The moonlight, the setting, the feel surrounding them would have
been perfect if they were actually falling for one another....If
he had fallen for her, which was probably true since he had
asked for her hand in marriage, it was one sided. She was not
sure if she could ever love him the same. It was arranged
practically. She barely had a choice in the matter, but she was
going to go with her mind. She would need this in order to keep
herself alive...People would soon tire of her as their Marshall
saying that she was not efficient and more respected and more
determined men would come to claim her place. She had barely
made it to that spot on her own she knew for sure that many
people wanted her out of it because they saw her as unfit for a
man's job. It irritated her to the max, but tonight was not
about irriations, but about getting to know Leon on a deeper
level. Maybe this wasn't going to be a business deal, but more
of a partnership, a friendship that would have to be in awkward
situations... She blinked as they came to a stop in front of the
fountain, looking up at him as she asked him about the reason
       why he chose her.
Then her final question had seem to catch him off guard. He
paused for a moment, squeezing her fingers before he finally
went on with what he was going to say. He gave her all
compliments, but then he began commenting on how she dressed.
She nodded and turned her head."Of course. Not many approve of
that." She said with a sigh. "Though, that will never change."
She muttered and followed next to him as his butler called for
dinner being ready. She took in a deep breath and walked with
him, unsure if she would like a man who was going to say that he
didn't like that she was wearing pants like the rest of the men
all the time. She wouldn't be able to handle it. Could she? She
wasn't sure, but she would continue it on...and see if Derek was
alive or not..or not see him at all..Maybe she was a deciding
choice between her and another girl...Oh that hurt. Where was
her heart? Oh yes, out in front of the house. Perhaps it slipped
back in the moment they stepped out into the garden...
       Because the pain was back..
She walked inside with him, looking around them as they entered
into the formal dining area where the plates and chairs were
already set up. She bit her lip, looking at the fancy meal
already pulled up underneath shiney silver covers. She was not
sure what was underneath it. Pressing her lips together, she let
him pull out her chair before she sat down, letting her manners
come upon her and taking over in her mind all of the rules that
her mother had bored into her skull during her younger years.
They were finally paying off although she never thought of
herself as a wife, event planner, or even the one that would
have to sit at a formal place such as Leon's manor. She could
not see herself in this position at all. It seemed completely
unlike her. Tracing her fingers over the napkin that she rested
in her lap, she turned her head to look at him. "So, Leon, tell
me. What will be the duties as your wife?" She asked quietly. It
was boring talk, but she didn't know what else to ask...She was
confused on this part of the culture. She had never really hung
with the richest suits and ties type of men. She hung around
with the men who hung out at bars talking goofily about their
women as they drank way too much whiskey. they had stumbled and
started flirting with her before going outside feeling guilty.
That was not the type she was used to. She was used to giggling
about her horse and all the many adventures out on the trails,
not inside jokes about a certain tie that a man of hatred wore
to a meeting or even duties as such she was asking him now...
She was out of her comfort zone...
Out of everything she had ever known.

Leon walked with Lakota, smiling, yes she was perfect, he was
glad they had been promised. He would have the most beautiful
wife ever, and she would have a husband that was not only rich,
but cared for her. His mind came slamming to a halt at that
thought. Did he care for her? Of course he did, she wasn't from
money, so it certainly wasn't for a financial gain. Looking at
her again, she was beautiful, maybe he just wanted her for an
arm piece. No! He did care about her, and wanted to take care of
her. That was it, he liked her, and would take care of her, as
she required. Finally he managed a genuine smile as he pulled
out her chair, and sat across the table from her. Yes, this
night would be the first of many, and then they would get
married, and everything would be wonderful. Leon smiled and
looked up to see Zeke approaching with a bottle of wine. Leon
almost laughed aloud, "Zeke, my friend. I told you, once dinner
was served, you had the evening off." Zeke smiled as he first
moved to Lakota, "Yes, ya did Leon, but beggin your pardon, you
have horrible taste in wine. So I thought I would help." Leon
laughed and hung his head, "Lakota, this is Zeke... My oldest
friend... And my biggest pain." the black man smiled and opened
the bottle. "May I offer a merlot from the Bordeaux region of
France. This particular bottle was bottled just after the
revolutionary war." He explained, as he poured them each a
glass. Bowing he excused himself and whispered to Lakota. "Go
easy on him, he is a might foolish, but means well."
After Zeke had left, Leon kept looking between Lakota, and the
door he had left though. He was curious, but by te way they had
smiled, Zeke hadn't insulted him. Her question however caught
him off guard, "Well.. Ah... To be a good wife..." Quickly he
took a sip of wine and looked at her. "What about you, Miss
Skye, where were you raised? I have hawed somewhere around
       Virginia?"

Lakota looked at the table cloth, seeing the lace beneath her
fingertips as she traced the edges of it, where Leon couldn't
see the movement of her hands. She had never sat a table this
nice. She never though she would. The nicest thing she had ever
gotten was something that she had made herself, and even then it
wasn't really that nice, especially compared to this. Her
stomach was knotted and she was not sure if she was going to be
able to eat it all. She was nervous, scared, and sad. Derek
would have cooked her something with his own hands and then
picked on her for her hair or how she was doing something just
to make her laugh as she tried to protect herself. Shaking that
thought away mentally from her mind, she looked to Leon's
butler, Zeke she had come to know, came in with a bottle of
wine. Leon seemed embarrassed as he told his friend that he had
the evening off, but then again Zeke came back with the thought
that his wine choice was not the greatest. A small laugh escaped
her lips. "A man of wealth cannot choose good wine? Leon, I am
surprised." She said softly as she looked up at Zeke. His old
smile was contagious and she returned it, hearing his words.
Leon's cheeks were practically cherry when his butler spoke.
"Thank you." She said to him and he nodded his head and turned
away to walk back into the kitchen.
She glanced at the wine in front of her, it looked of richness
and she was not sure if she should prize it, or drink it. Taking
the latter, she lifted her fingers to surround the glass,
bringing the edge to her lips to taste the sweet wine upon her
tongue before setting it down and looking at him and asking him
what the duties as his wife would be. Would he want certain
attention? Would she have to become super woman and be on time
with everything...and know everythign? She wasn't sure and she
was not sure if she wanted to know the answer if he did have
certain expectations. Biting her lip, she looked at him,
noticing that he had stuttered a little bit and the words that
came from his mouth was not what she expected at all. She nodded
her head, looking down at the table again. "I was curious if you
wanted me to be of a certain standard..." Why was she asking
this? She would never be a part of a standard? Where was this
coming from? Oh yes, her mom. Her mom would have asked these
questions before Lakota was to get married. She was surprised to
herself that she represented her mother at all. Turning her head
to look at the window then following his gaze to the door where
Zeke had left, his question had seemed to take a right turn into
       unknown man's land.
"Yes, Hampton, Virginia. Right on the ocean side." She said
quietly. "It was beautiful for the most part." She said looking
toward him. "It was not much of an eventful childhood. Growing
into teenager years, that was interesting." She looked at him
with a soft smile on her face before it faded. "I was promised
once before." She said softly, letting her eyes fall to the
ground. She had thought of her and Derek's relationship might as
well been a promised one. Sighing heavily, trying to keep the
tears from falling down her face, she blinked and cleared her
emotions from her face. "But the man left, and everything was
       cancelled." She said bitterly.
Then a soft smile came back to her lips as she glanced at Leon,
looking into his eyes. 'But I don't think you will abandon me at
the altar..." She smiled, lifting her hand to touch over his
       own.

The fact that Zeke had done what he did actually relieved Leon,
as he watched Lakota. He could still feel the redness on his
cheeks, but he hoped Lakota would ignore it. He just felt so
foolish, ad childlike. As he ate he smiled and listen to Lakota
talk, it must have been beautiful where she grew up. Living
close to the ocean like that, he could only imagine it. Surely
it was better than New York. Yes, he could make a life with her,
spend their days together, of she wanted move back to Hampton.
His smile faded a he said she was left standing at the altar.
Someone actually left her? They were fools then, how could
anyone left someone so incredible. Well... Aside from her little
thing about dressing like a man.
Looking at his empty plate he stood, and walked around the table
to her. Taking her hand, he smiled, "Lakota Skye, any man that
would leave you is a fool and doesn't deserve you." Then he
leaned down and kissed her cheek softly, "Say... Would you like
an escort home, when you leave? I would have no qualms about
accompanying you." He offered and then looked around, "Also...
Would you like to dance? I mean there is no music, and if you
would like I could fetch Zeke, he plas the violin quite
wonderfully." He offered to her, as he stared into her eyes.

"Well it didn't even get to the altar part, but it might as well
have..." She took a deep breath in and glanced at him, noticing
he had finished his plate. She looked down at her own, having
taken a few bites of it. It was grand. Oh, so grand. She loved
it, but then she knew that her stomach would not let her ingest
anything else. Looking up, she followed his lead and stood from
her chair, glancing at him as he came to hold her hand, standing
closer to her than before. Was he getting comfortable with her?
Would she finally be able to see some emotion come across those
gorgeous features? Looking up at him, she let a small smile come
across her face as he complimented her. It was her turn to let a
little red come across her cheeks. "Thank you, kind sir." She
said softly as he leaned down to press a soft kiss against her
cheek. His lips were soft against her skin. It was like a
butterfly kiss. It was sweet and so soft, she barely felt it
       across her skin.
His question caused a bigger smile to come across her lips. "I
would like an escort. You can never be so sure about the streets
at night." She said softly. "I didn't bother to ready a
carriage, I hope you don't mind just riding along side me." She
said softly. "Or is that too manly for you?" She asked. Letting
her hand drop from his, as she turned her head. Soon there was a
silence and he asked if she wanted to dance, offering to fetch
Zeke to play violin, and she shook her head. "You gave him the
evening off. You shouldn't go back on your word." She said
softly. "We could go outside and dance to the natural song of
nature." She let a small giggle play across her lips. "Dancing
with no music but the sounds around us can be quite calming."
She remembered all those nights that Derek had danced with
her...being his sappy romantic self. She loved it...it was
       comforting...
It would never be the same with Leon...He wanted her in fancy
evening gowns, event planning, and being a never ending child
bearing wife. She wasn't sure if she could barely take care of
herself let alone a child. She looked up to the man as she
stepped closer to him, letting his cologne seep into her nose as
she did so. "Does my job's uniform bother you so much?" She
       asked quietly.

Walking outside with her, he smiled as he listened. She was
right, there was a natural song, he had never actually paid
attention to that. After all why would he? He had grown up
surrounded by large bands, and at fancy parties. Never had he
really taken the time to listen to nature. To him it was just
something to get in the way of his business. But here and now,
Lakota showed him different, she showed him what it was. It was
an orchestra, a grand symphonic band! His smile widen and he
stated at Lakota as he gently took her in his arms. She truly
was incredible. How could he not see it before.
The questions started coming then and though his smile lessened
it was still there. "Of course I won't mind, riding along with
you." He rpleplied as they danced. He did mind slightly, but he
couldn't let it show. However when she asked about her attire
for work, he couldn't help but flinch the smallest bit. That,
did bother him, and he couldn't hide it. She was a woman after
all, and he felt she should dress like one. He hesitated on his
answer then finally sighed and hung his head. "I... I won't
lie... It does... I mean you are beautiful, no matter what you
wear... But it just... It doesn't suit you..." He said quietly.
Having a feeling the night was now over, he sighed, "I'll have
your horse fetched..." He whispered softly, and stepped back.
"If I offended, I didn't mean to..." He explained and started to
       turn away.

Lakota looked up at the man who was now embracing her to the
song of nature. He seemed enlightened by the fact that nature
had a natural beat. She smiled, having feeling glad that she was
the one who gave him that enlightenment. The man had a heart,
she could see it, but she wasn't sure if it was enough for her.
Enough for her? What was she? Was she higher than him? Of course
not. She was disgusted with the thought and with herself when
she actually agreed with it. Pressing her lips together, she let
her eyes reach to look up into his, asking him a question about
her uniform bothering him. She watched him carefully, seeing as
how he was flinching when he spoke that it did bother him. She
wasn't surprised. Shrugging her shoulders, she looked at him.
"Well, not many men think that a woman could be their equal.
Soon they will be proven wrong."
She let a small laugh escape her lips. "I have a mind of my own
and that won't ever change." She said, looking up at him. 'I
hope you will be able to handle me. I think I might just get
worse with age." She giggled to herself before he sighed, giving
the signal that the night was now over. She was having slight
fun, but still, she felt as if it was all fake...arranged. She
turned her head and noticed when he called for the stable boys
to retrieve hail from his stall. She waited patiently, looking
at the man out of the corner of her eyes not sure if she should
say anything. Pressing her lips together, from saying anything
else, she watched Hail come into the light and out of the
darkness because of the lamp that was hanging off the front
porch. Smiling at him, she walked closer to him, giving a soft
kiss to his muzzle as she ran her fingers over his mane,
touching it and running her fingers through it. She loved this
horse. With all of heart. Grasping the saddle, she moved herself
to sit upon the tall horse side saddle. Glancing at Leon as he
climbed upon his own horse, she lifted a brow. "I can be a lady
though when I want to." She said.
"Leon, have you ever raced anyone on your horse? Or have you
been restricted from having fun?" She asked, a mischievous smile
overtaking her lips as she took hold of the reins.

Leon nervous rubbed his hands together as they waited and found
a smile. She was ingratiating, the more she said she would never
change the more he wanted to change her. It was his nature, if
someone said it wasn't able to be done he had to do it. Ever
since he was young, he remembered being the one to figure out
his to do what couldn't be done. Smiling he took her hand and
started walking toward the front of the house, where the horses
would be. Ove they reached there he watched Lakota move to her
horse and be incredibly gentle and loving to it. Smiling he
waited for his own horse to e saddled and moves to Lakotas side.
He went to help her into the saddle and Watche her slide up
without a problem. Laughing he shook his head and smiled, "That
shouldn't surprise me... But it does..." He stated and stared up
at her, listening to her speak and laughed.
"I haven't done that since Zeke and I were kids." He explained
and then stepped away as his horse was brought out. Patting the
animals neck he patted it lightly and swung into the saddle.
Looking over at Lakota he shook his head. "Do you really want to
race when you are riding side saddle?" He asked and moved his
       gelding closer to her.
Why was he acting like a little boy, who had his first crush? He
was a successful businessman and he had a beautiful woman
promised to be his wife. So why act like he had to try and prove
something. Shrugging he smiled, it did not matter. he was
       actually enjoying himself.

"Surprising that I can be a lady when I want to?" She laughed.
"Oh, Leon, I have many different sides that you do not know
about me." She said to herself as she turned Hail to face the
gate of his property. The shadows were dancing across the ground
in front of her. Leon was finally upon his horse moving to stand
beside her as she giggled looking ahead of her with a question
of him ever having raced his horse. His answer did not surprise
her. Men like him didn't have fun besides drinking until they
were tipsy and joining a bed with the women they had paid...She
let her breath hitch as she wondered that if he ever got tired
of her would he go out with other women...She turned her head
and looked at Hail when he gave her a questionable look, as if
noticing her mood change. Taking her bottom lip underneath her
teeth, she glanced at him. He was gorgeous. All the women
swooned over him...Yet she was the one who was promised...Would
that even matter to him when he got bored with her...? She
turned her head to look at the shadows. She sat taller and
glanced back at him with a genuine smile on her face.
"Well, Leon, be ready to eat my dust!" She kicked Hail in the
side and darted off into the darkness. "Leon! Come on!" She said
with a laugh as the wind blew back her hair. The farther Hail
ran the more bruised her leg became. She lifted herself up and
swiveled her leg to the other side and gripped the other foot
hold and she leaned forward whispering to Hail. "Fly like the
wind." And he did. He went faster and she was not sure if Leon
was going to be able to keep up. "You might lose me, Leon!" She
said with a happy giggle in her words and she turned a corner,
kicking gravel as she did so. Many people that were hanging
around town since it was coming alive this time, were looking at
her as if she was crazy. She was finally having fun. She felt as
if she was a girl again and she didn't have all of the
responsibilities anymore. She was free of her badge and she was
able to become herself again. Soon before she knew it, she was
coming up to her house and she and Hail skidded to a stop and
she felt her heart racing in her chest. Her breath was staggered
and she hopped off her horse.
"I think I might have beaten you, Leon Slater." She said with a
smile, looking up at him. The night was dark besides the slight
half moon light over seeing them. She could see and hear the
breath of Hail as he was reveling in the win. She would have to
bathe him in the morrow. He seriously needed it with all of the
push she has been putting on him. Turning slightly, she started
toward her house before she glanced back at Leon. "You want to
       come inside?" She asked.

Pushing the back door open, Derek smiled, home, hje was here at
last. He could really remember the past two days. The only thing
he did remember was waking up, and his horse being dead, his eye
swollen shut, and his back seriously hurting. Hearing a horse
whinny behind him he smiled, Thor, the only horse who he had
ever truly considered his, mainly because they were friends, and
Thor had a personality. One that was very much like Lakota's,
now that he thought about it... No wonder he and the horse got
along. Closing the door, he stumbled into the dark kitchen, and
feel into the wall. Holding himself up, he moved slowly, and
eventually made it into the living room, where he fell to the
couch. Coughing he held his side, he was too exhausted to get
       up, but he needed water.
Stumbling to the kitchen he felt around until he found a glass,
and went to the sink. Working the pump handle, he soon had water
spilling into the glass. Stopping, he shakily lifted it up and
drank. The cool liquid ran down his throat, tasting like honey,
to him. Closing his eyes, he stopped, and gasped, feeling
       slightly better.
That was when he heard voices. Moving to the kitchen wndow, he
peeked out from the shadows, and saw two people on horses. One
was Lakota, and the other a man he didn't recognize. What truly
caught his gaze though, was lakota wearing a dress. Derek was
dumbfounded, he didn't know what to do, as he watched.
