Her guard was ALWAYS up... But that was fine. It was to be
expected. Without a voice to serve her, she had to take extra
precautions. She couldn't communicate her feelings verbally. She
had to go through more drawn out processed. It made sense that
shhe would close off her emotions from others. After all, there
weren't many with the patience to deal with such a handicap. Was
Cairo any different? Honestly, he didnt know. All he knew was
that This woman probably felt she had to be extra careful to
keep herself safe. She couldn't call for help if something
happened to her, which gave Cairo an idea. "Come on." He told
her, tapping her leg lightly before standing to his feet. "I'm
going to teach you to swim." He didn't want a repeat of what
happened when the two met. After all, there may not be anyone to
save her next time. Besides that, There were a couple days
before the ship docked. They needed the Cutrillium in order to
go forward with their plans for the candle, so they really
didn't have much else to discuss as far as business went. But he
wasn't quite redy to part ways with her. He probably wouldn't
see her again until they docked if he did so....

Kenya's eyes focused on the spot on her leg that Cairo tapped on
for a few seconds then tried to gather her attention elsewhere.
He's going to do what, teach her how to swim? Why? Perhaps
because of the incident that happened the day before, but that
still wasn't necessary. It's not like she drowned everyday. Her
eyes followed him as he stood and waited for her to come along,
Kenya standing up and walking towards him with a puzzled look on
her face. She couldn't help but nod her head and taking each
step he took side by side. She was scared, but she wouldn't
admit it. Not to him, nor to herself. She wouldn't be able to
afford the cost of such emotion.. fear. She had it building up
inside her ever since she saw that burn heal, but refused to
give in to it, knowing it would probably show weakness from her
side.
Even though she trusted him with their destination, she still
wondered how she'd be where they were going without a matching
suit. She never swam, thus never having a bikini or any of the
clothing she saw others wearing in water. She grabbed his arm
midways through their walk to the stairs, holding him back from
walking any step forward. She looked down at her shirt, tugging
it slightly and attempted to give him a questionable expression.
She hoped to God he would understand what she meant.

To be honest, Cairo was surprised that Kenya had accepted his
invitation. He was almost certain she would have taken the first
opportunity to leave his presence and return to the safety of
her room. However, since she agreed to his lessons, He wasted no
time in heading toward the pool. Of course, in his
spur-of-the-moment decision, he hadn't taken their apparel into
account. They were both dressed for class, or a meeting, not for
casual swimming lessons. It wasn't until Kenya stopped him on
the stairs and tugged at her shirt that he realized the error in
his planning. "There's a shop just two floors down." He told
her, smiling at her cute expression for her lack of a bathing
suit. "Let's stop there and we can both grab something to swim
in." One of the beautiful things about being on a cruise ship
was that you had access to just about anything you could
possibly need. Upon arrival at the Ship Shop, Cairo looked
around. They had a large selection of summer clothing, including
bathing suits and swim trunks. They also had snacks, books,
collectibles and souvenirs for sale. After some close
inspection, Cairo picked out a pair of black shorts with blue
flames on them. Simple, but they would get the job done. He then
returned to Kenya's side. "Pick out what ever you'd like, and we
can get going." He told her. They could easily step into the
dressing rooms and change before heading out to the pool.

Kenya nodded to his words and looked around the shop, not ready
to spend time flipping through bikinis. She picked a simple
white sans bretelle swimming suit incapable of darting her eyes
towards the rest for she knew she'd take a while before making a
decision. She took it off its hanger and went to the dressing
room, taking her clothes off and putting it on, the pool was
just seconds away anyway. Stepping out, her shirt and pants on
her arm, she dug her hand into her pants' pockets and got her
wallet out, taking out 30 bucks for how much the suit was worth.
She walked to the counter before Cairo got out and paid for her
item, letting the cashier keep the change as she stood waiting
for her partner.. lab partner to walk out.
Her heart was racing but she wouldn't give it any sort of
attention. She kept her focus on one thing. Learning something
new today. She had no idea how she would converse with Cairo in
the swimming pool, and she was afraid she'd have something
happening to her, and she.. she feared so many things but for
once in her life she was going to take this risk. Just once,
Kenya, just once. He could have killed her once, why would he
hesitate doing it aga- Stop it, Kenya, stop it now! He also
saved your life that day. Stop being so selfish. Heh, this was
going no where till he proves her wrong and her mind right.

To say that Cairo was surprised that Kenya had rushed to pay for
her bathing suit while he was in the dressing room would have
been a lie. He wasn't surprised at all. However, the view of her
in the suit was absolutely breathtaking. He admired her out of
his peripheral vision as he approached the counter and paid for
his shorts, then made his way to her side. It would have been
too classic to say "After you.." and walk behind her, enjoying
the view as he did so, but instead, He walked beside her toward
the pool, and lead her two the four foot side. Instead of taking
the steps into the water, he sat down on the side of the water,
and hung his feet into the pool, gesturing for his companion to
do the same. After a moment, he dropped down into the water,
which came up to his chest, and turned to face Kenya. "Come on."
He said. "It'll only be cold for a second.
Once she was in and somewhat adjusted to the water, he would
take her by both hands, and walk her to the five feet, where she
could still stand if she needed to, but it was deep enough to
swim in. "The first thing you have to do is learn to float." He
told her, as he noticed several guys staring at the two of them
from outside the pool. No... Staring at her... She was quite the
sight... especially in that bathing suit... "You'll sink like a
rock if you tighten your muscles too much, So I want you to
loosen you muscles, and just kick your legs slowly. I'm going to
lift you up a bit, and i want you to keep floating so your feet
don't touch the bottom, ready?" Once she confirmed, he placed
his hands on her waist gently careful not to place them too high
or too low as to be offensive, then raised her a few inches off
the ground. "Now start kicking." He said. Once she obeyed, he
would release her, and see how long she could stay afloat.

Kenya was far from the type that would let someone pay for her,
even if that kind of attitude was going to build walls between
her and the new acquaintance. She noticed however; she noticed
how he stared at her from head to toe. It made her somewhat
uncomfortable, but unfortunately, it was nothing new. She
crossed her fingers, though, hoping to God that he meant no harm
while he peered through her suit. With hardly any reaction to
his fixed looks, she caught up to him by the pool, crossed her
arms against her chest, and began reconsidering the whole thing.
Before she could even amend her decision, she found herself
taking a spot beside him, as her legs started adjusting to the
water's temperature. Then again, just as she was about to settle
to this new position, she was struck by the sight of seeing him
within the water. Oh my. This is going to be intense.
Thinking about jumping into the water only made it worse, and so
she hushed her thoughts, assured herself it would be alright,
and slid into the water. Straight away, her eyes widened as she
focused her vision toward Cairo, and held onto the side of the
pool with one of her hands. His words slithered their way into
her mind, and all she could do was nod her head hysterically. As
his hands slowly lifted her body up, she felt his fingertips
delicately nudging her to start kicking. Instantly, her feet
began moving, at first ludicrously, then a bit calmer as she
progressed. By the time he pulled away, she continued kicking,
the unusual speed beginning once more; seconds, and the motion
stopped, and she was soon gasping for air. Shit. Shit. I
shouldn't have agreed to this! It all seemed to happen so
quickly, and within moments, her hands were flailing wildly,
trying to reach for assistance.

Cairo silently commended Kenya for agreeing to a swimming lesson
so soon after her incident the day before. It was clear that she
was nervous from the way she approached the water, and even the
way she inched into the deeper water. He stayed near her at all
times to keep her as comfortable as possible, as she prepared
for her first attempt. She stayed up for a few seconds, until
she tipped forward, and caught a mouthful of water. Cairo
quickly caught her, and lifted her back to her feet. “You’re
alright you’re alright!” He told her, a playful smile on his
face. “I won’t let anything happen to you. I’d have to do all my
projects alone for the rest of the year if I did!”
He gave her a few moments to catch her breath and calm her
nerves before attempting to instruct her again. “Ok, try this.”
He said. “Put your hands on my arms.” He guided her hands to
his forearms, before returning his hands to her waist. “Keep
yourself vertical for now. Just focus on keeping yourself afloat
with your legs. If you sink downward, I’ll catch you, so the
only thing you have to worry about is maintaining a rhythm while
you’re kicking.” Once she was ready, he lifted her once more,
instructing her to use her arms to maintain her balance, and not
to help keep her afloat. “ 1, 2, 3, 1, 2,3” He repeated, helping
her to maintain her rhythm. Hopefully this time she would keep
afloat a little better, but if not, he was right there to help.

A long breath of air was all she took after Cairo caught her,
she was not even ready yet to hear anything he had to say. Once
she felt stable enough, she let go of his hands and gripped onto
the side of the pool. Inhale. Exhale. It's ok, Kenya. She looked
around the place, agitated that everyone was watching them.
Won't let anything happen to you? Really? She believed, that no
matter what, no one could fear for her life except herself.
Kenya briefly smiled to his words, nodded, and looked away.
You've never been in such situation, Kenya, what is this? The
weakness she felt throughout this entire experience made her
sick to her stomach, made her feel as if she was not in control.
She never liked the feeling of not being in control.
Without paying attention, Kenya found her hands moving onto
Cairo's arms, and she absentmindedly held onto them. As he
guided her along this practice, she took in a deep breath,
nodded to his words, and began flattening her body. With each
number, she kicked once. It was getting better, more constant,
more steady. Overwhelmed, she kicked, and kicked some more.
Almost losing balance, she tightened her grasp around his arms,
and right then and there; instead of feeling safe, she felt
defenseless.. No. Vulnerable. Kenya hated that ugly feeling of
being dependent on someone, especially if that someone also knew
of her insecurities. This was a red flag for her. Immediately,
she let go of his arms, grabbed the side of the pool, quickly
swam to the steps, and climbed her way up. However, something
made her stop there; she didn't want to leave. As before, and
awaiting no reaction, Kenya sat on the edge, and dangled her
legs down, attempting to scatter away any thoughts for a mere
moment.

Her second attempt was far more successful than the first. She
managed to stay afloat for a considerable amount of time and
with minimal help from him. “There you go!” an excited Cairo
said. It wasn’t swimming, but being able to keep herself afloat
was all it took to ensure that she wouldn’t drown. Everything
else was extra. When she started to feel uncertain, her grip
tightened on his arms and she used him to stable herself, before
guiding herself back to the edge of the pool, and climbing out.
Cairo too, went to the edge, but he didn’t climb out with Kenya.
Instead, he flattened his body against the wall of the pool and
rested his head atop his arms on the concrete next to her. He
wanted to ask if she was ok, but wondered if he should, knowing
that her ability to communicate was hindered, and she didn’t
want people to know too much about her. “Do you want to call it
a day??” he asked, his body lightly bobbing up and down with the
flow of the water. A few scattered eyes were still on her, but
most everyone had gone on about their business. They had plenty
of time for her to get comfortable in the water. No need to rush
it. Though, Cairo did feel that, if she was going to spend the
next year living on the ocean, it was a good idea for her to
learn to swim.
Using his arm strength, instead of the ladder, he pulled himself
out of the water, and up onto the deck. He made his way over to
the towel rack, and grabbed two, draping one around his neck,
and walking over to hand one to Kenya. They had three days
beforethey landed, and a week before their next lab. That was
plenty of time. “I’m gonna go take a shower and a nap.” He told
her with a smile. “How about we meet at noon tomorrow for lunch
and another lesson?” With that, he made his way to his room. No
need to wear out his welcome…
On his way down to his room, Cairo thought about his interaction
with Kenya. She wasn’t the most open person he had ever met…
Hell, she may just have been the most guarded! But she deserved
that. And she at least tried to open up a bit, so he had to give
her credit. Back in his room, he took a quick shower, as he said
he would, but me made no effort to sleep. Once he dressed
himself in a pair of sweat pants and a black wife beater, he
pulled out his laptop. Funny, for a talented chemist and
engineer, he had the hardest time connecting to the ship’s
wi-fi. But after a few minutes tinkering with it he was online.
He quickly brought up the Google browser and typed in his
search: Sign Language…
