       Thunk!
Kara awoke to a pillow being lobbed at her from across the room
by her older cousin Ayra. "Wake up, sleepy head! Time for
lessons!" Whipping open the curtains of the room the two girls
shared, Ayra smiled at the sight of snowflakes falling from the
sky. Swooping down over Kara's bed, she pinched the 13
year-old's cheeks and smushed her face while cooing, "Come on,
sweet pea, wake up. It's gorgeous outside, and Gram promised to
bake us apple crisp if we do well at lessons today.
Kara's bright blue eyes, which always had a flicker of light to
them when the light caught them just so, fluttered open at the
mention of apple crisp. Nothing spelled winter like the taste of
warm apples covered in cinnamon and sugar covered in a crust
that melts in your mouth. "Alright, Alright. I'm up!" Kara
       chortled.
Ayra helped her dress and both girls whizzed out of the room
that their mothers' had shared when they were girls. Flying
around the banister to the stairs, one blur of wild hair after
another, both girls nearly knocked Tala, who was carrying a
rather large pile of laundry, completely over. Dropping the
laundry to catch her balance, Tala laughed softly, "Those too
are more like Phoebe and I at those ages more and more each
       day."
As the teenage girls darted down the stairs and through the
kitchen headed towards the backdoor for the greenhouse where
they were supposed to have their lessons today, they heard a
shout. "Hey, hey, hey now, girls! Slow down for a second. Gram
left you both a muffin for breakfast, and don't I get kisses
from my favorite daughter and my favorite niece?" Phoebe called
out, sounding more mother-like now than she had ever had before
       taking sanctuary with the Coven.
"But I'm you're only daughter," Kara sassed while grabbing for a
muffin and placing a kiss on her mother's cheek.
"And I'm you're only niece," Ayra echoed and followed Kara's
       actions.
Phoebe giggled and shooed them both out the door. "You better
behave for Bryndis today. Gram may have a soft spot for you two,
but she surely won't expect any less from you either!

Both girls rushed out the door with mouths full of muffin across
the wind-whipped, snowy yard to the greenhouse where Bryndis
awaited them to start their lesson for the day. The humid warmth
of the greenhouse was a stark difference to the bitter chill of
the winter air outside. Both girls tossed off their fur and
cloaks onto a chair. Across the room Bryndis was working on
       plucking some bay leaves.
"Bay leaf," Bryndis pointed at Ayra.
Ayra thought for a moment and then answered, "Used for
protection against curses and hexes or in teas to increase
       clairvoyance or divination."
"Very good!" Bryndis praised. "Kara... which element dominates
       the bay leaf?"
"F-fire," Kara knew the answer, yet she stuttered over the word.
Her face had suddenly turned very pale. Her stomach grumbled
even though she had eaten the entirety of her muffin. Growing
faint, she stumbled a little and caught herself on the counter
between the two girls and Bryndis.
Ayra saw her cousin tremble and reached out to grab her by the
elbow and steady her. "You alright, Kara? You feel clammy."
"Sit down for a minute, dear. Ayra's right. You don't look
       well," Bryndis agreed.
The scent of blood caught Ayra's nose. Being half werewolf had
it's benefits. Quickly glancing over Kara, Ayra noticed that the
girl's gauzey fabric skirt was flushed with blood. "Oh,
sweetheart, that explains it. You've gotten your first
mondablot. That's all." Ayra used the old english term as most
of the coven did. Although she spent most of her life outside of
the coven, she felt it was a more polite way of saying it.
Suddenly, Bryndis's face turned as sheet white as Kara's.
"Ayra.. dear.. run and fetch your mother." But before Ayra could
so much as gather her furs, Kara had taken to a sprint out of
the greenhouse and into the not so far off forest that
       surrounded the coven.
Bryndis gathered her skirts and ran to the house shouting for
Phoebe and Tala, "It's happened," she said in a hushed voice.
"What's going on?" Ayra questioned from behind Bryndis looking
       worried and confused.
Phoebe whispered a plea to the Goddess under her breath, and
Tala remained calm as always. She instructed Ayra to her room,
Bryndis to fetch her mother, and then took her own leave to find
       Gran.

In the early hours of the morning, eyes dull and drooping,
Tala's head nodded from sleep to wake to sleep as she slowly
brushed her younger sister's hair with her fingers. Phoebe had
finally managed to slip from tears to sleep with her head in
Tala's lap and her fingers white-knuckle gripping the fabric of
Tala's skirt. Tala had spent the entire night soothing Phoebe's
       fears and doubts.
       "She'll come back to us."
       "The binding spell will hold."
       "Everything will be alright."
She repeated the empty promises over and over, never believing
them, but knowing that they were the only hope Phoebe had to
cling to. Although Phoebe had eventually slipped into a dream
where she could hold Kara in her arms and everything was
alright, Tala had continued to sit upright all night, stroking
her sister's hair, and fearing for what the morning would bring.
It had been three nights since Kara had disappeared. In those
three nights, the snow had melted from the ground, and the
temperature had begun to turn from winter to spring. And all of
the Blackbird women had hardly gotten any sleep.
It was then that they heard the shriek. Phoebe bolted upright,
and Tala's hand flew to her sister's shoulder to keep her from
running out alone. Grabbing both of their shawls from the chair,
Tala handed one to Phoebe and wrapped the other around her
shoulders before following her sister down the hall and the
stairs, outside, and to where Gram, Aunt Blaise, and a small
crowd had gathered around the well. There a woman shrieked in
pain as she clutched the lifeless body of a gangly young teenage
boy to her. Aunt Blaise grasped her by the shoulders and
whispered comforts into her ear as she pulled her away from the
boy. Gram stooped down to take a closer look and grimly stated,
"The boy appears to have been frightened to death."

Clustered around the council table, the Blackbird women
whispered in quick hushed voices. Outside, the young Ayra
comforted her distraught and sobbing Aunt Phoebe. Inside,
neither Tala nor any of the council members (Gram, Blaise, and
Bryndis) dared speak loud enough for Phoebe to catch their words
       on the air.
"The iron... we have no other choice," Blaise insisted.
"I've seen Morrigan control her cravings. It's not impossible
for Kara to learn so in time. The iron may injure not just her
body... and we would have to find her first." Tala breathed.
"Can we truly risk the lives though?" Bryndis questioned Tala.
"Can we really risk fracturing Kara's mind?" Tala quipped.
All three women looked to Gram, who had been sitting with her
hands crossed stoically below her chin, eyes closed, absorbing
the situation. A few moments of silence, more than was
comfortable, passed before Gram finally spoke, "Tala is right.
We cannot risk fracturing Kara. Bryndis is right. We cannot risk
the lives. If her powers have advanced enough to kill in only
three days, I fear not even all of our powers combined are
enough to track her and contain her. We need..... a mother's
       touch."
"But, you've seen Phoebe. You can't possible expect her to be in
any condition to find the girl." Blaise condescended.
A shorter, but even more uncomfortable pause passed until Gram
said, "...the girl has another mother."

The woods were cold and damp. Tala pulled her shawl tighter
around her slim shoulders trying to stave off the goose-bumps
that pricked her arms. The summoning of certain creatures was
strictly prohibited within the coven. So Tala had elected to
perform the ritual herself outside of the property controlled by
the coven. Trying to keep her teeth from chattering too loudly,
she sat, pulling her legs beneath her, and began to pull
ingredients from the basket beside her one by one.
A summoning was no easy feat, let alone the summoning of such a
powerful being. It would surely leave Tala bedridden for at
least a day afterwards. Collecting her thoughts, she closed her
eyes and reached for each carefully placed ingredient placing
them each into the cauldron before her. Only did she open her
eyes once she was prepared to write a single name on a piece of
paper, before setting it aflame, tossing it amongst the
ingredients in the cauldron, and squinting as the flames burst
       high.
       The paper read: "Morrigan."

The flames burned bright and high; particles oh ash and flares
of flame even reached the mid-length of the tall trees that
surrounded the witch. They burned for a few minutes before the
flames roared and began to burn a purple hue; settling down to
an even five foot high, which was still high for the fire that
was created originally. A foot, clad in black sandals that laced
up to her thigh, which was covered by a violet mini dress
stepped out of the flames. Once the woman's whole body emerged,
the flames dwindled down to be only small enough for a child's
campfire. Green eyes; laced with power dove deeply into the eyes
of the one who summoned her. To Morrigan's surprise, it wasn't
Phoebe, who didn't need to go through all of this rigamarole in
order to summon the succubus. Before speaking, those same eyes
glanced around the area, drinking in the scenery; she was right
outside of the coven. This just HAD to be good.
With the last time she saw her beloved, Morrigan's hunger was
quelled for the moment; they had a very long night of vigorous
feeding in which the Green Haired Succubus fed to her heart's
content. So now, instead of hunger, it was curiosity that drove
her."Hmpf.." She started, shuffling to the side of Tala while
her arms folded in front of her. "This is rare... I never
expected it'll be you who summons me. And, just outside of your
coven too.. I'm curious, what is it that you need little ole' me
for?" Morrigan laughed then shook her head; lime green strands
finding her face and covering her right eye. "But first. I need
to know how Phoebe's holding up and why it is you and not
       her..."

Standing up and dusting the dirt and fallen leaves from her
skirt, Tala pursed her lips and bit the inside of her cheek
attempting to quell the foul words that had first risen to mind.
Morrigan was far from her favorite person, having seduced her
younger sister and whirling her out from under the coven and
Tala's guiding hands. She'd been the reason Phoebe was
excommunicated, but Tala could not deny that Morrigan had always
treated Phoebe well and protected her when Tala couldn't be
       there to.
"You know full well that they are not my coven... I left when
Phoebe... well..." She choked down her words, not wanting to
rehash the past which Morrigan already knew. Shivering, whether
at the chill in the air or the bad memories, Tala readjusted her
shall tighter around her shoulders. This was probably the last
thing Tala wanted to be doing. In fact, she could name at least
three other things she'd rather be doing.
Tala readjusted her shall tighter again and sighed deeply, not
knowing how to phrase the message she had for Morrigan.
"Phoebe.. well... she's not in the best of ways right now. The
reason for which is actually why I called you here to speak.
Its... its Kara. The bind Gram placed on her powers as a toddler
has broken. We knew this day would come, but her reaction
       couldn't have been predicted. She's run off...and there's
already one young boy been found dead.
We.. well.. we need your help."

Succubi are creatures who are rarely known for emotional
connections; heartless demons of lust and seduction. But her
servant, Phoebe, had captured something within the heart of this
woman, breaking the ice that surrounded the heart of Morrigan.
They had this mutual emotional connection but was forced to hide
it due to their 'relationship'. It was odd; they would allow
Phoebe to be a servant of a demon race that they hated, but
would come with pitchforks and torches if they were involved
more than that. Sighing to herself, Morrigan slowly circled
Tala; someone else who wasn't her favorite person. One of the
prime architects constructing a barrier between the Succubi
       queen and her family.
The new news about Tala's defection was startling. Though, as
she finished her circling of the witch, she shrugged. Dark green
hair waved strands over her youthful pale face, green eyes
gleaming into the sister of her lover's own; a dangerous and
powerful set of orbs. "Excuse my ignorance. I must have
forgotten in the time away..." She said with a tone of acid
emitting from her lips. A deep breath filled her lungs; the
warmth from the dwindling flame filling her cool body. The
embers surrounded her like fireflies caught in her charm. "I'm
not too fond of you witches, like you aren't too fond of my
kind. So, this. . . . Meeting holds particular interest to me. I
only heed your call because of you protecting my family. But
thinking they need protection from ME is uncaused for! I encase
myself in stone to prevent my hunger from getting out of
control, to do with very little succubi do; remain loyal!" She
spat vigorously. "I treat her like a queen. I'm loyal and remain
so. To only feed from her. Do you understand how hard it is?! To
       not see your family?! To not see your lover?!" She scolded Tala;
though her rage could have very well been misplaced.
She took a deep breath as Tala began to speak once more. Her
heart sank at the news about Phoebe, though that was misplaced
with a sense of pride about Kara. She had broken the seal of a
grand witch; at such a young age! She couldn't help but smile at
this fact, also at the fact that she KNEW that one day, they'll
need her. "Haha.." She couldn't help but laugh..."You. This. .
Coven. . Needs ME?! MY HELP?! HA! Oh how the mighty have fallen!
I can't help but find this amusing.." After soaking the
situation in, Morrigan's demeanor changed to that of a serious
attitude. "First off, we need to find her. If she has fed for
the first time, this late in her youth, she's bound to binge
feed. Especially with Lillith's influence guiding her. I could
find her, but first!" She paused with a tilted head. "I want to
       see Phoebe..."

For Phoebe's sake, Tala had tried to refrain from letting her
temper rise, but Morrigan had managed to push one to many
buttons. "It was never my thoughts that Phoebe or your child
would need protection from you. Know this and remember it. I may
not be fond of you for enticing my younger sister away from the
comforts of her family, but I left the coven when they shunned
her. My dislike for you has nothing to do with your nature, only
your seduction of my sister, and, besides, the past is in the
past. My thoughts now are only for Phoebe and her happiness and
safety. I never would have brought her back to the coven if I
didn't think it was the best choice for both of our families."
Tala could feel her heart warble in her chest as Morrigan asked
if she knew how hard it was to not be able to see a lover. "I
know more than you would think of the exquisite pain of a decade
passing without seeing a lover. At least you have the comfort
that she is alive and safe."
Choking down the tears she could feel welling in her eyes at the
fear she may never again see the man she had grown to love, Tala
pinched her eyes shut and shook her head. "I will take you to
see her, but be warned that many of the coven are not happy with
the decision we made to allow your entrance.
