Listening to Lakota speak, he watched her lips, wondering what
they must feel, and taste like. No matter how hard he wanted to
rush ths, to just have her in his arms, and bed already, he
would be patient. Unbuttoning his coat, he watched her, and
smiled, then sighed, and shook his head, holding up his hand.
"Leon, please... Like I was just telling Izekial. Mister Slater
makes me feel old and... stuffy." He explained, and gave her
another smile. Looking at his tie, he made a face and shrugged,
"Eh... to be honest, I do not really care for it. But moither
sent it, and if I don't wear it on occasion, somehow she will
find out... The woman is a witch, I swear." Looking up, he
smiled, his hazel eyes searching her bright blue ones. "Ah, look
at me... I start talking to a beautiful woman, and I get
distracted." He stated, then sat up straight. "I'm actually here
on business... for the most part, anyhow. You see, that gang
you've been chasing, I believe it is the McShaine Gang? Well
they have been hitting the couriers I use to carry the railroad
workers payroll." He explained, and sighed, "Well, I just
received a telegram today, it said my most recent courier was
held up. They took everything. So once again I am out several
hundred dollars." Seeing the look on her face, he shrugged,
don't worry, my men will be getting paid. There is a train
coming as we speak, I hired the Pinkertons to guard it.
Eightteen men, armed with Springfields, and winchesters should
be able to stop any band of robbers." He said with a slightly
       wicked smirk.
Standing up, he grabbed her coffee cup, and moved over to where
her coffee pot sat, and filled the cup,"With that, all out... I
have a question..." He stated, and acted like he was in dep
thought of hoiw to ask it, "Do you think... We could get
together sometime this week? I could have Zeke coko, the man is
an artist in the kitchen." He offered, then brought the cup to
Lakota and set it next to her hand.
Sitting back down, he tapped his forehead, and inhaled sharpy,
"Oh my. I have forgotten my manners!" He snip[ed and smiled,
"How was your night, Miss Skye?" He asked, and his smile seemed
to fade slightly, "I know you were on the trail late, and hoped
you were alright." He stated, then almost casually asked, "Did
you catch anyone you were after?"

"Where is my mind?" She giggled a little bit, nervously. "I
think it is instilled in me to call you Mr. Slater instead of
Leon." She let the blush overtake her cheeks again. Watching him
curiously, he was cool and collected as always. She couldn't
read him. He didn't have much of an emotional showdown like
Derek did. She could always read Derek. Leon, not so much.
Pressing her lips together, she continued to knot her knuckles
together as she leaned against her elbows on the table. It was
not ladylike to do so, but he needed to get used to her
un-ladylike-ness. After a moment, she leaned back into her
comfortable chair, finding some courage sunk into the leather as
she looked at him. She felt the power in the chair, and it
helped around this man. Asking him about his tie, she felt the
mistake come across her mind like a neon sign. It completely
kept blinking in her mind and she tried to keep herself from
shivering from knowing that it was a very big mistake if he
knew...He answered her by touching the tie and saying that it
was one that his mother had sent him. She nodded. "I have yet to
meet her and be witness to this witchiness." She giggled softly,
feeling that she could control the situation. He had no clue.
       Right?
Letting him get to the business part of his visit, she nodded
her head. Derek's last name came across the conversation and she
froze and completely sat still as he finished his words. Nodding
at the end of it, she was a little strung for words. "Uh--" She
paused for a moment, collecting her thoughts before she let a
cool smile over take her lips. "I was actually going to head
down to the Sheriff's office today and ask about their progress
with that. People are very worried about the Gang coming closer
and closer to town." She said softly. The head leader, Derek
McShaine was inside my house last night! She thought quietly to
herself, but her face showed none of the above. He promised to
see her tonight, and then maybe she would tell him about
Leon...Her eyes flashed with guilt for a moment as she thought
about what his reaction would be. Her shoulders tensed before
she listened to the rest of his words. "Well the Pinkertons are
very good at what they do." She said softly. "Hopefully nothing
comes of it and your package arrives safely." She said.
Hopefully no one gets shot! She looked Leon, noticing that he
now changed subject to seeing her sometime this week.
She didn't hesitate. "Of course." She said softly. This is my
life now... She whispered mentally to herself. "I can join you
for lunch today, if you would like?" She asked, looking at him.
Her eyes searched his, and everything seemed to be crumbling
down as he spoke of last night. The manners were far from what
she was thinking about. Hearing him apologize she shook her head
slightly. "Oh, don't worry--" She paused at his question of
seeing anyone after. She bit her lip for a moment. "An old
friend stopped by to see me before passing through town." She
giggled softly. "I about shot him in the head, and Duke about
tore him to shreds." She let another giggle escape her lips
before she looked at him. "But he was only passing through." She
repeated and stood from her chair, looking around them, seeing
the window open. She walked toward them and closed the shades.
As she did so, she let a soft smile come across her lips as she
asked her own question. "Were you checking up on me, Leon?" She
asked softly. She gulped, looking at the shades before turning
       to look at him.
"I mean I don't mind, but you do trust me do you not?" She
asked, walking closer to him to rest her fingers on his
shoulder, feeling the crisp fabric underneath her fingertips.
"Or are you just a jealous man of his soon to be wife?" She
giggled quietly, tilting her hip slightly as she leaned into the
       chair that he sat in.

Leon watched, and waited, staring at Lakota more like he would a
surveyors report, than a person. He was looking for flaws,
discrepancies, anything amiss that should put him on alert.
However he saw nothing, other than a moment of her scrambling
for her own thoughts. His smile stayed on, and he tilted his
head, "Oh no. By all means, let those useless outlaws try the
Pinkertons. I say that the sooner they are rid of, the better."
Pausing his eyes fell back to Lakota, "Ah, forgive, I know you
are paid for the arrests, of fugitives like that. But that was
the fifth courier they robbed, and I am growing quite sick f it,
truth be told." He admitted to her, and folded his hands in his
lap, as she went to the window. Even though he hated seeing her
dressed like some farmhand, he had to admit, she did have an
excellent figure. AS he stared at her, he felt a stirring in his
groin, and he had to look away. After all, they were promised,
it would be no time at all before he could take her to his bed.
Looking up at her when she turned back, he frowned, and shook
his head, "I am afraid lunch wont do. I have to go check the
progress on the line east of town. The swamp there is becoming a
real problem." He stated with an exhausted sigh. "The men dig,
and dig, and finally hit solid ground, we start building, then
the section of track they just laid sinks in." Rubbing his jaw
he shrugged, "However that route will be the quickest one back
to Georgia when it is complete." He stated, and smiled at her.
Tilting his head at the way she spoke about her friend, he
almost frowned at her, but didnt. That was another thing that
would have to be remedied, the way she spoke, and carried guns.
She wouldn't need any of that when they were married, though for
now, he would let her have her way.
Smiling, he shook his head, "No, not I. Zeke did... He knew I
had been worried about you, when we left the office. So, of his
own accord he went by your home to see if you were back, and if
you were alright, saw there was someone there, and decided to
let you have your privacy." He explained, and stared at the hand
that rested on his shoulder. Standing, he took it in his, and
kissesd it softly. "So we can't do lunch, and we should both get
back to work... How is dinner... on Thursday, sound?" He asked,
       with another charming smile.

"Many people are fed up with it." She said softly. Looking to
the side, she watched outside the window, her hair curling in
view of her face. She stayed there until she could get a hold of
the blush that had overcome her cheeks. She knew who was in
charge of it, but she couldn't speak of it to anyone. They would
find him. They would call him guilty and they would kill him.
She couldn't handle it. Finally gaining her composure she looked
at Leon who now looked at her curiously. She stood from her
chair, trying to control herself. She was emotional, but she
would see him and maybe she would be able to speak to him about
things. Maybe about getting him the hell out of here and perhaps
getting him to stop...She bit her lip. That was what she was
going to do. She smiled and pulled away from the shades after
closing them to look back at the man who she was now promised
to. Hearing his answer to her question of lunch, he turned her
down saying there was business to be taken care of. She let out
a sigh. Of course. He was a business man. She could expect that
this was going to be how her life in the future when married to
him...Perhaps in the other cities he would find a mistress like
the rest of the businessmen. She knew about this. Some had tried
       with her.
       She felt disgusting.
Looking toward Leon, she let out a small smile. "Yes. They might
need some direction in that case, yes?" She asked and a giggle,
a non emotional sound, passed through her lips. Coming closer to
him, she asked him of the reason why he knew, but then he told
her the information that Zeke had given him. She gave him a part
of the truth. Derek is an old friend. More like an old lover.
Her subconscious spoke to her and she mentally shook her head.
Continuing to look at him as he stood and pressed her fingers to
his lips to give them a soft kiss, she felt herself want to kiss
him. To see what kind of emotions she could evoke in this man.
She wondered if he had any other emotion other than business.
She held onto his hand, feeling someone else's touch other than
Derek's upon her skin. She looked up into his eyes, and she
hesitated. Releasing his fingers as he spoke that they couldn't
do lunch, but dinner on Thursday, she nodded. "I'll be there."
       She said softly.
Letting him start to head toward the door, she glanced at her
office, no longer feeling like a Marshall, or at least someone
who had control over their life. No. She felt like someone who
was searching for herself and was not sure which way to go. She
bit her lip before she glanced back at Leon. She would regret
this later, but-- "Leon." She called, reaching him before he
opened up the door. She walked closer and looked up at him.
"Kiss me." She said softly. Now, she watched him hesitating.
Would he kiss her? Or would he say no? Would he leave her
hanging without even an answer? She didn't know. There in the
moment, she felt her heart pounding in her throat..touching her
gag reflex slightly as it moved. She was nervous...

Leon paused at the door, and looked at Lakota, had he heard that
right? Staring at the woman he suddenly felt unsure, he wanted
this, right? He wanted her, to Kisss her and make love to her.
Staring into her light blue eyes, he gave an unsure smile and
moved to her. Setting his hand on her cheek, he leaned in and
kissed her. It wasn't what he wanted though, he realized after
the kiss. It had been light and gentle, devoid of emotion.
Pulling back he smiled, and then stepped back and turned and
       left, "Thursday..." He replied quietly.
Walking out of the Marshall's office, he looked up at the sun
and blinked, still unsure of the kiss. He had a confused look,
and walked to the railroad office. He just waved Zeke off and
mumbled, "It was her friend..." sitting at his desk, he rested
his head on the piles of papers, and reached into his desk
pulling out a bottle of scotch and pulling the cork out.
Taking a drink he inhaled an stood, then walked out of the
office. "Close up Zeke... We're going to go check that eastern
       spur."

Lakota had watched him. He still didn't react when she had
called for him. He didn't seem to like that she had told him to
wait. She had paused, probably thinking that nothing was to come
of it, and she was right. He came back to her, holding her cheek
as he looked into her eyes, but there was no emotion in it. He
didn't grasp her like he wanted to be in her arms. He only
leaned in and pressed a soft peck upon her lips. He seemed
restricted of motion. Emotion. He was not moving the way he
should have if he was in love with her. Her eyes fell to the
ground as he walked toward the door and said Thursday. "Yeah."
She turned away from him, walking back to her desk as much as he
walked out of her office not even looking at her. Her hands
turned into fists and anger washed over her, taking over her
limbs and without even a hesitant moment to think about what she
was going to do next, she lifted her palms and she cleaned off
her desk in one clean swoop. The papers went flying, her coffee
that he had gotten for her spilled over the cherry wood and
soaked some of the wall, leaving a terrible brown stain. Her
lamp broke as it fell to the ground and she could hear her
assistant immediately standing from her seat to come and check
       on her.
The moment that she opened the door, her mouth dropped and she
immediately stepped inside, closing the door behind her. "What
happened?!" She said a little surprised of the sudden outbreak
of anger that Lakota had. Lakota stood there, her hand bleeding
from catching onto the sharp edge of her wood frame. The blood
swelled and she looked at it before she glanced toward her
assistant. "Jane, please get someone to clean up my office. I am
heading toward the Sheriff's office to check on progress then
I'm heading for lunch." She said evenly as she picked up a
bandage from her drawer of her desk before she stepped around
the mess to reach the door, leaving her assistant to deal with
it. Everyone in the office looked at her, but she simply walked
by, wrapping her hand up before she exited the front door. Hail
was standing there, looking at her with flickering ears and
immediately reached up to sniff her hurt hand. "I'm alright
boy." She said softly, kissing his muzzle before she climbed up
on the saddle and began her ride to the next town where the
       sheriff's office were.
       Alone.

Derek looked at the blocked up tracks and smiled, amazing what
could be done in a half hour with picks, and a stick of
dyanamite. His gang stood arrayed around him, a dozen guys in
all, most a lot more cruel than Derek. However Derek was smart,
and had become a bit brutal. Having a tendency to beat the
others into submission with his bare hands. Something he had
refused to tell Lakota, he knew he was still on unstable ground
with her, and didnt want to upset that. She meant everything to
him, and he had to get her back. Hell he even missed their
stupid pointless arguments. To everyone else the had often
seemed unhappy, but to him they had been everything but. He
closed his eyes and saw her face the bright almost turqousie
blue eyes, the dark black hair, and he smile.
The sound of a train screeching to a halt, brought Derek back to
the now. Pulling the bandana that hung from his neck, up to
cover his face. Without even waiting for the train to stop
completely, he started climbing on. One other man was a step
ahead of him, as the moved through the train. Milo was about to
kick the door to the car open, when the familiar sound of a
shotgun firing, and shattering wood filled the air as te door
suddenly blew apart and milo was launched back. Derek jumped off
the train and grabbed Milo's hand pulling him off, but the boy
       was already dead.
Swearing Derek ducked and started running for his horse as
bullets flew from the train. Swinging up in the saddle he waved
his hand and whistled. The gang knew the drill, tuck and run.
Spinning their horses, Dsrek watched as another man dropped,
rolling back off the horse, as a dozen riders came baring down
on them. Derek was losing it now, wheeling his horse he shouted,
"Scatter!!! Meet up at the old church in the swamp on
Saturday!!!" then they all split apart.
As Derek looked over his shoulder he saw two riders peel off and
start after him. Cursing again, his hand strayed toward his hip
but he didn't draw as he rode. That bastard Everett would be the
only man he killed, he had sworn to Lakota, and he meant to keep
that true. Spurring his horse he rode hard for the mountains.

The train's horn was sounding. The winds were blowing past her
hair as she rode through the trails to reach the next down.
Following the bumpy trail, Hail sped like the wind, almost
catching the sun as it was fading into the sky. It wasn't dusk
and it wouldn't be for a couple of hours. She had enough time to
check on progress. Pressing her lips in a hard line, her mind
was occupied. She didn't know what came over her when she had
asked Leon to kiss her. Why had she done such a thing? She could
feel his lips upon her own and her stomach filled with
butterflies, but these were the light and playful ones, and so
much unlike the wasps that stung the inside of her belly when
she was against Derek. Leon had barely held onto her, barely
even touched her. She was actually giving him permission to
squeeze her, to finally break down that wall that hold her as
tightly as he could, but he wouldn't. He didn't embrace her, and
definitely didn't even try to touch her in any certain ways.
       Maybe she needed that...
       No. She had Derek.
She looked down at Hail as he rode farther. She could see the
town coming larger and larger as she rode closer. Many would
think her crazy to have fancy for two men, but only one was
true...Passion and hate was Derek. Conversation and trust was in
Leon. She didn't know which one she needed more. Her eyes lifted
to the town and people were watching her ride in. She slowed to
a gallop as she saw that the Sheriff's office was barren. She
lifted a brow and she shook her head. "They didn't send a
messenger!" She growled as she tore through the town, barely
missing other horses and carriages, but she knew what had
happened. There had been another robbery. She squeezed the reins
and moved faster through the crowds, and they parted until she
was outside of the town and heading for the railroad just a mile
or so away. She could hear gunshots and she was not aware where
Derek was. Was he robbing another train? She knew that it was
his gang. Was he okay? Panic filled her chest as she soared
through the trails, following the gunshots and yells. "Come on
Hail! We need to get there!" She screamed and the horse pushed
       on faster.
They didn't stop until she saw the group of deputies. They were
gathered, looking at the bodies that were now lined up. She
strode up, her hair blown back by the wind and Hail reared up
with a neigh before he settled himself down and she was finally
able to get off and examine. Her eyes searched over the bodies,
not seeing Derek's face among them. She looked toward the
Deputies, trying to look anything but pleased. "No messenger?
Nothing?" She yelled. They took a step back before one of them
began to part his lips. "This was a man's job, Marshall." He
said and soon he was being elbowed by the man next to him who
was weaker. She lifted her eyes to the man's eyes, walking
closer to him. "Would you like to join the men on the ground,
Mr. Gout?" She asked. "I am all for being the one to send the
letter to your wife and children giving them the notice that
their husband and father has been killed off for smarting up to
the Marshall." She said seriously. He only laughed into her face
and she lifted her good palm, running it across his face with a
loud slap upon his skin before she lifted her leg and planted
her wood soled boot into his stomach, causing him to stumble to
the ground in a fit of coughs. "I think you should rethink your
       actions, Mr. Gout."
"Anyone else want to belittle me with your words of this being a
man's job?" She asked. "I'm all for kicking ass. I'll do more
than that too. Once I have your asses on the ground next to Mr.
Gout's here, I will have your jobs moved down to the railroad
workers in the dirt, and have you replaced within the hour with
better suited men." She narrowed her eyes. Stepping back, she
looked at them. "Next time, you better fucking get a messenger
to me. Otherwise, this next time we meet shall not be so
pretty." She hissed before she turned her back to them and
climbed upon Hail, riding off back to her town, her office...
       Dusk was arriving...

Bullets wizzed by him, cracking against trees, and splintering
the wood. Derek was riding hard, trying to put ground between
him and his pursuers, and it was starting to work. They had
entered a bunch of trees, and the ground had became marshy,
Derek's big stallion was used to this terrain, but the
Pinkertons had to slow. They had also traded their pistols for
Winchester repeaters, allowing them longer range, as Derek
pulled away. It was odd, his life was on the line but all he
could think of was Lakota. She would be waiting for him, and he
wouldn't be there. The woman he needed would give up on him, and
it filled him with anger. Not at her, but at him, at the fact he
was never there. He was angry at being forced to this life, with
       the only escape being death.
Derek suddenly grinned, that was it, escape was death, looking
at the ground, he saw what he wanted. Looking over his shoulder
he couldn't see his pursuers, this was it. Raining in his horse,
he grabbed a tree branch, then started to climb, once he had
gotten high enough, he tossed his hat into the mud not far from
the stallion. It wasn't mud though it was quicksand, and if the
mercenaries acted like he hoped they would just turn around.
When the pair road up, an older man pointed and laughed, "Damn
fool went and rode into quicksand. Looks like our jobs done."
Yhe younger over the player smirked, such a shame, I wonder
which one be was." As they turned away, he heard, "Don't matter
now. We put a large dent in that gang, be a while before Mister
       Slater has another courier robbed.
Derek smiled and settled into a fork in the tree and looked to
where Thorn was standing a few yards away. The idiots hadn't
even looked for his horse, well at least he had his horse. The
smile quickly faded though and he but his lip, Lakota would
never forgive him, not now. He would have to hide for who knew
how long before he could visit her.

Lakota looked at the horizon. The sun was setting and she had
just arrived back at the office. Her office was cleaned again
and she nodded to her assistant who was now looking worried. She
waved her off and closed her door behind her for a moment as she
took in the anger that had taken over her earlier that day. The
ride had cleared her mind somewhat, but now she was about the
thoughts of tonight. She wouldn't have to think about the gang,
or even Leon. No. She was going to be able to think about Derek
and be in his arms, possibly talking to him, another part of her
screamed to be in his arms against his skin, feeling the passion
run over her until she released the tension from her body.
Taking in a deep breath, she leaned against her cleaned and
newly organized desk and let her head fall. She was alone at
that moment, and she surely felt horrible. What were these
thoughts that had come over her? Why was she angry that he
didn't kiss her the way he should have? She should be glad that
he didn't. It would give her even more of a progress to not fall
for the man. They could business partners, maybe.
She wasn't sure if she could handle his non emotion.
Taking in another breath, she straightened up and opened her
shades before grabbing her hat. "Apologize to my appointments
and tell them I'll be all theirs tomorrow morning." Her
assistant nodded her head and she walked out of the office yet
again. Hail looked worn and tired. "We can take our time getting
home." She said touching his nose as she came to give his muzzle
a light kiss. He snorted and made her giggle. "Oh, Hail. I love
you." She said softly and the horse nodded as if he knew or if
he was responding saying that he loved her as well. She stepped
to the side of him and climbed up on her saddle and kicked his
side and reared him back and they started a steady jog back to
home. It wouldn't take her long to get home even on a jogging
matter. She would be arriving perfectly. She wouldn't have to
wait too long until he was in her arms. Smiling to herself, she
leaned forward and whispered to Hail, "Race like the wind Hail"
and he took off just like she asked him too and soon they were
at the stables and she was putting him away. She was a little
giddy and her hands were shaking slightly. She fed the horses
and came in to find Duke half asleep. No one had arrived yet.
       Hours passed.
       Still nothing.
