The room’s temperature increases with every step I take forward,
every step that leads me closer to the front of the room and
into the front of the eyes of strangers. Something grabs a hold
of my stomach and gives it a good sharp twist when my slow
ascent is over. Opening my mouth to speak I look around the
room, trying to find something to focus on; nothing but the
stoic or bored faces of my newly acquired classmates stare back
at me. The first class of this new school would, naturally, have
me introduce myself with two facts about myself. What teacher
still uses such an elementary practice in high school? “Um … My
name is Jenna.” a hand runs through my hair, my weight shifting
from one foot to the other, “And, um, two facts about me? I like
to write, and I play the piano …” My voice struggles to keep a
steady and calm tone, but fails as the words crack and come out
as a rushed slur. Swallowing whatever pride I had in me I slink
into a seat situated in the back and pray that this day ends
quicker and better than it started.

Detia was flat-out snoozing in her class. She was nearly
nocturnal, so her early morning classes were treated as a
nap-time. The slam of the classroom door jerked her awake, but
after her initial jump scare she dozed off again, until a
stranger nudged her as they passed, and Detia heard someone sit
next to her. Begrudgingly rolling her face up so she could see
over her arm, she peered at the stranger before shaking herself
awake enough to introduce herself. "Agh. Hi. Who're you? And why
aren't you up there," she gestured toward the front of the room,
"with them?"
Her red eyes were still clouded with sleep, but Detia raked a
hand through her black and white streaked hair and offered the
girl a smile. Propping her face up on her hand, she let her
attention shift between the class and this new person.

The seconds on the clock tick by slowly, each tick bringing the
sweet sound of the end of the day closer. Scribbling doodles and
stray phrases on the paper in front of me I try to remember how
a human is supposed to breathe. It definitely wasn’t the battle
I was currently in; forcing air into my aching chest and then
trying to push it back out again. Flinching I glance over at the
girl sitting next to me. Had she been there all along? Stray
fingers click the pen in my hand as my words stumble out, “Ummm,
Jenna? And force of, habit?” Flashing a quick half-hearted smile
I glance away and focus back on the world I was building upon
the paper in front of me.

As the girl brushed her off, Tia raised her eyebrows, but
shrugged. Looking back at their teacher, watching him painfully
bumble through a lesson, she rolled her eyes. "Enough..." she
muttered. She snapped her fingers, producing a small flame, and
blew it away. Instead of extinguishing itself, it floated to the
ceiling, remaining there for only a minute before the fire alarm
shrieked angrily. She said nothing, only grinned as their
teacher directed them to leave class and go out to the football
field. Detia waited for the new girl, asking innocently, "So...
Where would you like to go?"

Words flowed from my fingertips over the paper bringing far away
places and people to life. It drowned out the slow tick-ticking
of the clock, the monotonous voice of a teacher bored with his
own lessons, and most of it all it eased the pounding in my
chest and the untied the knot in my stomach. The few minutes
spent in the fantasy land of my own creation was the closest to
feeling normal I had gotten since I had learned I would be the
new kid. The shrill sound of the fire alarm breaks the calm aura
that had wrapped itself around me. With a groan I glance over at
the girl waiting for me; she could possibly mean trouble ….
Tugging at the hoodie strings I shake my head quickly, “I’m not
familiar with this place …” I motion my free hand to indicate
the air and area that’s surrounding me. Walking alongside the
girl and behind the rest of the class to the yard my free hand
closes before opening once more to show a small butterfly made
of light. “I’m not even entirely certain I should skip any of my
classes on the first day.” Open. Close. My hand falls into the
familiar pattern with each new opening bringing a different
shape and colour of butterfly. “But then again, sitting in class
all day can always be done tomorrow and again the next day,”
these words were thoughts said aloud, something meant only for
me to truly hear. “Are there any good … bookstores or libraries
around here?”
