half way up to the top floor she stopped,
squeezing his hand so he would stop as well. “Derek.. should we
call the police or something? You know.. on those guys in the
alley?” It felt so awkward to talk about stuff like that. Berlin
had never personally witnessed such crime before, but now she
felt like she had to do something. Those men wouldn’t stop until
they got what they wanted. Even if Derek scared them to bits
they all knew that Derek wouldn’t be there every time they tried
to pull something like that. It would be best for Oakridge, and
Berlin’s sanity, if they were at least known about to the
       authorities.
They both continued up the stairs until they stopped in front of
their doors. She couldn’t bring herself to look him in the eyes
so she nodded her head to everything he said, even giving him a
faint giggle when he mentioned kicking their asses. Legs turned
her and brought her to her door, a hand slipping into her pocket
to fish out her keys. Just as she had the door open and was
halfway in it Derek asked her what she would like for dinner.
She looked over her shoulder, this time eyes catching his in a
long glance. “Spaghetti. That sounds good.” Her voice offered
before she fully vanished into her apartment, closing the door
       softly behind her.
She didn’t want to waste any time so she immediately kicked off
her shoes and stripped the clothes from her body, tossing
Derek’s jacket into the drier to freshen it up a bit as she
hopped into the shower. Warm water cascading down her body for
half an hour, her mind making up horrid images of what
previously happened, imagining Derek being killed and a gun
being pointed at her next. Halfway through her thirty minute
shower she felt like she was being watched, which only hurried
her along so she could get to Derek’s place quicker, feeling
safer in his presence. After her shower she dried her body off,
looking through her closet for something to wear. What should
she wear? It was dinner, but not a night out. Her mind was
caught between something dressy and something casual. So, being
the person she was, she settled on something extremely casual.
Pajamas. Berlin slipped on a pair of pajama shorts over her
panties, pulling the now amazing smelling jacket out of her
drier and putting that on as well. She didn’t bother with shoes,
or even doing her hair. So she walked barefooted and wet-haired
over to Derek’s door, knocking softly on the wood.

He had shrugged lightly at her answer before he laughed and
nodded. "Spaghetti it is." His smile was slight as he chuckled
to himself and twisted the knob to his apartment before entering
and shutting the door behind him with a sigh. He looked around
his apartment and shook his head. The cluttered mess, the
constant smell of old building and lots of old garbage. He
sighed and put a hand through his hair before lightly stepping
through and snapping his fingers. Every small bit of garbage
disappearing into nothing and all the clutter instantly being
picked up and set in order. His eyes continuing to scan his
place as he sighed. Everything was as ugly as it seemed. He had
about thirty minutes to an hour at max before things got hectic
and he sighed. Rolling his shoulders and scratching his face.
His eyes gleaming a bright white as he settled onto the couch.
It now disappearing and reappearing as a full black leather
couch and the t.v similarly stretching and pushing at a flat
screen. More homely as the room behind him shifted from carpet
to straight hardwood floors, both the kitchen area and dining
room. The walls shrinking and disappearing in places being
replaced by small open windows here and there. He shook his head
and took his hands through it before standing up and brushing
his hands on his shirt. It slowly pulling down to form a plain
black t-shirt as his jeans faded to a lighter color and his
shoes were kicked off under the table. He stretched still and
his back popped every time. His sigh coming out in a wisp-like
breath before he walked into the kitchen and washed his hands
quickly. The noodles already boiling as he stirred them and set
the strainer into the sink and dumped the water and noodles in,
the water leaving and noodles softly landing in the bowl. His
hands moved quickly to set the pot down on the back burner and
turn the front one off. Soon one hand gripping the strainer and
the other stirring the sauce that was heating up slowly.
His grip soon shifting as he pulled over two plates and let the
sauce sit. Grabbing two forks and setting them on the plates
before scooping down the noodles evenly as he set the strainer
back into the sink he chuckled. "It's been quite some time since
I actually cooked, I'm surprised I still know how." He laughed
to himself before sighing and testing the sauce with a
toothpick. His smile appearing as he graciously lifted a spoon
out and set atop the noodles a good amount of sauce and he
slipped out to the living room before flicking on the television
and shrugging, whatever was good he guessed. His fingers gliding
over a few candles on the table as they flickered to life under
his fingers. He quickly moved to the kitchen again and reached
into the fridge, pulling out a bottle of parmesan cheese and
taking both plates on one arm, spinning around the wall and
setting the plates down, the cheese in between as he made
another trip into the kitchen pulling out of the freezer a small
bucket and a bottle of champagne. His hands setting the bottle
gently into the bucket of ice and he walked over to the oven, as
he leaned over and pulled it open, grabbing the tray as his skin
singed lightly but he shrugged it off, pulling it out and
setting it on top of the burners. His apartment soon smelling of
garlic and toast as he smiled. Sliding it all onto a plate as he
grabbed the tray and slid it back into the oven. Now that it was
closed he made his way into the living room again where he set
the toast in front of the cheese and the bottle in front of the
table next to the couch. He walked out to the kitchen yet again
as he grabbed two glasses and walked back into the living room,
this time he smiled and chuckled, hearing the light knock of his
door. His apartment low light still looked well with the candle
light at least, and he set the glasses down before walking to
the door and flicking the locks, opening it to welcome his guest
in with a smile. "Welcome, c'mon in Berlin, dinner is just ready
       for us."

Berlin’s face immediately brightened up when the door opened to
reveal Derek’s chiseled-to-perfection face. A small smile was
immediately on her face, but her nerves from what happened
previously prevented her from feeling fully comfortable. You
couldn’t just get over something like that, it took time to
heal. Stepping into his apartment, Berlin didn’t know exactly
what to expect, but she was pleasantly surprised to see how nice
it was. And as soon as she spotted the table for two set up in
the living room her heart melted and her knees grew weak. It was
perfect. Everything was perfect. Including the smell of the
garlic toast, it brought back memories of the many homemade
meals she shared with her family, and reminded her of home. She
turned to find Derek, and once her eyes caught his she smiled a
genuine smile that made her eyes sparkle. “This is beautiful,
Derek. Thank you so much.” She then would mosey her way over to
him, steps quiet and feather-light on the hardwood floors. Once
close enough to him she placed her hands on either side of his
face and brought it down to hers, but because of his height she
still had to stretch up on her tiptoes just to kiss his forehead
in thanks. “I really appreciate. Thank you.” Again with the
thankyous! She felt that it couldn’t be said enough, especially
since Derek had saved her from those people. She honestly owed
       him her life.
After the kiss she lowered herself down slowly, eyes staying
connected with Derek's as long as possible until she looked
away, blush growing an even darker shade. After that she made
her way over to the table, but not without grabbing Derek’s hand
first, tugging him along behind her. She gave his hand a
comforting squeeze that told him she was grateful for what he
was doing for her before letting his hand go, taking a seat in
front of one of the plates. She would wait for him to sit down
before digging into the meal. “It smells so good! I’m so
hungry.” As if on cue her stomach growled, rousing a squeak out
of Berlin. “See? I’m starving. I’m going to wither away to
nothing.” As she said that her face was completely serious, yet
her eyes held a playful glint in them. Eventually her face
cracked a smile and she began to quietly giggle.

He would lean down as far he could before standing up straight
again and smiling, scratching behind his head and nodding
slightly. "I swear its no trouble at all." His gaze was caught
in hers as their eyes were connected then he smiled lightly,
holding her hand as he saw and awed at her blushing. He chuckled
lightly. It was very cute, quite charming and overall just
seemed natural that her cheeks would become like that and he
nodded slightly. He noticed her hand was still in his as they
took their seats, and he blinked slightly before slowly letting
go of her hand and laughing with her. Hearing her speak and her
stomach growl he couldn't help but play on with her joke, his
eyes attentive to hers but his hands reaching out, one grabbing
the bottle of champagne at their feet, the his thumb under the
cork as he flicked the cork out and onto the table perfectly, no
foam seeping out whatsoever as he smiled and took up the two
glasses, filling both graciously and handing one to her before
he smiled again. "To new neighbors, and a wonderful love life."
His eyes seemed to sparkle in the candle light as he looked from
the edge of his glass to her eyes. Before tilting the top
against hers in cheers. He was still smiling as he took a sip
and set the glass down. He motioned to the plates once they were
done. "Shall we enjoy our meal then?" He smiled still, only to
be replaced as he quietly slid the table a tad closer so they
       could reach easier.
His hand lifting the fork and twirling too get a small bite,
before he took in the first bite of their meal. The sauce was
both tangy and sweet, the noodles were boiled perfectly and the
oregano and garlic added just a small hint of something more
Italian. His smile still apparent as he set the fork down and
took up a napkin to wipe the corners of his mouth. Taking
another small sip of champagne as he looked over at her and
smiled. "I don't mind if you can't eat it all, I'll normally
save it for later, but this champagne has to be gone by the end
of the night." He chuckled lightly, only just barely brushing
his hands over another candle as it lit back to life. His eyes
focused on hers as he smiled and nodded. "Other than that,
anytime you need anything at all, I'm right here. I'll give you
an extra key so you can get in whenever you want, or whenever
you need to." He smiled again before nodding his head again
slightly and continuing to eat his meal, a bite of spaghetti and
a small bite of toast still left as he sighed and sat back and
took the cup into his hands, swishing the champagne around
before downing it with one drink and filling it up again.
Looking over at Berlin and tilting his head slightly. "Are you
scared of me?" His voice rang out only slightly as he took
another small sip, and sat up sliding to the edge of the couch.
He was looking at Berlin still, and patiently waited for her to
finish her meal before asking his question.

Berlin took her respective glass of champagne, ‘tinking’ it
against his before bringing it to her lips. If there was one
thing she wanted it was to forget running into those bad guys,
and alcohol would surely do the trick. Of course she wished he
had a stronger version, but this would do. It was rather
unlady-like to chug a bottle of tequila, not to mention it would
make Berlin act quite... different. So she decided against
complaining and took a small sip, allowing the tart liquid to
wash over her tongue. She set it down just next to her plate,
eyes somehow unable to leave Derek. “A wonderful love life, hm?”
A manicured eyebrow rose and a small glint of disappointment
entered her eyes at all the possible meanings of what he said,
some of them more exciting than others. “We shall,” She said
with a nod of her head, reaching out eagerly to grab her
silverware right when he pulled the table closer to them,
causing her hands to miss by inches and a fit of giggles to
bubble out of her. “Woops.” Teeth captured a pink lip, the
coloring complementing the hint of embarrassment entering her
cheeks. Her eyes turned bashfully away from Derek’s, watching
her plate intently as her fingers curled around the fork,
swirling the long spaghetti noodles around the prongs. Mouth met
the fork halfway, taking the food. She immediately sat up
straight, eyes alight as they looked at Derek. “Mm!” Deciding it
would be best not to talk with a mouth full she chewed and
swallowed as quickly as she could. “This is so good! Where did
you learn how to cook like this?”
Berlin was never one to cook amazingly, and spaghetti was an
easy dish to make. But the way Derek did it, with so much
swagger, gave it something special that Berlin appreciated. It
was absolutely amazing -- well the spaghetti was. At that
thought a hand reached out to the garlic toast, selecting one
and taking a small bite out of it only to taste it. Like
everything else, it was perfect. A dreamy sigh left Berlin’s
lips. She was undoubtedly liking this role Derek was taking in
her life, despite their relationship being so young. The way he
spoke, tone, word selection, it was so sincere and Berlin could
easily believe everything he said; and it felt like she knew he
       couldn’t lie to her.
A hand gesture waved off his words. “I can promise you that the
champagne will be gone by tonight.” Her words were mumbled, more
directed towards herself rather than him; but she did, however,
give him a smile, looking immediately away to get another bite
of her food. It was at that exact moment that Derek’s hand waved
over a candle, lighting it. Berlin, being fully involved with
her food, didn’t take notice of the odd action, rather when she
looked up she smiled even wider at him. He spoke once more,
capturing every inch of her attention. She watched the way his
jaw twitched with each word he spoke, taking note of the way his
neck muscles flexed ever so slightly... And he was looking at
her. Seemed to be waiting. Almost as if he had just spoken to
her. Berlin closed her eyes, attempting to remember what he just
said. Realization dawned on her. She forced the champagne-tinted
saliva down her throat. “A key? Do you think that is necessary?
I mean. We’re strangers to each other still, and with a key I
could barge in at any time I wanted...” A thought crossed her
mind; walking in on Derek and some chick doing.. stuff. That
caused her cheeks to flush, feeling a flash of jealousy cross
over her eyes. She forced the jealousy and blush away with a
shake of her head. “You don’t have to do that. I’d take your
willing hospitality over having a key any day. Like a vampire,
I have to be invited in, I won’t just come in.” A sheepish smile
crawled onto her face and she looked at her food, unable to see
       his reaction.
Before she could get one she heard his next question. She slowly
brought her glass up to her lips, letting it linger there more
than necessary to stall her answering his question. The glass
was set down as soon as she thought of an answer. She’d seen
what he did to those thugs. It was incredible that he could do
that by himself. He was strong, outweighed Berlin, and
intelligent. Add that to his good looks and he was a threat to
anybody. But there was something about him that told her he
wouldn’t hurt her. That he would protect her. And that made her
feel safe with him -- probably too safe.
“I know how strong you are, how smart you are. You could kill me
in seconds. But I have a feeling you won’t do that to me.” She
smiled up at him, soon sliding out from the table and up next to
him, her food somewhat eaten. The sudden change of conversation
from joking to serious causing her to lose some of her appetite.
For food anyways. The champagne glass was already clutched in
her hand and she downed the last little bit in one gulp.

He shrugged his shoulders and laughed deeply, chest rustling as
he did so. Only to shake his head and sigh. "I've put a lot of
years behind a lot of things, all that have broadened my
horizons towards life, love, and even just everything around the
world." He shrugged and slowly looked at her again before taking
another swig of the champagne. "I'm just a well rounded normal
guy." He laughed slightly, swishing the liquid around his glass
before taking a breath and downing it all in one gulp. He eyes
soon downcast at the empty plate and empty glass before he
looked up. His hand placed firm on the table as he slowly raised
his hand a small key appearing where his hand once occupied
before he finally looked up at her after her explaining her
answer to his latest question his head tilted as he chuckled.
His head shook slightly as he sighed. "You say that might not be
too honest dear but I know there is something hidden in all of
us that needs to escape." He chuckled and shrugged his shoulders
as she downed her drink and set the glass on the table. He
smiled and stood up moving closer to her as she did to him. His
eyes focusing on her as she was focusing on him, his hand
tilting her chin up lightly as he leaned down, pressing lips to
hers as he smiled and pulled away with a light smile. Before
sliding the table further away and setting the bottle of
champagne in the bucket and the bucket onto the table. His hands
lightly grasping her hips and kissing her cheek once more before
       letting out a soft sigh.
Removing his hands and taking a breath he shook his head. "So
let me get this straight, you will not take the key, but you
will however trust me to protect you, keep you safe, and respect
you. How does that make sense, even if you do like me, I am
still a stranger. Somehow one that you are willing to kiss and
flirt with. Although you'd rather be invited." He took a breath,
closed his eyes and shook his head. "A willingness I respect,
though dumb as it may be to trust a stranger so willingly... I
do respect your ideology on why you trust me so hectically.
Though I am not complaining one bit, it still intrigues me to
much that a human can be so trusting of a stranger." He sighed
and touched his finger to her forehead then to the middle of
your chest. "You have a magnificent heart, and very intelligent
brain. Do not let anyone get too close, not anyone, ever. Or you
may just lose them both. Now excuse me for a second and we can
continue the night soon enough." He nodded, removing his hand
from her chest and lifting her chin with one pointer finger,
lips politely pecking her cheek and a smile flushed across his
face. "Now for just a moment I need to venture into the kitchen
dear. As desert beckons me fairly well. Plus I see we are done
with dinner." He smiled again and nodded, sitting her lightly
down and taking the plates into his hand. Carrying them to the
kitchen and setting them onto the counter before flicking open
the fridge and pulling out a few containers as he shook his head
and shrugged. "Eh I don't see why not..." He sighed to himself
and closed the fridge again before slowly spinning around on his
heel and making towards the living room. Again with a smile as
he entered and made a light fluttering whistle like a small
canary as he walked to the couch and pulled the table closer
again and sitting on the couch with his legs crossed and nodded.
Flipping the tops of the containers and revealing a small
container of flushed gummy bears, that seemed to linger of
alcohol as he smiled and nodded towards the bears. "Nice touch
to a childhood memory." He chuckled lightly and took two purple
ones out and set them in the bottom of the glasses and filling
them each, handing one and crossing his arms with hers. "To a
lovely night of drinking, and being safe and sound with a good
new neighbor." As he smiled and nodded to her to a smile. "To a
       good night."

A brow rose skeptically “You, Derek, are far from normal.”
Having said that she chuckled along with him, shaking her head.
Her eyes followed his hand, and when it rose to reveal a key a
look of astonishment took over her face. Not only was he a great
guy, but he could also do magic tricks. The thought caused her
to giggle, but she didn’t dwell on it, for as her mind went
deeper, she began to think of different things. Mostly about
Derek not being a normal human like Berlin, but that wasn’t
possible, right? A small shake of her head tossed the silly
thoughts out of her mind and she refocused her attention back on
Derek, once again getting caught up in the masculine structure
of his being, but this time her ears listened intently to what
he was saying. “Oh?” Her eyes settled on his face, irises
simmering. “Amuse me: What do you think is hidden inside me that
needs to be let out? Just guess - take a stab in the dark...”
She was going to say more, but her breath caught in her throat
at the realization that he was moving closer to her with a hand
on her chin to tilt her head up. It was a position where she
could guess what came next, so she allowed her eyelids to
flutter close as their lips brushed against one another's. It
was a sweet kiss, one filled with innocence that was able to
make the butterflies in her stomach go crazy.
Her lips mimicked the light smile on his face when the kiss was
ended, and she had to resist the urge to touch her lips with her
fingertips. Again, she was caught off guard by the mysterious
Derek when he placed his hands on her hips. That position was
even more intimate than the kiss before and she was just about
to pull away and refuse when his lips came in contact with none
other than her cheek. Yet another innocent kiss sent shockwaves
through her body. She would never admit to the kind of power he
       held over her.
Berlin forced the butterflies into a jar so they could no longer
wreak havoc in her stomach, extinguished the beginnings of a
fire that was starting to burn in her eyes, and looked Derek
full-on, face holding a hint of amusement. “If you didn’t want
such things thrusted upon you like that, then you shouldn’t have
protected me against those guys. You did over and above what any
other normal guy would have done, which could explain why my
expectations for you are greater than normal.” Her brows
furrowed slightly. “And look at you! Stranger or not many women
would flirt and want to do more than kissing with you.” Now a
playful glint entered her eyes, a hand reaching out to
childishly poke his chest. “You’re just lucky I have self
control.” A giggle tacked on to the end of her sentence, and she
averted her eyes as if that would also hide the pink blush
entering her cheeks. But, as the conversation took on a more
serious note, the playfulness left her. “Not even you?” She
whispered, looking up with confusion obvious in her eyes. But by
that time he had left for the kitchen to get dessert, whatever
       it may be.
It did, however, allow her to think and analyze. To some extent,
he was right. Why had she put so much faith and trust in him?
Her only current explanation had to be she was scarred now. She
would never feel safe again knowing what was lurking in those
dark alleyways. And Derek being the one who so gallantly
protected her, and proceeded to beat their asses, was a little
slice of heaven. He was safe. And the flirting? Who wouldn’t
flirt with him? Besides, he was flirting back just as much. The
kissing wasn’t even her problem to deal with. Excluding some
innocent ‘thank you’ kisses, every other one had been initiated
by Derek. So he was the one kissing her, not the other way
around. She couldn’t deny them because.. look at him! She saw
what he did to those thugs, and he could easily do it to her, so
why fight back? Besides, those little kisses calmed her mind,
       put her at ease.
Her train of thought came to an abrupt stop when he returned
with containers of gummy bears. Honestly, she would be content
eating plain ones, a childhood favorite of hers. But the gleamy
sheen on the candies showed there was more to the catch. Alcohol
was an added bonus. A parade of giggles left her being when he
filled up the glasses and circled his arm around hers. “To a
good night!” She echoed, tinking her glass gently with his
before taking a drink a little too eagerly for her liking. There
was enough common sense in her not to down the whole thing in
one gulp, so she took a generous sip and placed it back down
onto the table, all the while resisting the urge to fish out
that gummy bear. Eyes looked at him out of peripheral, a little
smirk playing on her lips. But as soon as the semi-flirtatious
look came across her face it was gone and replaced with one of
glee, noticing the two container filled with the bears. A little
noise of joy was let out and she perked up, reaching a hand out
eagerly to captures a few of the alcoholic gummies, popping one
into her mouth with a smile.

He had no sooner tossed his glass back and it seemed like the
alcohol just disappeared from the glass. Setting the empty glass
on the table and chewing slowly on the gummy bear before finally
swallowing he let out a light warm breath. Filling his glass
another time and setting it down the time, popping several of
the small gummies into his mouth and chewing quietly before
flicking the remote and the t.v clicked to life. Streaming news.
Small wrecks here and there, and even small scenes of attempted
homicide and Derek no sooner laughed and shook his head. "If you
can't finish what you start, then there's no reason to start in
the first place..." He sighed and covered his face slightly. "At
any rate at least no one was seriously injured." He flicked the
channel again and on popped a black screen with low rhythmic
music playing in the background. He shrugged and tossed the
remote down and again chugged the glass of champagne as he stood
up and looked around. "Well then..." No sooner had he spoke than
a loud crackle of lightning resounded around the area, the t.v
immediately being shut off as he looked at the window and water
was pouring down as he tilted his head and sighed. "Of course
the power would be out..." He put his hand over his face and
sighed, letting his hand fall to his side as he picked up a few
more gummies and tossed one in his mouth. His hands resting at
his sides as he walked to the door and slipped the deadbolt in,
then slid the chain on with a smile as he turned around. The
lights dimmed down and then died as the candles kept the light
on. He chuckled and walked back over. "I think it'd be safer if
you slept in my bed tonight, I'll take the couch. We don't want
to risk anyone getting you in the hall now would we?" He
chuckled and slowly shook his head with a kidding gesture as he
flicked the last few bears in his mouth and then sat up with a
look at the door as it was hit with a loud "Thud!" He looked
back at her and stood her up with a smile picking up the gummies
and kicking the couch against the wall and walked her quietly
back to the couch. Sitting her back down and holding his finger
       to his lips.
"You still have no reason to trust me, but at least do yourself
a favor and stay back. I don't need another person getting
hurt." He smiled and kissed her head standing back up and
sliding the furniture back as close as he could. Before looking
back at Berlin and laughing. "I apologize for this rude
interruption, but I assure you it'll all be over soon enough."
He flicked open a cell phone and let it ring, finally speaking
in a clear voice with no hesitation. "Yeah, well no crap it's
me, who else would have this cell phone nimrod!?" He sighed and
shook his head. "That's not the point, they found me again and
it's getting more frequent, so help them if I have to leave
again... I just got settled in too..." Another sigh and he
clicked the phone off. Shaking his head as he walked to the door
just in time for another "Thud!" and he rolled his eyes without
even skipping a beat he flicked the lock off and slid the
deadbolt out before swinging the door open and catching
someone's fist as he laughed. "Huh, didn't think you were this
amateur." He shrugged and shoved backwards, a large amount of
thuds, and grunts resounding as Derek stepped back into the room
backwards and stood in front of Berlin his hands in open fists
as he stood straight and smirked. "I wonder who they brought
this time..." He whispered to himself as he waited and laughed,
watching five soldiers walk through the door and line up all in
front of him, then another larger male taking point as he glared
around the room. His voice deep and stale. "What a shit hole."
Then with a loud "Crack!" Derek connected an open palm punch
into his sternum, shattering his ribs and sending the air from
his lungs. Derek's smile soon cast around the room. "Please
refrain from insulting my home, it may not be much, but it still
is my current home. I'd be delighted if you all were guests, not
intruders. I don't see a warrant nor even a single trace of
evidence leading you to be able to bust my door open, nor did I
say you may enter. I'm giving you all till the count of five..."
He stopped speaking as they all raised the guns from their
sides. Derek squinting as he watched them all. "One." Derek
spoke just as they put their guns up fully and aimed them. "Two,
Three, Four..." He slowed down watching all of their fingers
slip on the trigger. His leg twitched as he crouched slightly.
"Five!" He exclaimed as he jumped landing a straight knee into
one of their necks. Sending him into the wall as he grunted
hitting the floor. Then things blurred for a second and all of
the men hit the ground with thuds as their gun's tattered to the
floor completely broken. "I will not condone this type of rude
behavior within my household, I'd ask for an apology but, it
doesn't matter. You guys still lost." He laughed slightly and
shook his head, approaching Berlin before kneeling at her feet
and looking up, one arm behind his head as he scratched his
head. "I'm really sorry you had to see that... I hadn't a clue
what they were doing here until now..."

Fear clenched Berlin's stomach. The alley, the power going out.
They were omens for something bad. She could feel it coming, but
was unable to see exactly what it would be. Whatever it was, it
was bound to scare the living daylights out of her. Her hand
twitched at her side, yearning the warmth of Derek's, but she
made no move to grab his hand. It would make her look weak, and
probably pathetic. Instead she slowly sat back down onto the
couch and clutched one of the decorative pillows to her chest as
if it would protect her from the bad feelings she was getting.
Or maybe it was the alcohol, it was hard to tell.
Derek's words weren't exactly comforting, but she couldn't help
the small smile that appeared on her face. Just as she
predicted, all good things came to an end. The thud on the door
made her jump. Legs curled under her as her body curved inwards,
making her body as small as possible. She had no idea what was
going on. And just like every other time her mind was whirling,
Derek seemed completely undated about it all. In fact, it looked
almost like he was expecting it to happen. That scared Berlin to
       even think about.
The kiss atop her head did little to calm her nerves, but it
didn't stop the wave of warmth that enveloped her when his lips
touched her skin. Her eyes closed to savor the feeling as Derek
took out his phone. She didn't listen to the conversation he was
having, having been focused on the sound of rain pelting against
the window instead. It didn't seem to be lightening anytime
soon, which would prolong the repair of the power lines outside,
leaving them in an indefinite period of darkness. Berlin was
never find of the dark. It was a childhood fear that seemed to
have never been dropped through her shift to adulthood. It
seemed even more scarier now after what happened in the
       alleyway.
Berlin nodded her head softly, putting complete faith in Derek.
A scream threatened to bubble out when the five men walked into
his apartment, all equipped with hard looks and a gun. What has
Derek gotten himself in to? She had no time to dwell on the
thought as all of the men trained the guns on Derek, who was
standing right in front of her. Berlin couldn't stop the small
noise escape her, but it was minuscule compared to the beating
of her own heart. It felt like it was about to explode out of
her chest. It was a wonder the men hadn't noticed her already.
But it wasn't like they had time to, either. After the initial
drop of the man who appeared to be their leader, the rest of
them were dropped soon after in only a blink of her eyes.
Berlin looked at the fallen men with a choked expression. What.
The. Hell. Just. Happened. Her water-filled eyes drifted between
Derek's sorry expression and the men on the floor. After a few
moments she lunged off the couch at Derek, arms wrapping around
his neck tightly. "What's going on?" She whispered into his
neck, nuzzling her nose into the crook of his neck. Being so
close to Derek let her breath in his scent, which she just now
realized was amazing. It was complete and unadulterated Derek.
Her nose stopped its nuzzling and her arms loosened, allowing
her to straighten her position enough so her lips were running
against the skin of his neck instead. She found herself placing
a kiss there, and another on the strong contour of his jaw. Her
lips ventured higher, spilling her alcohol-tainted breath on his
as she leaned in closer. They were just about to touch when she
pulled away and sat completely on the couch. "What are you going
to do with the guys out there?" She asked with flushed cheeks.
God. The alcohol was definitely getting to her.
