The year is 1999, not a big year for America, but for Alina it
changes her world.
Five year old Alina Ramosa sits in her room playing with her
Barbie who is clothed in her golden gown with her messy,
tangled, blonde hair frizzed out around her." Ali, I told you
it's time for bed you put that doll up or I'll put it up
myself," her mother stated as she walked by the door left ajar.
Alina grew angry, as any five year old does when told they have
to sleep." Ugh I hate going to bed! I'm never going to sleep
again!" The young girl shouted as she ran to her bedroom door
and pushed it closed, pushing her 53 lb body into the door as
hard as she could. Her mother had already moved out into the
yard to fill the dog dish with food.
Earlier that day Alina had found a strange stone with
writing all around it and had a soft red glow to it. Since she
had a hobby, as every kid did, of picking up pretty things. This
was her greatest find yet and made sure to keep close to her,
keeping it in her left pocket, having a few holes in the pockets
from putting critters in there. Little did she know the stone
would become apart of her. The written faded as the words left
the smooth rock and turned it into a burn coal in her pocket.
She never felt a thing, though it left a burn mark on her leg
where the rock rested. This stone was enchanted with the gift of
fire and would give her the ability to use the element fire for
the rest of her life.
Once her mother had came back inside she knocked on the door
to her daughters room," Come on Ali, open the door." She had
begun to play with Barbie again until the knock, causing her to
jump and quickly run back to the door to hold it shut. Placing
her palms against the painted wood she grunted and put all her
energy into holding the door shut. Her blood pressure rose along
with her body temperature. The heat of her body grew so hot that
the door began to smoke. Once the smoke rose to Alina's nose it
was to late, the door quickly spread up the door, slowly
creeping to the carpet. Her mother screamed on the other side as
Alina felt the guilt of doing something wrong." I'm Sorry
mommy!" She yelled thinking it happened on purpose. Her mother
gave her instructions to leave her room through the window
quickly.
Alina sat in her room crying and screaming as the flames
grew hotter and higher, the smoke choking her. Desperately her
mother tried to break into the room but only caught fire leaving
her daughter to hear the screams of death of her own mother. The
flames inched closer to Alina making her finally open her
window and crawl out into the yard. Alina sat in the drive way
crying till the house began to smoke out all the windows causing
neighbors to stir. The next door neighbor called for a firetruck
and for Alina's father to leave work right away, telling him he
may of just lost his family not knowing Alina had escaped.
Suddenly she remembered talking about a fire drill and where
the "safe zone" was, quickly walking across the street and sat
on the side walk in front of a lot that had no house built yet,
only a sign with a number and company.
An hour passes and she watched her only home burn down till
the roof caved, they lived so far out that no station was close
enough to save the house. After the fire truck arrived, one of
the firemen walked to the dazed girl with tears dripping from
her chin and her knees pressed to her chest. He picked her up,
not knowing the girl and just held her like his own till her
father arrived. She was questioned, but no help as to how the
fire started, she was only worried about her mother who was long
gone by now...
