Key Word: Survival.
By: Kyra Date: April 26, 2013, 2:47 pm
---------------------------------------------------------
Kyra's eyes turned to the side. There was nothing but silence,
an eerie silence that was touching her very bones. She liked
some sounds...Perhaps a sound that would give her the hint that
something or someone was nearby, but she was not granted this
luxury. She was left alone in the silence to only see what was
around her, as the rest of the world was faded from her ear
drums. Her violet eyes continued to search the ruins that she
padded through. Buildings crumbled to the ground after the mass
destruction and release of chemicals. Humans changed into brain
eating monsters, and animals grew to impeccable sizes to make up
for lost time, trying to take back what was theirs. Those who
were not a part of the ground zero were left to run for their
lives without the knowledge of what exactly was chasing them,
and that was Kyra. She had been out in the country part of
Texas, wandering when the explosion had happened. It seemed to
have left a mark across the world. News Stations were falling
apart and the world was practically ending without the touch of
technology. Those who had not lived without technology could not
live for very long, and within the very first week, The US,
alone, lost millions…
All because someone forgot to lock up chemicals. Very dangerous
chemicals.
The story had been all over the news, but agents of the
government were not able to catch the ones who had caught hold
of the chemicals, and by the time that they even got within
reach of them…the bombs were bouncing off the walls of
buildings, blowing practically everything within a hundred feet
to pieces. Miles and miles of those surrounding ground zero were
destroyed and fell within hours of the explosion. The acid
within the chemicals were wearing down the material of the
buildings so fast that those inside them were not able to
comprehend what was happening until the deed was already done.
Those who were not inside buildings or surrounding the bombs
when exploded were exposed to the chemicals that touched their
skin, rotting them from the outside in, but that only lasted a
while. The chemicals faded from the air, but were always
produced when and if the infected one touched a non-infected
one. Only one touch and the disease spread like wildfire across
her skin. A way to get it off is to cut that piece of skin off
or burn it to stop its ends. How it began to travel was through
the water systems. Cities, in connection with ground zero, that
shared water conservations were infested with disease. Most were
unable to diagnose the problem before it was too late. The
disease continued and the non-living-yet-living population began
to grow and the human race was failing. Fast.
This was only a month ago, and Kyra, having been the daughter of
a rancher and one who was not very popular with the technology
or going to the store that often was taught to live off the
land, live off the game that was provided for her in the wild
woods of Texas. She had helped a few, hoping to save friends,
but after a while, they all were infected, and she was left
alone. They didn’t listen to her…Kyra bit her lip as she ran her
fingers through the mane of her horse, Hyde. He snorted
underneath her touch and she smiled, planting a kiss on the back
of his neck before looking up across the horizon. “We should be
able to find some place to sleep soon.” She led Hyde on and
looked around her. A smog was still hanging over the city. She
could see the shadows happening everywhere, but she had to move.
She had to keep heading towards new water resources…ones that
were not touched by the disease.
She had to survive.

"...Oh, come out you Black and Tans;
Come out and fight me like a man;
Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders;
Tell her how the I.R.A. made you run like hell away
From the green and lovely lanes in Killeshandra..."
The soft singing filled his ears, as he looked out over the land
thruogh a pair of binoculars. It was a shame, that after all of
this, he couldn't even listen to his music anymore. Lowering his
binoculars he sighed, how far had it come that he was more
disheartened by being unable to listen to music, than not
knowing where any of his family and friends were, or if they
were even still alive.
How long had it been, a week, a month, a year? He didn't know
anymore, it had been so long that he didn't even know what month
it was anymore. That did't matter, not when there was a living,
walking, and killing nightmare spreading over the entire world.
He could still remember the day it all began, he had been a
patrol officer on the Dallas, Tx, PD. No one had been ready for
the nightmare that would occur. Thankfully he had been away on a
trip for a S.W.A.T. competition. Unfortunately most of his
friends on the police force, mainly his fellow patrol officers
ere not so lucky, as they were the first responders arriving to
the scenes of the explosions, only to be infected with the
chemical, and biological horror. He still remembered watching
the reports on tv, of cities all over North America, Europe, and
Asia, that were all struck simultaneously. It was like he was
watching a horror movie.
That was all over now, he had lost friends, and family, he had
barely served nightmare, after nightmare. Now he was here,
alone. Sighing he turned around, and smiled at the horse that
stood under the shade o a nearby tree. Well, maybe he wasn't
totally alone after-all.

---------------------------------------------------------
Kyra studied the landscape before her. She wasn’t sure where she
should stop for the night. She had to find a place where Hyde
would be safe along with her, so houses were not usually her
first choice…She didn’t like leaving him alone since that put
her in a spot where she wasn’t able to watch him. Pressing her
lips together, her eyes searched the different shadows that were
beginning to grow. The Infected would be out soon. Most came out
at night once they figured out that the humans were vulnerable.
She had no idea why they were looking for the humans, it was the
last thing that she had heard before the communications that she
had was finally cut off once the main power source was tapped.
The Infected were not as dumb as they looked. Some knew what to
do, while like in the human world, others didn’t. Sighing
heavily, she began to see a tree, one that was slightly hidden
by bushes from the road and one that was protected vines of
needles behind her. If she was to come across the Infected, she
wasn’t sure about that…
Her eyes shifted and she jumped off Hyde. Her fingers threaded
through his mane for a moment as she led with only her touch on
his chin to where she wanted him. He followed her without much
resistance and she let him go when they were behind the bushes
that were tall enough to hide most of them. Hyde snorted and
rubbed his muzzle along the length of her shoulder and Kyra
giggled before she pulled off her backpack and began setting up
a small bed. Once the bag was down on the ground, she looked at
him, and leaned in to kiss his muzzle before he pulled away and
snorted again. “Well then, if you didn’t want my kisses, then
you shouldn’t have nudged me, big guy.” She giggled and this
time, he came close enough for her to give him a kiss. “Okay, I
forgive you.” She whispered to him and ran her fingers over his
neck before up to his jaw where she held it as she gave him
another kiss on his muzzle. “Oh Hyde, what would I do without
you.” She whispered and knelt down and began making the bed that
she was going to have for the night.
As she was down there, she could hear hoof steps. She froze. The
Infected couldn’t touch animals…They would be Infected then die
because of the infection. Her eyes widened as she began to look
through the bushes. She could only see feet…well hooves. Her
eyes focused on them and Hyde let out a small neigh. She tapped
Hyde’s leg and he immediately ducked his head down to see what
was the matter. “What are you doing!” She whispered and Hyde
stayed quiet, keeping his head down so they couldn’t be seen
anymore before she looked again, seeing a foot on the stomach of
the legs now as it was getting closer. People? Person? Kyra
lifted herself slowly, and Hyde began to lift his head with her
and they both came up at the same time. She immediately pulled
her gun from its holster on her side and pointed it at the man
who was coming near them.
“Who are you?” She demanded. Hyde let his ears flop around, as
if he was going to roll his eyes, but only with his ears. He was
like a teenager.

Slipping into the saddle, Jake adjusted the M-4 that hung from
his chest so that it was down by his side. Looking up at the
sky, he frowned, it was almost dusk, he needed to find a place
to camp, safely. The last thing he wanted was for him and his
gelding Ulysses, to be caught in the open by a swarm of those...
things. He had seen what a pack of them could do to someone
caught unaware, it was a sight he would never forget, no matter
how much he wanted to.
He let Ulysses choose the path, as he relaxed in the saddle,
scanning for a potential campsite. That was until he removed his
canteen from its pouch on his belt and took a drink. That was
when he heard the all too familiar click of a firearms safety
being released. Swallowing the mouthful of water he had, he
slowly screwed the cap on the bottle, and slid it into its
pouch. Jake was sure to make sure he kept his hand away from the
rifle at his side, and the 9mm tucked under his shoulder.
"Hi there..." he replied in a drawl as he looked over his
shoulder towards where the voice had came from. "Names Jake...
And I really hope you don't plan on using that on me.." It was
then that he heard, and saw the other horse in the bushes.
Looking down at Ulysses he sighed, "Thanks for the heads up,
pal..." turning his attention back to the female voice, he
looked over his shoulder and gave a smile. "I have an extra MRE
or two in my pack, I'm more than willing to share."
Turning in the saddle more, he finally caught sight of the
petite woman who had a handgun trained on him. Giving her a
smile, his eyes never left her gun, "I have an extra bottle of
fresh water, only catch is you gotta lower that gun." he offered
as he deftly slid off his horse, and kept his hands up and out.
