       The Silent Aria
By: Barelli Date: April 9, 2013, 1:08 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
In the House of Hours on the mountain Sou sat Vorus Dur. From
the great city Saehe he had come, through the crystal Hall to
Oaeus, the world where songs of legendary beauty echoed between
its numberless mountains. For many, the songs that the A'aecia
sang could inspire tears of wonder, but for Vorus Dur they were
so much more. He was of the Vulmoon, of Vultur. It was a planet
of darkness and silence. Dur had been trained as an assassin
since birth, his ears built to make out the rustle of clothes,
the beat of a heart, the blinking of an eye. He could hear the
notes and chords of the song as only his brethren could, but
they were of a different mind than he. Here, in the House of
Hours, one of the monasteries of Oaeus, where the A'aecia sang
and thought of the universe and the gods and the future, here
Vorus Dur sat crosslegged, and listened, and was at peace.
"Vorus Dur." It resounded in his head like an echo in a crystal,
and the songs of Oaeus faded. "I have chosen you to retrieve
what was lost. The Book of Aria, my tome, has fallen into
Silence. There is another, a woman from elsewhere that will
accompany you in this. Venture where none have gone, retrieve my
Book, and you will be rewarded. This is your Holy tasking,
assassin." The crystal resonance vanished and the A'aeci
       Acapella continued.
Vorus Dur sighed and stood silently. Despite the sword at his
waist, the bow and quiver on his back and the long black robes
he wore, he made not a noise. He doubted that the completely
audio-reliant A'aecia even knew that he was there. He unwrapped
his silken blindfold from its place around his pale, almost
translucent hand and retied it over his white, grey-scleraed
       eyes.

A sound of cannon fire-like thunder resounded from the sky,
disrupting the peace that beforehand had seemed nearly
impenetrable. Thunder rattled the crystal halls, and they
knocked against each other making a ridiculously dainty noise.
The monks could be heard outside, confused and slightly worried,
rushing inside to report.... Raining fire? The monks inside
spoke with hushed voices, and looked outside to see what was
going on exactly. It was indeed strange, as the fire consumed
the fields, instead of scorching them, trees and flowers and
shrubbery bloomed in their place. Soon the entire temple was
surrounded and coated in color and flora. Thunder and lightning
still crackled in the sky, and eventually the fire gave way to
freezing rain. Some of the monks, who before had looked
confused, almost looked disappointed now. But they looked on,
and the rain covered the flowers in crystal, and now they
matched the hall. Some of the monks tutted grumpily, their peace
had been disturbed for some pretty jewel plants? Others, though
very few, knew who was coming and waited patiently, smiles
spreading across their faces as the clouds parted to a ray of
sun, casting a rainbow onto the ground.
A voice came before a body, a sultry sweet, albeit
sarcastic-toned voice, whispering through the monastery, "Well I
just wanted the outside to be as pretty as the inside." A tall,
slim woman shimmered into existence next, light bouncing off her
as she seemed to force herself to take shape. Long dark brown
curls fell past the woman's extraordinarily pale shoulders,
ending somewhere near her middle back. She wore a white
toga-like dress, and no shoes. But it was her eyes that made the
monks who didn't recognize her take pause. Her eyes swirled with
every color of the universe, and a few stars even twinkled
inside them. She batted her lashes at the monks and waved. She
was really waiting for a voice, which soon came. "Sabrina,"
Aria's voice echoed through her head, warm and familiar. "Was
that all necessary? My monks may never recover the shock. And
monasteries are supposedly known for being discreet." The woman
smirked, knowing the goddess secretly would never change what
she had added, and waited for her to go on. A missing book?
Sabrina failed to see how that was her problem, but was also
willing go forward with it anyway. She might as well meet this
man now, that she was 'partners' with.
Striding powerfully into the monastery, she simply pushed the
doors open, still giving a slight bow to the monks, and
approached the figure. She raised one eyebrow curiously, he
didn't look like anyone she'd seen before, and she thought she'd
seen everyone. Once within appropriate distance, she cleared her
throat and spoke sternly. "Hello. I'm Sabrina. Goddess of
Nature. At least on Earth. Who might you be, sir?" She had to
fight to spit out the formal address to the man, but until he
was identified she supposed it was needed. She looked around the
hall, smiling. It was quite beautiful, and the thrill of a new
adventure was started to seep into her veins as adrenaline
pulsing through her, the crystal reflecting the excitement right
       back.

It appeared that while he had been conversing with the Goddess
Aria, some things had happened. A Goddess of Nature from
somewhere called Earth had arrived, and it seemed that she was
addressing him. Aria had said that a woman was to be partnered
with him, but for this quest to require a Goddess... What
exactly was in the Silence that was so dangerous as to warrant
this? In fact, if a Goddess was being sent on this errand, why
was he necessary? There were many questions, but Dur was willing
to bet that the only way he was going to find their answers
would be to accompany this Goddess Sabrina to the Silence and
recover the Book of Aria. Dur padded his way to stand nearer to
the Goddess, his boots silent on the floor of the House of
       Hours.
"Sabrina, nature Goddess of Earth, I am Vorus Dur, Last Whisper
of Vultur." He spoke softly so as not to interrupt the A'aecia
in their endless acapella, but with enough force that the
Goddess could hear him. "You know of our task; let us complete
it with haste. Before we depart, though, there are questions and
answers. My question is this- What is your world of Earth? I
have roamed the Coincidence and heard the A'aecia sing of planes
that were and are and could be, but Earth has not passed my ear
       until now."

When asked about Earth, something in the Goddess' body language
changed, only slightly, but she appeared much more serious, and
her expression had darkened to one of quiet rage, her back
stiffening, and her lips pressed in a tight line. He could see
none of this, so she waited until she could control the furious
shake in her voice enough to sound normal, and spoke, her eyes
still flashing with hate. " I-It's beautiful. Now. It's mostly
water, but has these little continents people survive on. And it
has the sweetest animals- well, mostly. At the bottom and top of
the planet it has these huge glaciers that are also home to
animals... It's just stunning, really. Paradise. But only
because it's people have not developed the technology to destroy
it, and above all else respect it as something their god made.
Regardless of the truth of that belief, it keeps Earth safe.
But... Not forever. Earth's reigning species are humans, and
after a time, although it is thousands and thousands of years,
they will destroy it to the point where other planet's explorers
actively avoid it." Sabrina let out a breath, trying to calm
herself, and pried her own fingers off the hem of her dress that
she had clenched in her fist. "Anything else? If you don't mind
I'd like to get to know each other before we trust each other
with our lives. You have as good a guess as me as to what we'll
be facing, and I don't plan on depending on some stranger to
maybe help me out in a rough spot."

Voras Dur thought on what the Goddess had said. A planet of blue
waters and white tips of snow, but the people used what little
land they had? It seemed a tad silly, especially since these
Earth people were, apparently, going to destroy their own world.
Well, if they were already self-destructive enough that they
hadn't, couldn't, or wouldn't migrate to the much more sensible
and vast oceans as the Nau of Wusharamonsa had... Well. They
were just full of bad decisions, weren't they? But this Goddess
wanted to know more about him, and Dur supposed that she had a
right to know a bit about the person she'd be travelling into
       the unknown with.
"I hail from Vultur, one of the eight planets of the
Coincidence. It is a planet of clutching darkness and bitter
cold. For century upon century, my people, the Vulmoon, were the
most abundant life and source of food on Vultur. To that end we
became a race of hunters and assassins. After the Eight formed
the crystal Halls between the eight worlds of the Coincidence we
no longer had to resort to cannibalism, but we are still trained
as weapons for the days that we are necessary. I am a master of
weaponry, stealth and martial arts. As to what we will be
facing, none have gone into the Silence- the world below the
clouds. The A'aecia believe it to be a sort of Hell. The truth
of the matter is unknown to me, but if Aria saw fit to send the
both of us, whatever lay in Silence is surely dangerous. Further
still, whatever powers or knowledge that Her Book contains must
not become known to them." He waited then, to hear the Goddesses
       reply.

The smirk that usually preceded a good joke formed once again on
the goddess' lips, but only for a small jab. "You should
consider renaming your planet, 'We're So Hardcore and Gothic and
Prissy That We Can Only Eat Each Other.' Oh, and I asked about
you. Not your people." It was a joke that would've made sense to
a more modern Earth, so she doubted he would get it. Still, she
twiddled her thumbs gleefully, glad to at least get him back for
his disdain toward her planet. People weren't all bad, and if he
was so dense he didn't understand that, maybe her mockery of his
attitude would convey it. Curling a few strands of hair around
her finger, she smiled. Maybe she'd be stuck with some little
goth alien, but perhaps he would warm up a bit during the
adventure. He can't be like this forever, right? Walking away
from him, she sat at one of the few benches around the hall and
waited. Who knows how this would go, if even he had no idea what
       was coming?
She let her mind wander, to what she was missing back home.
Well, it wasn't really home but it was a place she was staying.
With her ex-wife. She sighed, disappointed in herself. She had
told herself she would not take care of the woman, but there she
had been, cleaning up the outrageous number of bottles strewn
through the house, and holding her hair back when her liver gave
up and her stomach forced everything out. She cringed at the
memory, her nose wrinkling. Why she was doing this, exactly, she
still refused to admit. But it brought on another thought. What
would her partner think of that? Well. He may never know, unless
he got off his high horse and got a little more personal.
Sabrina grinned, shaking her head. At the rate they were going
he would probably never even find out her age.

Was she making fun of him? An alien Goddess of nature had walked
into this monastery, asked him about his life and then made fun
of him. That would not do. "Very well. I was born into a clutch
of one-hundred and raised to kill alongside my brothers and
sisters. At fifteen, during the ritual Raul, I killed two
strangers and my sister, Vorus Mariah. More recently, I killed
Vorus Razt, my father and ruler of Vultur. He wanted to destroy
the Halls that connected Vultur to the rest of the Coincidence
and return us to our old ways. I disagreed with him. So far his
royal guard, sworn to avenge him, hasn't found me here. I hope
you'll excuse my overabundance of morbidity." Dur made a raspy
sound that might have been a cough or a laugh. "His guards did
not find the notion of avenging the one who was so attached to
the old ways as amusing as I did."
Dur turned and padded his way to the bench on which the Goddess
had sat. "Now you know of my world, my people, and myself. Why
has a Goddess of Earth, wherever that may be, come to the
Coincidence and what can you do that will help us not die in
       Silence?"

Sabrina was not prepared for the bluntness with which his
history was delivered, but took it in stride. Her only reaction
was a grin, and a softly spoken, "Been there, I know how it
feels," before letting him return to his line of questions. How
could she help? Her eyes followed him as he sat, and although he
probably could see it she offered him a smile. "Well. Although
it's been a long time since I've used my powers to their full
capacity, I'm sure with some training on the go I could be back
to tip-top shape in no time. The Silence... It's title is pretty
self explanatory, dark, morbid, thriving on evil... Probably, no
offense this time, a bit like your home. Which, if I'm right,
will be a formidable enemy for me, as it's what I was used to
fighting with little problem, but was overcome by, once. But in
my time when I was like the Silence, and the creatures that
dwell there, I learned how to thrive in that environment. So
really... I'm useful because I'm everything the Silence hates,
and also capable of being the Silence to the point of destroying
them without them ever knowing it was me because I could be one
of them. But if we're going for not so subtle I could always
just use my control of the forces of nature to blow them away."
She shrugged, ignoring that he could not see her. She looked
over at him, and elbowed him. "What about you? What can you do
to help? Sure you can kill people but I'm willing to bet this
Silence is a little more than just muscle, and if it's some
psychological thing... I won't be much good. My long life, which
has already included my death, has rendered me very vulnerable
to my memories and mistakes. So. You better have something
       good."
