Off Grid Room for Bugging "In" not "Out"
By: lynx wind Date: November 23, 2013, 3:03 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Recently our home was out of grid power for 6 days. We have an
8500 watt gasoline powered generator so it was a minor
inconvenience in the big scheme of things. But we forget that
100 years ago this was a standard way to live. It's almost like
the dark ages now, and we have all but forgotten the old
       technology.
I strongly urge people to modify one room in their house to be
an off grid room. It should have efficient lighting ready to go
when needed. LED lights run off an LJL type circuit and charged
by solar is very simple. It's amazing what a small solar panel
       and battery can do.
Have an inverter that is ready to go off 12 volts for small
       appliances.
Look into a simple two pot space heater.
Think about storing some water and yes, think about sanitation.
A Coleman portable toilet is simple, clean and small enough to
be stored in a closet. I have one for my boat. I also have a
very small marine stove that is very efficient and simple. It
burns denatured alcohol and can cook a whole hot meal in minutes
       indoors.
So if the power does go out and gasoline is hard to get for some
reason you have a room where you can stay warm, have light,
entertainment, food and toilet. Think about bugging in instead
of bugging out. If the SHTF it may be better to stay put rather
than get stuck away from home somewhere.
If you do decide to bug out, all these items can go with you.
There are also some nice 12 volt refrigerators, and DIY bucket
       coolers.
I have heard it said that people can do pretty well for about
three days without services and then they get a bit panicky.
You would want to weather that 4th-20th day on your own without
needing to venture out too much. I know this all sounds a bit
doom and gloomy, but it is something to think about and consider
being prepared. Sort of like insurance for your car, home,
health....why not have survival insurance too.
I would love to have your thoughts and maybe we can put together
a list of items that would make a one room survival room.

Think RV. Rvs have everything that can sustain an off grid
lifestyle like propane stoves, refrigerators, heaters, and even
built in sewage and fresh water storage. Called boondocking,
some folks will take off for two weeks and use solar for power
and only rely on the outside world for food. All the amenites
are built in. Why make a special room when a good used RV is a
possible all inclusive and existing option. Sorry if this is a
bit off the bugging out topic but it just kinda makes sense and
       avoiding re-inventing the wheel. 😊

That is a great idea. And it's mobile too.
