Re: Kenya and Cairo

Cairo wasn't particularly excited about being here. But he was
prepared to put his best into it. Or at least to try... He was
trying to gather his thoughts, when he saw her... The girl from
the pool yesterday. Shit! She was on her way toward the back!
Was she coming for him? Or did she just prefer the back of the
room too? He would soon have his answer as she took a seat
directly next to him. Maybe she just chose that seat because he
was a familiar face? Yeah, the familiar face that almost killed
her the day before... He quickly looked down into his notebook
at the blank sheet of paper. He needed something to focus on!
Name, Date, Title. He began scribbling these things onto the top
of his paper, Titling it 'Day 1' He was half tempted to start it
off by writing "I'm Fucked."
Luckily, the head Professor spoke up. "Welcome to the first
annual Academic Voyage on the Knowledge of the Seas. I'm Dr
Stevens, and I'll be acting as Academic Advisor for Labroom 8C.
All of the passengers on this ship are labeled as the brightest
minds on the planet. Great things are expected from each of you.
For the next year, this is your home, and each of you will be
expected to undergo a great Intellectual evolution on your
Journey." He pushed his glasses up on his nose before
continuing. As you all know, Personal projects will be due at
the end of the year, but before you all part ways to get started
on that, we're going to start with a few minor projects here in
your assigned lab. You'll each be partnered with the person
seated next to you." At that moment, Cairo realized just how
screwed he was. Of all the people to be paired up with... He
couldn't help but to tune the doctor out at that point,
imagining all the things that could go wrong in this situation.
A long year ahead... He could feel it.

A little smirk crawled on Kenya's lips as the professor
mentioned how they'd be together on the same project. 'He must
want to kill himself now.' Her eyes darted over to a nearby
notebook, dragging it in front of her, flipping it open and
cutting a little piece. "Hello, Mr. self-healing who saved my
life yet almost killed me at the same time =)" She folded the
note, and drew it over till it reached him, a blank expression
on her face as she properly leaned back in her place. A lot of
thoughts mixed in her head as she waited for something to read
as a response. She was smiling, but what she was feeling inside
was far more than happiness. Maybe doubt, worry, confusion..
Kenya had no idea if it was even a good idea to interact with
this man, especially since she hardly knew how to interact at
all.

A note? Really? Cairo couldn't help but laugh when he saw the
folded paper in front of him. Despite the ensuing fear of what
the note would say, he unfolded it, and took a look. That's when
his heart sank into his stomach. She noticed. A few hours on the
ship and he had already given himself away. But maybe it didn't
have to be so bad.
Maybe it could just be a secret between the two of them. He
reached into his bag and pulled out an odd looking material. It
was a cloth of his own invention, created from his own cells.
When he rubbed it against the paper, not only did it erase her
message, but it returned the paper to its brand new state, as if
it had never been touched. If anybody found the paper, his
secret wouldn't be written on it. Then, he would write his
message in response.
"Cairo will do. And Hi." It was simple, and not particularly,
direct, but he did at least introduce himself; an act he hadn't
taken when they "met" the day before.

Kenya could tell the note resembled childhood memories. Yes, it
did, but unfortunately it was the only way she could communicate
with him without his knowledge of her disability. She didn't
want him to know just yet, she wanted to wait, even if for an
hour or two. Her ears picked up the light laughter that escaped
his lips, causing another smirk to be drawn on hers, the corner
of her eyes glancing to his side and watching as he completely
wiped what was written away. Even though she heard the sarcastic
snicker, she still felt as if he was slightly worried the secret
would spill. Yeah, of course he was. He has something others
don't, they could send him off to some sort of lab or something
to test him. She knew that feeling, recognized it way too much.
Kenya's head tilted to the side for a moment, hearing the
talkative professor as he titled each project they had to start
on sooner than later, then she spotted the paper beneath her
face. Slowly, she unfolded the paper, a faint smile on her face.
She took a pen and began writing down already.
"Hey, Cairo. Kenya here. So what do you think, coincidence or
just luck?"

Her name was Kenya.. There was something they had in common
already. They were named for well known sections of Africa. Odd,
when coupled with everything that had lead up to that moment. The
pool, the discovery, the lab and the partnering... What else
would he discover with time? It was already a bit too odd to be
coincidence. And so that was his answer.
"Definitely not a coincidence..." But if it was luck, was it
good, or bad? For the first time, he turned and looked at the
womans face. She was his definition of beauty and then some! But
she also knew something he hadn't wanted anyone to know. But
there was NO WAY, that being partnered up with her could be
completely bad...
"Gotta be luck"

Her eyes took a quick look at the paper then back up at the
speaker, her head nodding at what she had read, followed by a
head-shake at his distance. Well, he definitely had the right.
He was talking to a complete stranger who knows a secret no one
else should know about. It might have been luck for him, but it
was fate for her, except she couldn't possibly put that in the
choices she had given him; too awkward.
"You're not very talkative, are you?"
Who was she kidding? She wasn't very talkative either, but she
finally found someone who shared the same talent as she did.
Well, not exactly the same but close. Both of them had a mutual
trait; being different. Kenya's central teeth caught her bottom
lip and held it hostage for a few seconds, even after she passed
him the note. She did that when she was nervous, maybe
slightly.. excited. Excited? This was going to be interesting.

once more, Cairo refreshed the paper before writing on it. It
wasn't as if there weren't a million things he wanted to say,
but between attempting to pay attention to the Proffesor, and
passing notes with the cutest girl in class, he felt like he was
in high school all over again!
"I guess not. But There's quite a bit on my mind."
He stopped writing for a while, but didn't pass the note,
apparently trying to articulate what he was trying to say to
her. He wanted to talk about his secret. It wouldn't hurt him to
have someone he could confide in. So many ways to bring about
conversation and open up, but instead, he took a different road,
for the time being at least.
"Writing notes in class... You weren't very well behaved in High
School, were you? xD"
A smile. That was a step up from his past notes. It was an
attempt to establish some sort of connection, which, up until
this point, he had tried to avoid. Maybe there was hope for
Cairo yet.

A smile appeared on her face, this time brighter than before,
grabbing her pen and almost beginning to write but pausing for a
second. Her eyes returned to the first sentence she was about to
set aside. 'A lot on his mind? What could possibly be on his
mind?' She shook her head, crushing down the agitating thoughts
in her head. 'No, Kenya, no, he couldn't have found out. You
aren't as stupid as he is, you wouldn't blow your cover.. at
least not as fast as he did.' Yes, she was friendly, but she
always put herself first, always cared about herself more than
she did anyone else. Perhaps that was the only flaw about her,
or maybe there were more. Only time would tell.
"No, not really, I was quite the trouble maker. Except, I got
good grades too, obviously."
Kenya cleared her throat, looking at him for a moment, before
gazing back at the paper below her pen. "So, quite a lot you
say? Like what?"

Of course Cairo noticed the smile on the woman;s face. It was
instinct, after all. Even out of the corner of his eye, he could
feel it radiating from her features. Her note confirmed his
suspicions, and brought about a smile of his own.
"i knew it. You were the girl the teachers couldn't figure out,
but could never say anything about because you always got A's"
Of couse she wanted to know what was on his mind, but this
simply wasn't the time. There was the chance of the professor,
who was wandering the halls, catching them at the wrong time,
before he could wipe the paper clean. So he decided to move the
conversation on to somewhere where they could have a regular
conversation.
"Let's have lunch after lab. I'll tell you about it then."
Of course, he had considered giving her his room number, instead
of inviting her to lunch. It would be more private, with less
risk of someone overhearing, but it would also sound more
forward. So this would have to do....

Lunch after lab? What was she going to do, how was she supposed
to act? Millions of questions slashed her mind, breaking every
little piece of balance she attempted to build. Staring at the
paper beneath her hand, Kenya took a deep breath and her pen
began sliding over the paper with a slight shakiness of her
fingers.
"Alright then, I've got something to tell you as well. Lunch it
is."
In complete hesitation, she slid the note over, each of her
hands hugging the other as she tried to regain her composure
while thinking what could happen during lunch. Would he be
disappointed that she was mute, would he be excited to know they
share something that was highly considered supernatural, would
he be terrorized when he finds out what she came her for?
'Probably, doubt it, perhaps.'
