Re: Outlawed Love

The sound of hurried, horse hooves filled the air and was all
Derek could hear, and was all that mattered. It meant he was
heading home, heading to Lakota, riding for the arms of the
woman he loved. It was an odd love that was true, but that would
change when he came back. He wouldn't argue with her anymore, he
would listen, and talk to her, he would change. For her, he
would be the gentleman she deserved, he would try and find some
way of becoming regular again, not an outlaw. Leaning down in te
saddle, he gave Thor his head and spurred him harder. It would
be hours before he got back, he would be late, but he would be
there, he had to be there. He could feel Lakotas lips on his,
see her smile and hear her laugh.
Breaking into the open from the trees, he thundered across the
ground, whispering words of encourgement to his stallion. He
would get to the woman he loved, one way or another. When he got
there he wouldn't leave, even if it meant hiding in her house,
he would stay for her.
Just a few more hours, he thought as he smiled, late, but he
would make it. Suddenly though, Thor lurched forward, and Derek
looked up, they were headed down a steep hill. He felt himself
go free of the saddle, his arms flailing, as he hit the dirt,
and rolled. The last thing he saw before being knocked out, was
Thor going down, and his neck bending at an impossible angle.

Lakota laid there in the dark with her body wrapped up in a
blanket as she curled up on her bed. Underneath, her curves were
bare of the fabric she had been wearing. She had pulled off
those clothes and settled into something more revealing, lacy..
The satin was soft against her skin, making her feel as if she
was a princess and this was her first night with her husband.
Soon she would be a wife. Her eyes were faltering. It was late,
but she didn't bother to check the time. He would be there soon
right? He had promised her...
Tonight, I promise. I will be back tonight."
They echoed in her mind as she curled up on her bed. A draft had
caught over her body, draping over her like a blanket above her
already covered body. Her head was falling...Her eyes were
closing slowly. She sunk into her sheets, settling into her
pillow as she curled up. She was too tired to cry. She was too
tired to even move..It hurt. Her heart hurt. As much as the
first time...She cringed and she bit her lip, before letting
them part. "Duke!" She called and soon the mastiff was coming
into her room and cuddling with her on the bed. She didn't care
if he smelled or if he stunk up her bedroom. No. Not tonight.
She wrapped her arm around his chest and curled into his back
side and he just laid there and it was only a few minutes before
he was knocked out. Instead she laid there with her eyes
slightly open, but after time passed...felt like a year had
passed before her eyes fell closed and she fell asleep to the
even breathing of Duke.
Next morning, she was awaken by the movement of Duke. He let out
a groan as he stretched before crawling off the bed and out of
her arms. Her eyes opened and she found that beside her...the
bed was still empty.
She was still alone.
He didn't arrive.
Another broken promise.

Derek smiled and stroked Lakotas cheek, the sun was making her
sleeping face glow. She was so beautiful, he didn't understand
why he had left her, well aside from being an outlaw. Staring at
her, he leaned over to kiss her, but couldn't move, shaking his
head, he tried again, and had a searing pain cross his back.
Gasping his hand touched his back and he winced, staring back at
Lakota, he opened his mouth to speak but groaned instead. That
was when he blinked and gasped as he woke up, and found himself
laying half in, half out of a creek. Rolling onto his stomach,
and coughed, his mouth was dry, and his throat sore. Looking
around, he blinked and found he could only see through one eye.
Crawling to his knees, he gently felt his body, and aside from
the horrible pain in his back and his swollen left eye he was
fine.
He stood shakily and looked around, that was when he saw Thor,
the horse was between two trees. Even from where he was, Derek
could see that the horse had broke its neck, and he started to
cry. Thor had been an excellent mount, even if he had the
wildness from him being a stallion. He couldn't believe the big
strong animal had died like this. Stumbling over to him, Derek
sat and pet the animals muzzle, "I'm sorry, lad." He murmured.
Lakota, he had failed her. He had promised he would be there,
and he failed her, again. This just kept getting worse, worse,
standing shakily, he wiped his eyes, and clenched his jaw. He
would get to Lakota, he had to. Even if it meant walking into
the Marshall's office, and turning himself in. Shakily he
realized he had to cross the river, and signed. Worse, and
worse.
Falling into the water, he slowly swam across, not before being
swept down river several hundred feet. Crawling out, he got up
and began to climb the other bank. He would get to Lakota, he
had to.

~Thursday~
Lakota let her eyes fall open. There were slight bags underneath
her eyes. She hadn't slept well since the night that Derek
didn't show up. She wasn't sure if he was even alive. Did the
Pinkertons get a hold of him? Was he roaming around somewhere
half dead? Was he laying in a ditch somewhere...Where was Thor?
His horse...He would have returned to Hail if Derek was dead,
wouldn't he? Unless Thor was dead too...She shook her head and
ran her fingers through her hair, she couldn't think about this
anymore. A couple of nights ago was a mistake. Why had she let
him use her like that? He said he loved her. She was shaking so
badly as she lifted herself from the couch. She couldn't sleep
in her bed with the thought of having those dreams with him
surrounding her. Pressing her lips together, she planted her
feet to the ground, moving Duke in order to do so, and she
lifted herself up to walk toward the bathroom where she started
the heater and putting water into her tank.
Walking back out of the bathroom, she fed Duke and started
making her some coffee. She wasn't hungry... She couldn't eat.
Her stomach couldn't handle food, let alone real food that took
a time to make. her eyes looked over to the horizon through the
window in her kitchen and she watched the stables seeing the
horses as they were walking into the circle. She leaned against
the sink and closed her eyes for a moment. She couldn't help it.
Her heart ached and her stomach churned at the thought of seeing
him again. Turning away, she walked through the living room to
go to the bathroom and took her bath before she got ready for
work.
Thursday.
Leon day.
She sat down in her office, dealing with people all day, hearing
their worries about the gang who had been coming closer. She all
gave them assurances that some of the gang was dead, and that
would cause them to stay away for a while. They all calmed at
that and soon left her office with a small smiles on their face
as they felt a little more safe. She on the other hand felt like
crap. She leaned into her hand, closing her eyes for a moment.
It was getting to be late and soon Leon would be there at home.
She took in a deep breath and she walked out of the office, and
climbed upon Hail before heading home. She took off her hat and
laid it on the table before she began heading towards her
bedroom. She had to dress up for him. She needed to be wife
material. She could hear her mother's voice in her head. "he
won't wed you unless you are a lady, Lakota." She would say
before she would get onto her for not standing straighter and
pushing her bosom out. She took in a deep breath and wrapped her
hair in a bow and put on some powder and other makeup that she
had gotten weeks before.
She settled into something simple, and one that expressed her
curves beautifully. Setting herself at the table, she sat there.
Dead like.
She needed to breathe and get over him.
Why did it have to hurt so much?

Derek stumbled up over the hill, and smiled, there it was, New
Orleans, the city where the love of his life lived. He had taken
far longer than he should have, but he hoped she would
understand, hopefully. Swallowing, he coughed, and doubled over,
as he started to cough, and fell to his knees. He was so
thirsty, and hungry, he hadn't dared drink the stagnate water he
had came across, and he hasn't found anything his revolvers
could reach. But that would end shortly, he would be in the home
of his love Lakota, and be able to eat. Looking up at the sky he
frowned, it wouldn't be until dark that he got there.
He hoped she would understand. She had to.

Thursday. Today was the day. It would all change today. Leon
Slater had a plan, ever since he screwed up that kiss on Monday.
Combing his dirty blonde hair back, he smiled. Yes. Today
everything would change between him and Lakota.
Several hours later, he sat at his desk in the railroad office,
filling out forms, and checking maps. He was barely able to
remain calm, and keep his composure, as he waited for Zeke. The
man should have been back by now, what was keeping him. Sitting
up, he leaned back, and shevked his pocket watch. "Damnit, Zeke.
Where the hell are you?" just as those words left his mouth, the
door opened, and Zeke came in smiling, and looking as happy as
could be. Leon almost laughed at how comical the grin on his
friends face was. "So, you going to stop grinning like a
Cheshire, and tell me what happened?" Zeke sat, then jumped up,
and kept smiling. "Well Mister Slater, I got the flowers you
wanted, sir. Then I met the prettiest girl Eva." Zeke sat again,
and took a breath.
Leon dmiled and congratulated him, it looked like he wasn't the
only one with a bright day ahead. He couldn't wait to see
Lakota, the day was dragging by for him. He wanted a second
chance at that kiss, and he hoped she liked the flowers.
Looking at his watch again, he sighed. The minutes ticked by.

Lakota could feel her heart in her throat as she went to the
stables. She was going to ride to the manor, his supposed
address. She bit her lip as she bridled Hail in his best. The
black leather and golden studs stuck to his black and white
peppered body. She looked at him. "Get ready to face the music
Hail. Derek and Thor will not be coming back anymore. It's just
going to be you and me for the rest of time." She said somberly.
The horse looked down and she knew that he was saddened by her
words. She kissed his head and ran her fingers over his
birthmark before she wrapped her arms around his head, holding
him close for a moment. "I love you Hail, my friend." She
whispered and he snorted, pulling his head away from her body
and looking at her before resting his head on her shoulder. She
could feel the tears coming to her eyes, but she couldn't let
them fall. The time was ticking by and Leon was waiting on her.
Pressing her lips together, she gave her horse one last embrace
before she pulled away to look at the horse. "Shall we ride?"
The horse nodded. "Be careful with me. My hair is recently
curled and I need to continue and look pretty." The horse seemed
to snort in laughter. Giggling slightly, she climbed upon his
saddle and stretched in just a way so then she could ride side
saddle as she couldn't ride split with a dress on. Her legs were
open for bruising from the barely used saddle.
She clung to the reins as they jogged down the street, passing
carriages that held other couples who were happy. She could see
some friends laughing as they walked out among the town. She
nodded her head to some, and she kept looking forward. She
couldn't get herself to look at them any longer. She would
break. It was going to happen. She couldn't think about Derek
anymore. It hurt too much. No. She took in a deep breath and her
chest hurt even more with the contraction of her already broken
heart. It ached, and it never seemed to end. Would she finally
find peace with the fact that she was probably never going to
see Derek as more than just a guy who came around to see her
when he could? She sighed heavily, even saying his name made her
heart skip a beat and the beat was even more painful than the
last. She took in a deep breath, pulling up to the gates that
were Slater Manor. She looked upon the architecture that
surrounded her. It was beautiful. Wrap around porches, rocking
chairs on the front porch and the scent of fresh cut grass and
grown flowers surrounded her. This was what she wanted, what she
dreamed...At least she would be a little happy in this house if
it ever came down to it.
The saddle helpers came to gather Hail and she nodded to them,
and headed for the door, seeing the chandelier through the glass
above the wooden door. Oh, the house was maginificent. She
forgot about her heartache and just fell into a little girl of
wonder. She was amazed by this house, now if only the man
standing behind the door was just as inspiring...
She stepped through the door and looked upon the amazing
furnishings surrounded her and she could smell the lemonade
through the air. Her eyes settled upon Leon who was standing
there.
Time to be a big girl.
The door closed behind her, leaving her insecurities, her
thoughts, her failures, and most of all, her heart outside, with
the shadows of the night...

Leon strode through manor, looking around, and making sure
everything was in place. He needed the place to look
magnificent, it had to for her. Looking at his watch, he
swallowed and combed his hair back. A nervous habit, he couldn't
get rid of, according to his mother he had picked it up from his
father. Straightening his coat, he checked his watch, Lakota
would be here soon. He was a nervous wreck, as he waited. What
if she didn't like it, what if she would prefer something far
more simple? Oh god, what if this was wrong? He just ruined it
all, she would hate him for flaunting his wealth like this.
Leaning against the rails of the second floor he stated down
into the main room. Just then someone touched his arm and he
jumped. "Leon, she is arriving." He turned and saw Zeke,
standing tall and wearing his nicest suit. "Thank you Zeke." He
said shakily, and hurried down the steps.
When he reached the bottom step, he saw Lakota walk in and his
breath caught. she looked magnificent her hair was beautifully
curled and had a wonderful dress on. Walking forward he smiled,
and tools her hand, "H-" He swallowed, and smiled, blushing
slightly. "Good evening, Miss Skye." He said softly, and kissed
her hand just as lightly. "Ah... Dinner is almost ready... So
ah... If you want... We could... Um..." He blushed furiously,
and smiled, what was wrong with him! "Would you like to take a
walk in the garden? I have found it to be very warm suddenly..."

The lemonade air was surrounding her, draping her like a blanket
as she turned her head to see Leon standing there in his
beautiful suit and tie. She felt a blush come across her cheeks.
Why would he want her? What was so special about Lakota Skye?
Her eyes traced his face, seeing how he clenched his jaw. Was he
nervous? She smiled at him, stepping closer as he took her hands
in his own and was stammering. Oh. Wow. Leon Slater, a very
eligible bachelor was stuttering and tumbling over his words as
he spoke to her. She couldn't help but smile at him, squeezing
his fingers as he talked about dinner before asking her fully
about going out in the garden. She had not been through a stroll
for a while. She took in a deep breath and nodded her head.
"Show me the way dear sir." She smiled and let her arm lace
through his as they headed outside. Behind the house, there were
twinkling lights hanging off the house as well as being
connected to the many old oak trees that surrounded the
plantation. She smiled at him.
"This place is beautiful." She said softly and turned to look at
the rest of the twinkling lights over the garden, but as the
farther they walked, the moonlight was becoming the source of
most of the light. This was grand, and something she was not
used to. She knew that she would never have this with Derek. She
would be rich in love, not in money. Leon could be both if he
treated her correctly, but she wasn't sure if she would be able
to promise her heart to him...as it was within a ragged Outlaw's
chest while his own rested in her chest. She took in a deep
breath as she came to a fountain that was in the middle of the
garden. "Leon...what brought you to me?" She asked quietly. She
was curious. She was a loner practically, but she loved to help
the people of the Parish. As she was the Marshal over that
Parish. She gulped slightly, wondering if he was going for the
more emotional stand point or if he was going to go with the
cover way with looks and charm, but never deeper than that. She
waited, patiently, all the while, she was not sure how
everything was going to play out.
Since she was never going to see Derek again, she was not sure
about how she was going to be if she really went through with
this and married this man. Girls envied her. He was gorgeous and
she could actually agree with them, but could she actually feel
something for this man. He hadn't given her a part of him that
she could see as vulnerable. Only business...their marriage
could not be a marriage. No that would kill her for the rest of
her days. She couldn't be the wife that knew that she would not
be able to look at her husband as a true wife should. She would
hate him fort ehrest of her days if he was forcing her into this
like a business deal. With all of these thoughts running through
her mind, her eyes had turned to see the beautiful water, seeing
the reflection of the moon over the waves.
Her heart beat carefully, and slowly as her eyes looked into
his. She noticed that she had moved to stand in front of him,
still holding his hands within her own. "Trying to be the man
who can finally tame Lakota Skye, US Marshall?" She asked with a
slight joke coming past her lips with the words.

Leon smiled and could feel the sweat on his forehead, how just
by seeing her, had he gone from semi composed, to a complete
wreck? The only thing that consoled him was the fact that he
could feel her arm in his. He was so confused, and nervous, what
should he say, and what should he say? He was actually scared,
this woman had him tongue tied and speechless. Oh he felt like a
fool.
As they walked through the garden though, he relaxed, and found
himself looking more and more at Lakota. She was just
astonishing like this, nit even the girl he had liked back in
New York was as beautiful. The way her hair francs her face, and
her eyes seemed filled with wonder made him smile. Stopping
under an oak tree, he listened to her question and smiled. This
was good, he had this answer perfectly, he knew why he wanted
her. Taking both her hands in his he swallowed.
Just as he was about to answer, she said something, and though
her tone was joking, he felt his sentence freeze in his throat.
She had just hit the nail on the head, he started stammering and
froze up then swallowed. "Lakota, you are beautiful, and
wonderful... You are strong, proud..." He smiled softly,
"Frankly aside from the way you have to dress for your job, you
are perfect." He stated and started to lean in to kiss her.
Just then he heard Zeke hollar that dinner was ready. Sighing he
stepped back, and gave a weak smile. "Shall we?" He asked
slightly timid.
