       JD and Echo
By: JD Draconian Date: September 29, 2012, 1:44 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
A small village built on legends and small myths, each story had
its part of the village and with each part came a marking into
the walls or huts or even statues that lined the village. Even
now the stories turned from fantasies of the defending of the
village by an outside force to the beautiful goddess that once
graced them with her or presence, and the stories of fear and
turmoil that bent the small children into shape. Now though the
only story that carried on and remained the same was the story
of the villages protector told by their elder, around the fire
the village gathered all eager to hear the tales that made their
village what it is today. One by one the village began to fall
silent even the animals of the jungle made no sound for the
moments before the elders eyes opened and his lips parted and
the words began to seep forth like a bard in a tavern or a
parent reading to its child the words holding meaning and truth.
"The story of the village protector is one that is passed down
for generations but today I will tell you the secret that has
spanned with me for the same generations"
His words was quick followed swiftly by his eyes shifting across
the sitting of his many villagers their eyes on him awaiting for
the words that he would speak today, he cleared his throat and
finally his lips parted for the second time today and the deep
       voice slipped through once again.
"I was a young lad like many of you were once, I know such a
surprise, but on the day of my birthday and the day before I was
to become village elder, I came face to face with the village
protector. As so many elders before me had spoken I didnt
believe them until I came face to face with those dark golden
       eyes myself."
As the words left his lips, the mans feet made their way through
the dark jungle tearing the leaves up from the ground, and
leaving the prints of his feet into the ground. He wore a dark
black cloak and his hood drawn over his face hiding the golden
draconic eyes that lay beneath them, he stood roughly seven feet
tall his body seeming to tower over the rest of the people of
the village. He pushed his way through the village opening and
joined the crowd taking a seat in the way back taking special
care to not draw any attention to himself. The elders eyes fell
upon him falling silent for a quick moment before nodding in his
       direction to continue the story.
"He had dark crimson red scales that gleamed in the bright
sunlight, each of the suns rays blaring through the scales and
projection the dark crimson red color to the ground below the
beast, what it was I couldnt tell you, I simply can say the
beast was majestic and different. It was what legends spoke of
as a dragon and I know many of you wont believe me but we may
have one among us as we speak."
The hooded figure smirked and rose taking a few steps past the
elder and simply patted his shoulder a small whisper leaving his
lips enough for only the elder to hear, the words were quiet and
after that he headed back disappearing amongst the flaps of the
elders tent waiting on him to get done with his story running
his fingers along the walls of the tent.

The silence was astounding, powerful enough to send chills down
the spines of the faint of heart. Not a call nor a whisper
breached the air, and it was all of good reason. She had heard
the stories since she was a young girl. The stories of this
protector. For a long time, the girl had refused to believe any
of it. Dead set on the idea that nothing so grand could ever
exist within such a terrible and mundane world as this. Though,
through the young emerald eyes of an old soul, many things far
greater than life itself had been seen, but not all remembered.
Through trauma and death, memories became blocked and walls were
put up for protection. That was the only kind of safeguard she
had, she needed. The tales of this protector were only that,
       stories.
Still, she listened. She listened with the years of a toddler
and a smile graced upon her features that only found its way
within earshot of these stories. The village elder was the
closest thing she had to a father figure, but she was not his
only child. They were all his children, and in turn, he watched
out for them all. Echo was not special, orphaned or not, she was
a simple girl. There was nothing special about here, and she
       took care to remember that.
Echo was observant, so when the elder faltered in his gaze for
even the slightest moment, she followed it. From her place at
the edge of the crowd, her green eyes found the same person
alike, though she could not see his face. She captured her
bottom lip between her teeth and continued to watch him for the
longest moment before he moved. He seemed to move differently
somehow, and he drew her gaze easily for a girl that was
normally all over the place in her mind. Soon, however, she lost
sight of him when he entered the elder's tent, and she left it
with an abhorrent sigh. She was sure she would not see him
again, but he soon left her mind as their story was continued
and her child side took over for the time being. She could not
       resist his stories.
The gathering concluded and Echo felt the faintest bit of
fatigue wash over her. Brushing her brunette hair out of her
face, she looked around, smiling softly as she saw the elder. He
was returning to his tent, and this brought to mind the stranger
from before. Her mind began to race, and on silent bare feet,
she crept around the tent and stood a few feet away, gazing at
the back of it. She wanted so badly to know, but she knew that
listening would be wrong. Touching the amulet around her neck,
she pressed it to her chest gently and closed her eyes. Perhaps
if she waited long enough, she could catch him leaving. Though,
she had no clue what she would do if she did.

He had continued tracing the walls of the tent his eyes falling
shut remembering the first time he had visited this village back
when it was still in creation, back when the first elder had
danced amongst the tents and had so many dreams. His fingers
fell to his side remembering the death that had gripped the
elder her body peeling away at the disease that gripped her
body, he sighed and allowed his eyes to open at the flap that
was pulled to the side and the entrance of the current Elder, he
had become rather old and even now JD could see it but for now
such facts were to be left alone. Each full setting of the
village and each cycle of the Elders JD always came with the
       same offer.
"You know I have to take one away and train them in leadership
role, and of course to show them the book of knowledge that you
       yourself dipped from."
The man dropped his hood and the golden pools danced forth, the
pupils nothing more than long black slits within the eye. A scar
danced from the top of his eyes on down as if a sword dragged
across his rather tan skin, and as old as the elder looked this
man looked much older the silver hair long and flowing down to
the middle of the mans back before his lips parted again, he
went to speak but the elder interrupted him a small smile
       playing on his lips.
"I understand JD more than you know trust me, and their is only
one fit enough for this task."
The elder stepped outside of the tent, his feet carring him
through the flap with JD close behind him. They walked around to
the back and there she stood Echo, the only one he felt should
be trained in the arts of leading this small village, and there
stood everything that she thought was fake, the stories all in
the flesh. JD's eyes shifted to the elder and his eyes closed
each passing second seemed longer before his lips parted.
"So this girl is the one you wish to go there, are you sure?"
with the elders nod the man turned and took one knee before
beckoning the girl over, if the elder was sure, he simply sighed
and asked the girl "the elder wishes you to take his place when
his time ends which is soon if you accept this you will come
with me and when we return I leave again with the Elder and
still protect your village from the darkness that I always have.
So do you accept his offer?"

Echo released her amulet, her messy braid of untamed brown hair
sitting over one of her shoulders. She wondered what could be
going on, but she continued to watch the tent carefully. She
didn't want to miss anything, her senses alert. The fatigue from
before had washed away with her new found curiosity. She had
been warned many times about her curiosity, but she refused to
listen. A few times it had nearly been the cause of tragedy for
her, though she had managed to escape unscathed. Despite her
short attention span and child like tendencies, Echo was a
brave, smart girl. She was quickly becoming a woman, and it
scared her to think of how fast things were moving in her life.
If only she could become a child again, she would be happy.
Her thoughts kept her distracted, so she did not realize the
tent had been opened until the elder and his guest were a few
feet away. The young woman snapped out of her trance, emerald
eyes coming to rest first on the elder, then on the man with the
deadly looking yellow eyes. She did not speak, simply watching
them. She had not a clue what they were referring to, and as the
stranger beckoned to her, she looked to the elder for guidance.
He nodded to her as well, telling her it was alright, so the
       girl approached the man slowly.
A soft gasp left her lips at his offer, and her eyes left him to
turn to the elder. "What he is saying cannot be true, can it?
You are to leave us soon?" She seemed more upset by this fact
than surprised by the notion of replacing him. She had loved the
elder since her youngest memories, and she did not wish to lose
him. Though she could see by the look in his eyes that he was
growing weary and that he would soon need to leave. Someone had
to watch out for the village like he had, to keep the children
safe like he had done for her. With a soft frown, Echo turned
back to JD and looked into those unfathomably deep yellow eyes,
       her own paling in comparison.
"I will go with you." Her normally luscious voice that held such
depth was short of breath and choked as she spoke these words,
and she could not take them back. Her left hand clasped tightly
around the amulet that hung loosely against her chest, her right
hand gripping the side of her dress gently. After a moment she
glance at the elder from the side of her eyes. She was going to
miss him, and she feared this would be the last time she would
see him. "Can I say goodbye first?" She chimed again, her voice
restored to normality this time and her eyes back on the
stranger before her, trying not to falter under his striking
       gaze.

JD simply nodded and pointed to the opening at the front of the
town noting he shall be there when she was ready, he moved the
hood back to over his head and made his way to the front of the
town his claw digging deep into the dirt as he walked, a simple
mutter of a word and a simple crimson energy began to dance
around the entirety of the city, nobody would be able to see the
energy but the elder and the girl, as it shapped the houses a
new repairing them and simply repairing them to their former
glory. His yellow eyes closed once more, the sun began setting
and a shadow of darkness crept its way over the village
       signifying the falling of night.
Taking a seat at the outside of the village his eyes remained
closed, his thoughts shifting to the taking and replacement of
an elder. Each elder had a timer placed on their life after
joining amongst the ranks and visiting his home, they are
trained for so long and by the time they leave they have grown
into a full grown man or woman. Then the final test despite the
way it was done was the taking of the guardians blood within the
elders body gifting them with the combined effort of their own
power and his. He opened his eyes and stared out over the jungle
watching and waiting preparing for their departure and the
       entire changing of her life.
       And Now he waited...

Echo watched him walk away, waiting for a moment before she
turned to look at the elder again. A frown rested on her lips
and she stepped forward, wrapping her arms around him gently and
resting her head to his chest. She could almost feel him smiling
as he placed his arms around her shoulders. "I'm going to miss
you." She said softly, fighting the tears that threatened to
come. Tears were weakness, and there could be none of that at a
time like this. The elder rested a hand on the back of her head
and leaned down to her, speaking softly.
"And I you, my dear." He said slowly in the way she had become
so accustomed to. "But I know better than anyone that you will
       make me proud."
Echo smiled softly and leaned back, dropping her hands back to
her sides. "Will you tell the others where I've gone? Tell them
I will return and see them again." She requested this of him, a
few of the other children having become her friends the past few
years. He nodded to her and that was as good as his word in her
eyes. "I will not forget you, father." She said, standing on her
toes and kissing his cheek softly. He smiled at her, and she
knew he would not speak again. Never once had he retorted to her
calling him father, even though he truly was not her own. It
       just felt right.
After a few minutes, Echo had made it to the entrance of the
village pointed out to her before, her hands clenched into loose
fists. She looked to both sides, catching sight of the still
nameless man and approaching him, her emerald eyes wavering with
her sadness in having to leave the only home she ever knew. "I
am ready." She said softly, feeling much younger in that moment
than she had in a long time.

He had felt the womans presence almost as soon as she stepped
outside the gates and to his feet he moved and sighed, his body
tensed and he knew time had become of the essence and they
needed to get back to the castle soon and the only way he knew
how was by flying, but he was sure girl had never seen was of
his king before much less not be frightened by it, he looked
down at the girl and another sigh parted his lips before he
spoke his words light but still demanding holding their own tint
       to them.
"We have to fly since something urgent has happened and time has
become of the essence so I apologize for what you about to see
since you werent to see it till later"
When he finished speaking he stepped back from the girl and hit
his hands and knees his body beginning to grow, shooting to
almost twenty-five stories high, his dark golden eyes now a
crimson color with no pupils. His feet and hands seemed to puff
out and become paws with five dangerous claws extending out from
them, they simply touched the ground and the ground seemed to
crack under his weight. Horns extended from the top of his head
and his hair decended away and faded completely, each horn
curling out to come back and the tip graze the top of his head.
The scales were next to show themselves each scale poping in to
place amongst his body and then layering slowly over each other
to create the shielded effect they always had, crimson colored
were the scales color and gazed a beautiful ruby color to the
ground beneath them. His tail extended out from behind him and
curled around to the front of his body, the scales layering on
quickly afterwards. Each swing of the mighty tail knocking trees
from their place. His face extended outward into a giant snout,
his mighty jaws parted revealing the teeth that lay within, each
tooth carved and curled to be the perfect predator.
Lastly the sound of ripping and tearing echoed through the
transformation and a wince of pain, his back radiated an immense
mount of pain tearing and ripping echoin much louder before
sprouting forth from his back was the beasts majestic wings. The
back of each wing held the same layering of scales that his
entire body had but the front of each held the leathery insides
of a king though the right one seemed slightly scarred he parted
his snout to the sky and roared fire extending like a geyser
into the sky before looking down and speaking.
"Congratulations next Elder you are the first that gets a ride
climb on we have to go" he bent down so the woman was able to
climb on his legs folding and his head on the ground.

Echo was surprised by the urgency in his tone as he spoke,
wondering what could have happened. She wasn't sure what he was
talking about until it began to happen. He was changing before
her eyes, but she had the better sense to look away. Averting
her eyes to the ground, the words of the elder's tale ran
through her mind. Speaking of the village protector and the
being that resembled what people spoke of dragons to be like.
She slowly lifted her eyes, her pupils dilating with surprise as
she watched his wings tear from his back. She felt as if she
would be sick at any moment, and she took a step back from the
magnificent beast in front of her.
Only a few moments ago she had been reminding herself that such
things were not real, and yet, here he was. The great protector
that the elder had always spoken so highly of was before her,
and she could do nothing but gape at him. She really must have
been a sorry sight. There she was, meaning to become the next
elder of her village, and she was only a child. What this man
must of thought of her rattled her mind and her heart, but she
pushed such things away just as his transformation completed and
       he spoke to her again.
At first, Echo did not move, her feet not reacting to the order.
Her heart was beating frantically, and her mind raced. What was
she supposed to do? Was it even safe to ride a dragon? Could she
still go back? Gulping down the lump that had formed at the back
of her throat, she took a careful step forward. It was now or
never, she knew he probably would not wait around long for her
to make some sort of movement. So she went against her every
better judgement and walked up to him. He seemed even larger
than before. Her heart nearly quit on her, but she pulled
herself up on his leg, climbing as quickly as she could to get
       on his back.
Once she was up, Echo looked around. She was higher than she
ever remembered being, even after climbing to the tops of trees.
Her green eyes took in her surroundings and the faintest smile
came to her lips. Still, despite her wonder, her fingers clung
to his scales for dear life. She didn't feel safe, but there was
something that told her this protector would see to it that she
wasn't harmed. It was only then that it registered to her that
he had said they were going to be flying, and her stomach turned
uneasily. Clenching her eyes shut, she held on tighter, trying
her best to prepare herself for the impossible.

A slight puff of smoke left his lips to the side before he moved
his wings downward and shot into the sky, his massive body
shooting quickly above the trees, a small laughter left his
massive jaw quickly closing keeping the flapping of his wings at
a steady pace, each flap of the wings sending a mighty gust of
wind echoing through the air, but he made sure to keep his level
steady so as not to scare the girl anymore than he already had,
each second echoed through his mind as did the scent of
brimstone and smoke. He finally began his descent sometime close
to fifteen long minutes into their flight dropping her lightly
amongst the forest area and an encampment that had been set up.
He shifted back down to a human state a lot quicker than he had
before, this time his body shirtless the scars that lined his
chest and upper torso now visible amongst the ranks of his tan
skin. He now had long black hair with silver streaks and his
eyes had returned to their normal golden color, on his back was
a long dark black halberd, his eyes fell upon the girl and a
small smile crossed his lips but his eyes held something else,
sorrow or maybe anger but for now he spoke his tone low, but
       held remorse.
"It seems the grounds where we train the elders has been taken
over and since I am to guard the elder from that village I am
rerouting your travel to the hidden training grounds which we
have to get to from here on foot"
He took a seat next to a pile of logs and placed his hand over
top of them and they ignited the flames starting low and
beginning to dance upward into a roaring blaze, his golden eyes
remained dancing within the orange flames he was trying to
decide if he'd give her the warning or not and finally after a
bunch of speculation he spoke his words of warning were late but
there none the less. He sighed and finally spoke his words.
"A lot of stuff you never believed will be here, dragons, magic,
knights fairies all of it is real"

Echo held on as tightly as she could, thankfully not screaming
when they took off. She kept her eyes closed, not caring to keep
the wonders of flying for another time when she could breathe
properly and her chest didn't feel close to exploding. She was
sure the view was enrapturing, but there was no way she was
going to open her eyes. It was breath taking enough simply
feeling it, and that was enough for her. There were limits to
her bravery, though it would have to take something big to keep
her away. Something akin to realizing the things she had
believed to be myth becoming truth before her eyes. It had been
more of a shock than anything else that night.
Those fifteen minutes felt like a lifetime to Echo. By the time
he had dropped her from his back onto the solid ground, her hair
had come undone and her cheeks were completely flushed from the
rush of it all. She stayed on the ground, her slender form
trembling slightly as she curled her fingers into the grass. It
was certainly exhilarating but she found a certain joy in the
words on foot as they left his mouth. After a few minutes she
began to collect herself, pushing up from the ground.
Echo joined him by the fire, only just noticing that he looked
different. He could not have been young, as the protector had
been around for far longer than many could remember. Though his
build was young and he appeared to be quite strong. She wondered
if this had anything to do with the fact that he was a dragon,
but did not see it fit to ask. Soon after this thought he
informed her that everything she believe to be untrue in fact
was the opposite. She felt she could have done well to know this
sooner, but kept that to herself. There was only one question
sitting on her lips that she was compelled to ask.
"What is your name?" Echo's green eyes came to him. She was
standing somewhat by his side, drawn in be the heat of the fire.
It calmed her trembling some and the redness to her cheeks went
down. She didn't feel relaxed enough to sit, so she remained
standing, looking at him and wondering so many things that she
would probably never have answers to. She placed her hand
against her chest, tilting her head a bit. Her long waves of
brown hair brushed against her waist, no longer in the braid she
normally wore them in. "I am Echo."
