       The LYNX Steam Generator

I have been putting the Lynx Monotube boiler back together. A
couple years ago I leant it out and they took it all apart. The
system will do about 200 watts. I got so distracted with wind
for years that I never really showed the system completed and
running. It may be helpful for some to see how things work with
steam and the monotube boiler. It is wood fired because if you
can get gasoline there really is no point. But in a completely
"grid down" situation - power, hot water, heat would be nice.
Steam power is barely understood anymore. There are a lot of
misconceptions, myths, and re-inventions. Most of the people
that know steam are in their 80-90's. Tom Kimmel, president of
the Steam Automobile Club of America has painstakingly built a
library of information and interviews with steam men around the
world. Tom also has a large collection of steam cars, engines,
boilers and is involved in the newest technologies. This fall
he will again be at the Salt Flats trying to set new steam car
       speed records.

       Right on.
I am amazed at the complexity of the stanley steamer.

       I made some progress today.
Mounted the 500 watt alternator, steam engine, water reservoir,
battery, rectifier, and pump on a base. Took some time to get
the stator positioned correctly so it wont rub. At 10 psi no
load the PMA puts out 27 volts DC. Hooked up to the battery it
starts charging at about 7 psi. Its too damn cold right now to
set this up properly and test the system. I have tested the
components separately many times, just not this combination
together. I put the boiler back together a couple days ago and
added a blow down so i can drain the system when not in use.

Hi, great work, thanks for posting. I look forward to your test
results. I had to order a bunch of work holding parts and bits
to finish the boxer. It should be about 2 weeks. Hoping for
warmer weather, teen temps are just to cold. ;D Again great
       work.

It was warm enough today to test this 1/4 HP engine and charging
system a bit more. It works quite well. I need some dry wood
next time and the stator plate needs to be perfectly aligned so
it doesn't rub. The 12 volt pump puts out 50 psi and comes on
automatically when water level drops below the bottom spiral
coil. I like how slow the engine runs with this alternator. I
am also going to add a blow down valve at the bottom of the
monotube so i can more easily drain it. The boiler only has
about a pint of water in it.
Afterwards I blew down the boiler to get the water out and put
       the engine away.
I'd be happy to share any of this if someone wants to put
       something like this together.

Nice, thanks for posting. Did you have any power outages from
       the ice storm?

That is SUPER cool!! How many watts do you figure it is
producing? That is definitely worthy of replication. Looks like
a broject I would like to tackle. It looks like a simple engine?
Not compound, right? I have viewed all your vids on you tube
about building a boiler. Something like that would be great for
our place, where I have 40 acres of timber, to augment an off
grid system during peak use time.

Thanks. It's definitely an esoteric hobby and a strange
       passion.
This setup will make about 150-180 watts max. You can't defy
physics. Its a 1/4 hp engine and if pushed will do almost 1/3
hp. A 1/4 of 750 watts is about 180 watts and with losses will
come out to about 150 watts.
But as I have shown 150 watts can be put to good use if you
adjust your thinking about what is necessary to provide comfort.
I have one more tweak on this boiler. I need to add a spiral
coil section in front of the water sensor. Right now the water
sensor is at the top of the water wall that picks up radiant
heat only. This means that the spiral sections are receiving
all the convective heat and get too hot. By always having a
little water in the lower spiral it will quickly flash to steam
       and call for more water.
Other than that tweak the design is pretty good and works for
what it is designed to do.
On the drawing board for some years now is a much better design.
Self feeding, top fired rocket burner, much larger capacity.
Ah, for more time and money.....

       Money and Time
I have the later but not the former.
But also dream about things like this. It's just that I worked
for 40+ years being on call and out of town most of the time
that I was never home long enough to tackle anything but putting
ideas down on paper. I did have a break in 1997 and implemented
some ideas, sold them around the world etc. but It's amazing how
many hours a one man company can suck up. I finally gave that
up, got a job working for someone else just to get a rest :-)
But I still have your passion.
