       Outlawed Love
By: Dieterich Date: January 30, 2013, 10:38 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Looking at the house, Derek gave a wry grin, and slipped back
into the shadows. It had been nearly two months, two long
months, since he had been anywhere near here, and he knew it was
dangerous to return. Staring at the dark windows, he chewed his
lip and looked around, he could slip inside, easily, no one
would notice, not to mention, no one would be stupid enough to
break into that home. It belonged to a U.S. Marshall, for
specically, the one that was hunting him.
Chewing his lip again, Derek sighed, and looked to make sure the
coast was clear. Once he was sure no one was around, he sprinted
to the building, his spurs ringing softly as his long duster
rustled quietly. When he reached the door, he dug a key from his
pocket, slipped it into the key hole, and turned it. The outlaw
held his breath, waiting, he was actually scared, ‘click’ the
key turned completely, and he gently pushed the door open.
Closing it quickly and quietly, he locked it, and flipped the
key into the air, and chuckled.
Casting a glance around, he removed his hat and duster, and set
it on the coat and hat rack in the hallway. Striding into the
kitchen, he found a pot of water, and carried it to the
bathroom, as he closed the bathroom door, he lit a match and
fumbled around until he found a lamp, and lit that. Filling a
small bowl that sat in front of the mirror, he dug a razor out
of his pocket, and started shaving, cleaning up the usually
       well-trimmed goatee he had.
After he had finished, he put out the lamp, and walked to the
       main room, where he waited.

Lakota held onto the reins as she pulled in her horse. Night was
coming over the horizon and chasing the sun away. The sun was
fading back as if in retreat away from the night that
intimidated it. Looking to the east, she could see the darkness,
menacing as ever. To the west, the sun was still shining
brightly, but it would be gone in the hour. Stepping off her
horse, she hit the ground with the thud of her spurs and boots.
Today was harsh. There was still no leads upon the new man they
were chasing. He was to be heading this way, and she didn't want
him here. Far, far from here...Her eyes blinked as she ran her
fingers over the mane of Hail, her black stallion of a horse. He
leaned into her hand while nuzzling his muzzle against her
shoulder. "I know bud. We'll be chasing the dawn here soon." She
said with a smile before she pulled off the saddle. He seemed to
enjoy the released weight and he kicked his legs, stretching
them out before coming back to her. She nodded her head and
kissed his velvet muzzle before taking him back to the stables
in the back of the house.
Once he was in his stall, she took off his bridle and a new
batch of hay to chew on for the night before giving some of the
others some attention. She let out a soft sigh and pulled away
from the barn, closing it behind her. The night was silent
practically on the plains of the west. She could remember the
reason why she had come out here. After just receiving her
badge, she was ready to fight. She knew that she could have
stayed in the city where they would have paid more, but, she had
her roots in the country...deep in the sticks of New Orleans.
Most men did not think she would be able to hold her own around
this, and she should not be wearing pants like the rest of them,
but a dress caring for about six children and a husband who
bossed her around, but she would have none of it. Her flame
burned too bright to have that as a future. She was not going to
have it, and so she proved her parents wrong, and ran from the
city to get her badge despite what everyone told her. They
didn't like women being U.S. Marshalls. They barely even allowed
her, but she was the best shot out of them all. They had no
choice but to give her a gun and a badge. The towns loved her,
and men despised her here, but she didn't care...
Walking into the house, her boots leaving a thundering boom and
a small ting from the spurs with every step she took. She lit up
a lantern and set it on the table that she had had a friend
carve for her. The wooden frame was beautiful and wasn't rickety
like most, but sturdy and firm. She took off her hat and ran her
fingers through her wavy thick locks of raven hair. It was a
rough day. She needed to find the man that was there...He would
be around here somewhere. She leaned heavily against the table,
and took off her badge and unbuttoned her gun from her holster
and rested it on the table. She sighed heavily, before hearing
her old hound dog come in from the back, his claws clapping
against the floor as he came running in. "Hello Duke." She
leaned down and scratched behind his ears before she pulled away
to take off her boots, but Duke started growling. A deep throaty
growl was escaping his lips as he stood at the edge of the main
living room. It was dark, she couldn't see anything. "What's in
here boy?" She asked quietly, before she picked up the lantern,
       walking hesitantly into the room.

Looking at a picture on the mantle, Derek smiled and picked it
up. The couple in it looked so happy, and complete, even in the
grainy picture, their eyes held a fire that couldn't be denied.
As he set the picture down, he felt a tear run down his cheek,
as he turned away. Taking a deep breath he sat in a chair and
stared at the cold fireplace, he couldn't sit still, getting up
he moved to the fireplace, and laid the small pieces and tinder
that laid next to the hearth. Once that was done, he nodded,
satisified and moved back to the chair, waiting. "How far the
mighty fall..." He murmured to himself and hung his head. How
could it have happened, him becoming an outlaw, it had been self
defense. The man had shot him, and was going after the woman he
loved, so Derek shot him, six .45 caliber bullets in the mans
back. But of course it was some senators son, so no one would
listen to a teenage Irish boy, who claimed self defense. Sighing
he rubbed his neck and stared at the old table in front of him,
he wanted to return to his home, to have things like they should
be, but it would never happen again. Instead he was stuck in a
life he didn't want, he would admit that he was a hell of an
outlaw though. Mostly robbing payroll wagons, and trains, never
going after the banks that held people's own money.
Leaning back in his chair he felt his eyes start to close, he
started to doze, his head falling forward. In no time at all he
was asleep, dreaming of better days, days when he didn't have to
hide and sneak around. Days before he had to carry a gun just
because if he didn't people would try and lynch him on sight.
He awoke sometime later to a dog growling, and a woman's voice
filtering into the room. Standing up, he drew the Colt
Peacemaker from his hip, and moved to the side of the doorway.
Leveling the gun to head height. Hearing the woman say the dogs
name, he smiled, it was her. Swallowing he watched the woman
step into the room and cocked the hammer on his gun.
"Slowly, draw yer gun and toss it in the corner, Marshall." He
growled in a husky, dry voice. Once she did that he lowered the
gun and laughed. "Now that ya don't have a way of blowing meh
brains out... How 'qve ya been, beautiful?" He asked and
       holstered the weapon.

Just now having a rough day at work with no leads, she was now
standing in her house and Duke was growling. She sighed heavily
and reached for her gun when she asked for her gun, but she
hesitated when she walked farther into the main room. Her heart
raced in her chest for the hope that he was there but then she
hated him for being the one she had to chase. He had run off and
became an outlaw, one to make himself a very high reward...She
wondered what his parents thought of this. She hadn't seen them
for a couple of years. Letting her eyes glance toward Duke, she
saw a shadow move and she looked forward again. This was her
guy. He was around here, and having been seen earlier this
morning. That was why she had hell of a day. She growled along
with Duke as she spread her feet in a more demanding position
while she held her gun level with a head that was staring at
her. Then she realized that she was looking down the barrel of a
gun. He cocked in front of her and she gulped slightly, but
neither would she release her gun except for when he ordered her
       to with that husky voice.
"Shit." She cursed and did as he said before standing there with
her arms down at her sides. She was not sure how the man was
going to treat her, but then she realized something that was
familiar. His voice. Her breath hitched. When he finally spoke
in that non husky voice and finally came into the light with the
gun still point in her face, she could finally see those eyes as
well as hear his words by calling her beautiful. She narrowed
her eyes. "Derek McShaine. Outlaw." She said numbly. It was
him. It was really him. She watched him, feeling the anger come
over her body, touching each and every nerve. "You have some
nerve even thinking of coming around here!" Her eyes flared with
the anger running through her. Duke was still growling and he
stepped forward at the same time she did. "Are you stupid?
Stupid enough to think I would even help you?" She roared. "You
are lucky my gun is in the corner and my shot gun is in my
bedroom, otherwise you wouldn't have a head on your shoulders
and there would be a casket around your body!"
Duke barked and continued growling as he stepped in front of
her. Pointing down at him, Lakota looked at the man who had come
inside of her house unannounced. "Unholster your guns, all of
them from your body, right now." She ordered.

Looking down Duke he frowned, and tilted his head "Even mah
bloody dog hates me..." He groaned and then sighed and shook his
head. Looking back at Lakota he gave a sad smile. "Lakita
Skye... U.S. Marshall..." he replied and listene to her berate
him. Hanging his head he nodded, and finally looked up. His
green eyes were sad, and miserable, as he watched her. He hated
it, seeing her angry like this, but it was his fault. "I thought
it would be better if ya didnt know..." He explained to her, and
       swallowed.
When she demanded that he remove his weapons he did. Undoing his
gone belt he tossed the two Colts on the couch, then reached
down into his boot and pulled out a small Derringer pistol, and
added it to the pile. turning slowly he showed her he had no
other weapons and then stopped. He could see the anger,
frustration, and sadness in her eyes, and he wanted to cry. She
hated him now, it was his fault they were apart. "Darlin' can I
explain? Please?" He asked and slowly held out his hand to her.
He wanted to pull her into a hug, to hold her and not let go,
but he couldn't. Derek had a feeling she wouldn't let him, in
fact he was waiting, bracing for the slap that was to come. The
shouts, and cries, and hate towards him. Closing his eyes he
waited, hoping she would not be cruel.

"He hates you for the same reason I do." She narrowed her eyes
again at him. "You abandoned us. I took him in after the pound
was going to claim him." She growled. "I am the only one he can
rely on now. You left him without even a word!" She said with a
hiss. Her eyes couldn't look into his. Her bright blue eyes
seared through his and she wanted to rip him apart, but as much
as she wanted to, she couldn't. The Parish wanted him, alive and
well. Enough to tell them where something was at. Pressing her
lips together, he spoke of her name, and even he didn't say it
right. "Lakota, Derek. Lakota!" She sighed and walked toward the
table where he rested all of his weapons. She took them into her
arms and carried them to the safe, and after unlocking it, she
tossed the weapons in there before closing it and making sure it
was locked with more than just one lock. Standing again, she
looked at him. Duke still stood in front of him, his growling
having ended. When she glanced at Duke, she barely looked up at
Derek, hearing his words of wanting to explain.
She lifted her hand. "Do not, and I mean do not, call me
darling. You could do that years ago when you actually cared
about the people around you." She crossed her arms over her
chest. "Now, you can't say any of that shit to me anymore." She
stared harshly at him. His pleas made her heart race even more
until it was aching to quit. She had rehearsed the moment she
would see him again if she ever did over and over again in her
mind. And now that she was actually looking at the man in front
of her, she was at loss for words for a moment. Staring at him,
seeing the angle of his freshly shaven jaw, she could smell her
soap on him even over Duke's odor. She had to bite on to her
cheek to make sure that she didn't start blushing. She began to
focus on the pain instead of thinking about him and her years
       ago...when they were in love...
Tired of looking at him, and tired of feeling the ache in her
chest because she couldn't take hold of her instincts and
finally feel his skin underneath her fingertips, she looked down
at Duke. "Sick 'em." She said simply and Duke attacked, jumping
on him and bringing him down with his large paws. Being a
mastive, he was going to take Derek down with one shot for most.
Standing on top of him with all of his body weight on him, which
was close to 200 pounds, he growled in Derek's face. "I am
holding him back by one word from him ripping off your face."
She looked at her nails before she reached for the cuffs that
she had in one of her drawers. "Duke, do not move." She said
softly and the dog stayed in place as she looked down at Derek.
'Now if you don't mind, give me one of your wrists, Derek.
Slowly, otherwise, Duke will bite it off."

His jaw clenched tightly, and his hands curled into fists, aas
she spoke, he had never told her the full story, why he had
killed that senators son. When she shoved past him he caught the
smell of her perfume, mixed with sweat, and the smell of horses.
She smelled like home, like he should be holding her, and
helping her around the house. Instead he had been running from
her, from the law, from his family, it wouldn't hurt as much, if
she wouldn't keep saying it was because he no longer loved her.
That was the farthest thing from his mind, as stood there,
looking into the safe, he saw it sitting there, the small box,
holding the item he had purchased that fateful night.
"'Ey, you mick!" The voice rangout, drunken and slurred. Derek
turned, "What ya want, Everett?" The man, he wasn't a man, he
was a boy, same age as Derek. "What you think I want, mick. I
want that pretty little girly you been seein'" Everett paused,
and shoved direct, "'Cept one problem. I been tryin' to talk to
her, all proper like, but she said, she don't want none of my
comp'ny!" Another push. "Evertt, yer drunk, why don' ye just go
home." Derek sighed, taking a step back. "Oh ho! The mick thinks
he can bosshis better aroun'. Well 'ow's this, for bossin'."
Everett's fist shot out, and caught Derek on the cheek, knocking
him to the ground, "Best learn your place mick!" He shouted, and
he kicked him in the stomach. Derek gasped, gulping for air,
only to receive another kick, and have Everett's face suddenly
next to his. "Now, what I'm gonna do. Is shoot ya, in the heart,
and then go and consul that pretty little friend of yours.... If
ya understand me." Everett laughed, as he grabbed his crotch,
and stood, then drew his gun. Derek started to crawl away, but
thunder cracked, and a bullet went through his back.
That was when he turned, and saw Everett, walking away, laughing
and making jokes with his friends about what he was going to do
to Lakota. Derek saw red, and his pain left him, clawing to his
feet, Derek drew the Colt his father had purchased for him, and
fired, six times, all the rounds blowing through Everetts back.
"I won't let ya touch her, ya bastard!" He cried, before
       collapsing.
Derek looked up, and went to move, but too late, Duke slammed
into him, and he fell to the ground, staring up into the face of
the snarling mastiff. "Lakota... I never..." He stopped as Duke
barked in his face, and growled. He could grab his knife, and
stab it into Duke's heart, but he had raised the dog from a pup,
and he would be unable to even attempt. Looking towards the girl
he loved, his expression darkened as she grabbed his wrist, and
cuffed him. "They'll kill me..." He whispered, as she hauled him
up, and cuffed the other wrist.
"Lakota. Darlin' they will kill meh." He stated again, searching
her burning blue eyes. They wouldn't waist a trial, they would
march him to the Senators house, the man would get a gun, and
shoot Derek in the head. Stepping closer, he shook his head,
"Laota.... Have you ever looked in that box, that I put in the
safe? Did you ever see what was inside?" He could feel himself
       starting to get angry.
"In fact! Did you even, ever bother to ask me what 'appened that
night? Why I shot Everett Malone, six times in the back? Why the
sheriff wouldn't let ya see me, while I was locked up!?!?" He
was shouting now. "NO! Ya took their side, sayin' that I hated
Everett, and always 'ave. Ya said that when I get riled, I don
always think properly!" Shaking his head, his rolled his eyes
and shrugged, "Shite! Maybe I should 'ave never come back! Maybe
I should have just left you, and Duke, and my parents, and rode
away, ne'er to be seeen again!" His face was turning red, "Would
that 'ave made ya 'appier? Huh? Then ya could go and find
ya'self a proper man. Not some Irish screw up like me! Oh, aye,
then ya dear ole daddy would be so 'appy!"

Lakota was busy gathering his wrists to clamp down for the
chains to surround his skin and bones. She was too busy to
listen to his chatter, not wanting him to burst through her
built up wall, but as she caught words, she finally paid
attention to what he was saying. Her eyes looked into his and
she saw the anger flash in them. "Of course they will kill you!"
Her eyes darkened in response. "You brought it upon yourself."
She clamped down and locked his wrist to keep closed before she
pulled away from him and ordered Duke off of him. When she did,
she set the keys back on her ring and washed her hands off
because of the dirt and grime that the chains produced and put
on her fingers. Taking in a breath, she was still paying
attention, but her face was without emotion. He would do
anything to get out of those chains. She knew that she would if
she was in his predicament. When he brought up the words about
the box that she kept in the safe, she stiffened. "Of course I
didn't look at it!" She roared. "I was angry at you for not
showing up that night!" She met his hard gaze.
"I didn't assume nothin'!" She glared at him. "I couldn't see
you shootin' anyone in that town. So many years ago." Her eyes
flashed the brightest blue when she spoke of their love. They
always had glowed when she spoke of him, but now they were
darkening as she spoke. "When I heard you shot Everett, I
couldn't believe it. I was thinkin' you've been framed! I've
been trying to prove it all wrong, but it was without a doubt
you!" She glared at him. "You were holding the fucking gun and
laid in the street with a bullet in your back. A single bullet.
Everett had six!" She said, tears forming in her eyes. "My
father wouldn't let me leave, Derek, and the times I actually
got out, the Sheriff was at the door each time, it's like they
were watching me, and knowing that I would come to see you! I
wanted to talk to you. I tried for months, and then when you
were finally released, or broke out, or whatever, you didn't
come and find me!" She narrowed her eyes. "You didn't even try
to find me. Didn't message me, nothin'. It was like you never
even existed. No one spoke of your name. It was as if it was
forbidden, and you know what they did to me? They tortured me
with their words. Pitying me with their looks!" She shook her
head, slamming down her fists, causing Duke to come to her side
and lean against her with a sad look in his eyes.
"I even tried to go and see your parents, wondering if they had
even heard from you, but they didn't. I took Duke, and I left,
Derek. You left me to deal with the pain years after. I came
here, and put my anger towards you to good use. I got my badge
and am very respected here!" She narrowed her eyes. "No one
looks at me like they did back at home. I no longer am pitied or
often talked to for a 'shoulder to cry on'. They actually look
       at me!"
She paused for a moment, running her fingers over Duke's ears
and looking down at him for a moment before she glanced at the
man who tore her heart into pieces. "Now, you come back and
expect me to embrace you with the same love that I did back
then?" She spoke softly. "No, that isn't going to happen
anymore. I am no longer a naive, stupid little girl that
followed you around everywhere. I can finally take a stand for
myself and have a say!" Her soft and whispered voice soon turned
into a strong and clenching growl, but then she straightened and
spoke with manner. "But now, since I have you. An outlaw of
about 50 grand, I will be honored and become the first woman to
have captured an outlaw in New Orleans!"

Derek laughed bitterly, and shook his head, she stille hadn't
asked him. It was like she wanted him to be guility, had she
changed that much. She had to know he was innocent, that he had
shot Everett in cold blood. hearing how much he was worth, he
finally snapped. "Lakota! Shut up and let me speak!" He shouted,
his voice angry, but his eyes sad. This would e the hardest
part, telling exactly what happened, to the person that probably
       hated him the most.
Swallowing, he sat on the arm of the chair, his arms still
behind his back. "Furst off, ya need ta look at what is in the
box in the safe." He whispered and stared at her, "Please... If
you ever loved me, look." He pleaded, and swallowed again. That
box held every penny he had made while working for her father.
All of it for a simple gold band.
Once she had removed it from the safe he sighed and stood, "The
truth of what happened that night is what I told you. Self
defense, he attacked me when I was leaving the jewelers shop...
I purchased a ring, for you... I loved you, still do, there are
nights I cry myself to sleep for leaving you alone, but I had no
choice." He watched her face as she stared at the box in her
       hands.
"I was leaving the jeweler, the ring in my pocket, and Everett
showed up, insultin' me, and talkin' about you. He attacked me
then, punching me and kicking me when I was on the ground. He
said he was going to kill me..." His voice broke, "I was
terrified... Jesus I was terrified Lakota, like I never had been
before. Then he drew his gun, and said after I was dead, he was
going to pay you a visit, he grabbed his crotch when he said it.
I started crawling away, thankfully he was drunk, and his aim
off when he shot, or I would be dead. He started walking away,
and said he was going to your home... I managed to get up... I
just started shooting until my gun emptied, and I blacked
       out..."
He looked up at Lakota again, letting her see his tears. "I was
       so scared... So so scared..."

"It's not often that the US Marshall is quieted." She mused,
looking at him with her narrowed eyes. Watching him sit down
against the arm of her chair, she crossed her arms over her
chest, debating if she should just take him to the station now
and finally get the satisfaction of knowing that he is getting
payback for leaving her. Biting her lip, she watched him until
he ordered her to get the box out of the safe. She looked at him
cautiously before she went to the safe, knelt down and opened it
before pulling out the velvet case that she thought was
something that she had always wished for. She dreamed about it,
but she could not look at it. She only hid it from herself by
making sure that it was not taken from her, but then she
wouldn't look at it as it sat there in the safe for so many
years. Finally opening the box, she saw the simple gold ring and
her mouth fell open. She clasped her fingers over her mouth and
looked at him before back at the band. "You were going to ask me
to marry you?" She asked quietly, through a clasped hand.
She couldn't stop looking at it. She was holding something very
expensive and he had bought it for her in order to ask her to
marry him, but the night that the whole situation came down, he
was shot in the back and he killed someone else causing him to
be taken away and put in jail. She could see the tears in his
eyes as he spoke of his fear. She bit her lip as she removed her
eyes from the ring and she slowly closed the box. She couldn't
look at it anymore. Setting it down, she wrapped her arms around
herself and looked down at Duke was looking back at Derek with
sad eyes as if he was beginning to know who Derek was. He was
wagging his tail looking at Lakota before she pointed toward
Derek and Duke came over to him, licking his knee. "It seems
that Duke knows who you are now." She said through clenched
teeth. Her eyes stayed on Duke. She couldn't look at Derek. She
felt humiliated. If people found out that the outlaw was going
to ask her to marry him, the whole town would go berserk,
putting more and more rumors of the justice system being
corrupted. She looked down and turned her head to the side until
she found her heart in her throat. It was beating fast and it
was screaming for her to move forward.
Her mind screamed that she stay away and reason what this man
had done to her, but she couldn't find herself to stay away. She
bit her lip before she walked closer to go and pick up her gun
from the corner. She set it down on the table and glanced down
at Duke before back at the box on the counter. She took in a
deep breath until she came closer to him. Her keys clanged
together as she walked and her boot's spurs also made deep
sounds as she walked to stand in front of him. She grasped his
face and before her mind could make her think about this, she
leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. She felt the
passion that she always felt for the man come back over her in
waves, over and over again as she kissed him deeper, running her
fingers into his hair, pushing the hat that he wore off his
head. With his hands in the front because he was on the ground
on his back when she chained his hands, she didn't even think
about the keys were close to his hands. She could indulge with
his hands bound, couldn't she? She finally pulled away and
stepped away. "I don't know what came over me." She whispered
