He chuckled lightly at her question most new elders dont ask his
name until they are finished with their training she was the
first to begin questioning before her training, his name was
actually a rather complicated name and many others wondered what
his name stood for since technically it is nothing more than an
acronym. He looked up into the womans green eyes and a small
chuckle left his lips, before turning back to the fire. He
curled his hand amongst the flames dancing it in and out of each
of the smoldering embers, his eyes remained among the dancing
flames thinking back to his childhood, before finally parting
       his lips.
"Just call me JD like the rest of the Elders Echo my name is
much longer and much more meaningful but you wouldnt under stand
it until you finish your training."
He continued watching the fire his eyes finally closing and his
body raising quickly before turning to look at the girl, his
golden eyes staring down at her form, his eyes trailing up and
down her and then to the cave that surrounded them before once
again falling back on her. He asked every elder before her, the
same question and even to this day none of them had ever guessed
the question right and to this day the answer always remained
the same. He stepped back and folded his arms over his chest a
small smirk coming to his lips revealing the fangs that hid in
       his mouth.
"Tell me Echo how old do you think I am? you have heard the
stories how old do you think I am?"
He awaited the girls answer actually interested on how old she
thought he was, he though was not much older than the girl
herself guessing her age was about seventeen or eighteen, he
himself was nineteen in a technical sense though in dragon years
he had been around for centuries and had even danced amongst the
most ancient of creatures. His eyes closed back down and thought
back to the centuries of creatures he knew and most of the
friends and families he had as a whole.

Echo found a sense of relief in learning his name, even if it
was not his true name. She needed something call him by. A name
was always the first thing she sought to learn about a person.
It was their identity, their calling card. It was needed in so
many ways and held so much meaning. A name was more than just a
word, so it meant something to her to be able to know it. A
smile curved along her lips, and she nodded.
"JD it is then. Thank you."
She turned her eyes to him when he stood, seeing that he was
almost two feet taller than her. She had to look up at him to
keep his gaze. His question caught her off guard, but she didn't
think it to be random. If he was asking her this, it had to be
for a reason. She looked away from his eyes and thought about it
for a moment, remembering all of the stories she had been told.
Her bottom lip rested between her teeth as it did when she
thought on something. She wasn't quite sure how to answer, so
she said what she thought to be true.
"From the things I have heard, it would seem that the protector
has been around since the dawn of time. That you have always
been, for millions of years as it were." Her eyes turned to him,
gazing along his well toned body. "Though you do not appear to
sustain much age. You look young, not much older than me." Her
eyes came to meet his, and she smiled softly. "But your eyes,
they are old. You have seen so much. Even if your body is not
old, your soul is impossibly aged. I can only imagine how long
       you have existed."
She hoped her answer was satisfactory to him, as she could not
think to put it any other way. Her fingertips brushed against
her amulet as she looked around at their surroundings for the
first time. She had not a clue where they were, but they seemed
incredibly alone. Though she did not feel uncomfortable being
alone with him. She felt oddly safe.

The answer kinda surprised JD a bit she guessed his age without
actually giving a number, if she had said nineteen he would have
accepted it but this woman went much deeper and actually gave no
age. He chuckled softly before taking a step close to her, his
lips met lightly with the top of her forehead, he stepped back
as the effect took place upon her body, curling around the back
of her neck was the sign of a serpent like dragon that curled
around the whole of her neck and slither down her chest
slightly. He stepped back and admired the tattoo for a second
       before speaking his words lightly.
"For giving a satisfactory answer for my age you have been
gifted with something none of the other elders I trained have,
the ability to call to me. If you ever need my help for anything
just simply whisper my name and I shall be there. JD. Thats it
       and I shall hear."
He quickly returned to the ground staring back at the flames his
eyes closing once again, the encampment had many things for the
two of them two tents, two sleeping bags and all, but JD wouldnt
sleep he was sure, many things call at night and it was he who
had to make sure the woman was safe, he moved his hand over the
flame, almost in an instant it shot to the top of the rock of
the cave before falling back down to a small blaze, he turned
towards the girl Echo once again and chuckled speaking lightly.
"By the way since you're rather curious you're welcome to ask
any question you see fit, I will answer anything and everything"

Echo looked up at him, and she did not move as he closed the
distance between them and place a delicate kiss to her forehead.
A soft tingling sensation like warm water rushing over her skin
moved over the back of her neck and down onto her chest. Looking
down, she saw the serpent marking and brushed her fingertips
across it. She could not feel it, as if it were a part of her.
She couldn't help but smile and admire it as he explained to her
what it was for, and that she was the first to claim it. She
wondered why the others before her had not been gifted with such
a prize. Were there answers not to his liking? She pondered this
for a moment, but finally dismissed it just as the flames
       flashed before her eyes.
With a soft sigh, she moved to sit down, keeping herself close
to the fire. The dress she wore had a thin strap over only her
left shoulder, the top circling around beneath her arms. It came
to the middle of her thighs. She was not uncomfortable, but for
some reason the warmth of the flames called to her, so she sat
rather close, pulling her knees to her chest. Her eyes moved to
JD as he told her that she was welcome to ask any questions she
wished to. That was a large request, because her curiosity would
get the better of her. Though there was some things she wanted
       to know.
"Why me?" She asked softly, looking at him and trying not to
avert her gaze. "Why do my people need an elder at all when they
have you to look out for them? You are our protector, and I feel
safe around you. Should that not be enough?"
Her eyes returned to the flames and she reached a hand out
toward them, her fingertips hovering only an inch above where
they danced. The heat was incredible, and the light reflecting
in her eyes, making them shine. She probably could have chosen a
better question, but it had been weighing on her mind since the
revelation that all of this, that he was real. She needed to
       know.

Her question didnt surprise him a bit, all of the elders had
questioned the same thing when they were away from home and yet
none of them had expected the answer they had been given, JD
stood and raised his hand over the flame and for the second time
tonight it danced into the air becoming different shapes and
sizes coming to rest on the figure of a dragon and a man, the
man was rather young speaking to the full grown dragon that
rested on the ground next to him, their conversation was
inaudible but simply proved one thing. He waved his hand over
the flame once again and it faded back down to its normal size,
his lips parted and for once his voice seemed lost as he spoke.
"If there was another way than to continue to take children away
after every few years to train them into Eldership I would have
chosen it but my kind are seen as god among your people, I
simply guard you from that which you cant guard yourself from. I
have kin that wish to see the race of humans destroyed, I have
seen demons bound for your cities that have been dealt with by
       me."
His voice trailed off for a second, his eyes falling to the
darkened sky outside, the stars twinkling their light over the
opening of the cave, he allowed his lips to part again and a
small sigh to leave his lips.
"The last time I tried to defy those orders and protect your
village out in the open I released a disease on your village as
my punishment my own people forcing it down upon you as my
punishment.....Since that day I am only allowed back through
that tattoo or to recover new elders. That is why you must have
Elders to protect you when I cant be there."
His speech stopped and the cave fell silent except for the
simple cackling of the fire and the chirping of the few insects
that seemed to be hopping around, he took his seat back next to
the girl his eyes falling back upon the fire, The embers of the
flame dancing deep within his golden orbs simplifying the
emotion that lay deep within them orbs, his eyes finally shut
after a while and the cave remained silent except for the two of
       their breaths.

Echo listened intently to his story, explaining why the elders
were needed. It didn't seem to be his first choice, but it was a
must. She kept her eyes on him, though he did not look at her.
He seemed to be incredibly lost in his thoughts as he spoke. It
sounded terrible, the things he had to deal with just to protect
them. It seemed he could easily turn on them and join his kin in
the desire to wipe them out. She felt lucky to have him on her
side. She waited as he finished and the cave was plunged back
into silence, but after a moment, she spoke up again.
"Then I thank you for being there for us as you have. And I
promise to do my best to protect my people from those things
       that you cannot."
A smile formed along the line of her lips as she ran her hands
along her legs. It seemed to be getting clearer the more he
spoke about it. She was learning more in this one evening than
she had in the last few years of her life, and it was
enthralling. All of the fear she had experienced before was
being washed away by wonder and her profound need to learn more.
Knowledge was power, and the more she knew, the further she
       would go.
"By the things you have said I am assuming I have seen and
learned things faster than my predecessors." She mused lightly,
tilting her head a bit and letting strands of her hair fall
across her face. "Seeing your dragon form, asking your name, and
this." Her fingers brushed over the marking on her chest even
though her eyes remained on him. "Am I different from them in
       some way?"
Her hand dropped away from her chest and rested in her lap as
she crossed her legs in front of her to become more comfortable.
There were so many things going through her mind that she was
only just beginning to process, but she kept herself from
blurting out anything more to allow him time to answer her
questions. She was relaxed and comfortable, and all of the
unease she had felt in the beginning seemed to have gone away
when they began to speak as if they were old friends familiar
with one another in ways no one else was. It was simply that
       easy for her.

Am I different from them in someway?
That question, all the elders ask that question but she herself
didnt ask them for the same reasons those before her did she
asked it for the accomplishments she herself achieved not for
her being taken away from her family and friends to be trained
with a stranger she had never met before. A small smile traced
his lips for a second, her words sinking within the confines of
her mind shooting through every reference and every word that
was some kind of wisdom in his mind. For a second all went
silent quickly followed by a wind that tore through the cave not
violent but a small breeze. Finally his jaw parted and his fangs
shown the slight tinge in his voice showing.
"I allow the elders pick the child that he/she wishes to become
the next Elder in line, I can see deeply down into someone
sometimes even their darkest secrets, even the Elder you
currently fall under had his skeletons. Many of the children
that come with me to go through the training of Eldership ask
the same question, am I special? Just answer me this Echo, do
you believe you're special.....if so then my answer shouldn't
matter, this" he made a reference to the marking that lined her
body by tracing his claw along it "you earned being the first of
the Elders in question to give me a satisfactory answer on age,
you answered my question not with a number but with a statement
       which I like."
He fell silent once again his eyes still dancing within the
confines of the now beginning to die embers, the heat still came
from them but the light had begun to fade, another sigh left his
lips his eyes closing. A smile remained pasted to his face,
simply fading as more words slipped through his lips. These
words quieter and slightly laced with more sorrow than anything.
"Once you had accepted this job as yours you know when you
return things will be different you will no longer be branded as
a human, you will be a breed of my kind and you will live for
centuries and your clock becomes active letting us know when the
next in line for you to choose will be born, we are ageless but
humans are not. Just know that after this dreams of a family, a
good husband find themselves lost to the object of duty, why do
you think your Elder has no wife each one he has taken has faded
into the flow of time itself, you watch as those of your time
fade and others come from the dust you may be Elder for
centuries or something could happen and your title becomes
       something of question."
Once again that night the silence behold around them, his
thoughts racing wondering for once what one of the future Elders
thought, the last woman elder he told such things freaked and
tried to run getting herself captured and forcing the scar down
his eye fighting his brethren. He breathed another sigh and his
eyes finally closed awaiting the womans thoughts and how she
       felt.

Echo listened to him, as he spoke his voice seemed to wrap
around her and pull her in. He knew what he was talking about,
and she knew that. Her eyes looked up at him when he slid his
claw across the marking on her skin, goosebumps breaking out
over her flesh. She rubbed her arms with her hands the make them
go away, and bit her bottom lip softly. It was a lot to take in,
all of it. She had no idea what the elders had to go through and
what they were given in return. The ability to live, no longer
being human. The elder still looked human though, as human as
she was. She did, however, ask him once why he was not married,
though she couldn't remember his answer. It had never been a big
dream of hers to be married off to a random man of her village.
Normally the mother of a young girl set her up at an early age,
but since Echo was orphaned, she was not afforded that luxury.
       She was alone.
Directing her eyes at the sparkling embers where the fire had
been, she began to process it all. It was a lot to take in, and
in such a short time span. She was beginning to understand,
however, and she was not afraid. She did want to speak, though.
She felt she owed him her thoughts on the subject.
"I have never felt special. Ever since I was younger I was
nothing more than that girl in the village with no parents. The
only one who ever showed me much kindness and appreciation was
the elder." A soft smile touched her lips when she thought of
him. "I want to show him that I am not worthless like the others
would say I am. That I can do this and I can make him proud."
Her eyes moved up to look at the top of the cave, and she sighed
softly. "Still, I do not know why he picked me. There are many
more that are stronger, smarter, have a stronger will than I. I
sincerely hope he chose me because he knew it was the right
choice, because he saw in me the strength to get through this,
and not because he felt sorry for the child in me that still
called him father until the very end."
Bowing her head, she closed her eyes. She seemed to be at war
with herself, trying to figure out what was going on. Part of
her was ready for this. She had been chosen, she was the only
one to have received the marking, and she could do this. She
would be the next elder and she would do incredible at it. And
then, there was the part that was terrified of it all. She was
sitting in a cave in the middle of nowhere with a man that could
turn into a dragon. He was going to train her and allow her to
live for as long as she might before someone else came along.
And she wasn't even sure if she could handle it, because every
single fiber of her being believed that there was absolutely
nothing special about her in the slightest. She always had.
"Whatever I have to do, whatever tasks I must face to do this, I
will do it gratefully. But I only ask you not go easy on me. If
I was really meant to be here, if I was the one to be chosen,
then I must have the ability to get through whatever I must.
Special or not, I am here now, and my people are depending on
me." Her eyes came to him. "Father is depending on me." The last
statement was only a soft whisper, and she smiled softly,
playing with the hem of her dress in her lap.

He simply listened to the womans words, they were different from
all of those before her the words held wisdom even at a young
age but also that childish nature. He knew she would make them
all proud when she returned that wasnt a question, his main
concern was whether she would be able to take the whole process
that she herself would have to go through, would she be able to
live knowing the things she would have to do for this test. His
dark golden eyes remained locked onto the fire that had finally
died questioning the job his elders had donned on him and why he
himself didnt just stand against them. His lips parted once
again and more words slipped forth.
"You will do them proud I know that much....and trust me that
Elder your father seemed to have a knack for picking those with
potential no matter what background the person was from. From
the library of knowledge he himself drew more from the readings
of others, thats how he knew who I was when I entered the
village otherwise I would have remained unknown even to the
       elder."
His lips curled into a light smile his claw dancing within the
ashes of the now dead flame, his eyes now the brightest object
within the cave, watching the woman and wondering what she
herself could be thinking, he was old and always would be and he
unfortunately had not learned to read minds or even dance on the
fabrication of the beginning of the mind. His mouth shut and his
eyes closed, he fell back resting his back on the floor and
looking up at the ceiling of the cave, though he knew she
herself would be wondering what gifts came with being Elder,
just like every other before her.
"Its different for each person, your Elder had the ability to
read others minds, he knew almost everything they had to
hide......if he so wished, the one before him had the ability to
control fire and lightning.....and the one before had a unique
ability I have only seen amongst one elder ever to come under my
care, the ability to shift into a dragon just as myself though
she was the one who died to the disease because I overstepped my
       boundaries."
A light sigh left his lips, his hands folding behind his head
still looking upward, thoughts only simply added to the sorrow
though he himself didnt mind it, he had lived for centuries and
millenniums and sadness and happiness had only become distant
memory, he had a job and that would be his only objective in
life. He was to protect the elders and this village even if it
meant his own life was forfeit, he parted his lips once again
and spit a small geyser of flames upward his hand slightly
dancing forward, he shot his hand towards the sticks of the fire
and it lit up in a blaze of flames his voice now quiet.

Echo watched him, taking in everything about him. She watched
the way his lips moved as he spoke and the way his eyes looked.
She wanted to remember everything about this, she didn't want to
lose this experience. This was the first time she had been out

shocked, possible afraid, but she was not. She was intrigued and
she wanted to observe and listen and make sure she never forgot.
A soft smile fell upon her lips as she ran her hands along her
arms, the loss of the fire causing her to become slightly cold.
"If ever you were to return to the village after I have become
elder, I don't think I could not recognize you. Nor could I
forget you. As soon as I see you, I will know it is you. I know
       it already."
Her eyes remained on him as he laid back, trailing from his face
down along his body. He really was a sight to behold, but she
only found interest in him because of how different she was.
Echo didn't have it in her mind anything beside the intrigue of
sitting in a cave with a man that could turn into a magical
creature. A man with more intelligence than she could probably
ever imagine having, and someone she was going to learn so much
from. His words rang in the cave, causing her mind to wonder all
sorts of things as he eyes committed each part of him to her
memory, every inch of him being burned into her mind. Finally,
her eyes reached his again, even if he was not looking at her,
       just as he finished speaking.
"I wonder what sort of gift I will receive." She mused quietly,
her eyes finally leaving him to turn back to the fire which had
been lit once again. She reached forward, bringing her hand
close to the flames, smiling softly. "I never could have
imagined something like this happening to me. A few hours ago I
was thinking of how I was so alone, never anyone to anybody. And
       now..."
She looked back at him, but in doing so, her hand fell and was
touched by the flames for only a moment. She pulled her hand
back from the fire, immediately holding it to her chest. She
hadn't made a sound from the slight pain, but only held it there
with her other hand, her eyes closed. Her bottom lip came
between her teeth and she bit onto it rather roughly as she
waited for the pain to subside. It was bright and spiked through
her fingers from the tips where it was the worst. She was sure
the burn was not severe, considering it had only been a short
interaction, but it still hurt, though he tried to make it seem
       better than it was.
