Vawt with treadmill motor

Has any body ever tried using a vawt windmill with a tread mill
motor in place of the stator and magnet plate? I recently have
come across one and thought it may be a good use for it instead
of using it for a hawt windmill . I think it would fit nicely
under it and it has a big enough serpentine pulley that's flat
and should mount right up to the bottom of the rotor .I don't
know if the motor can survive being turned this way because of
the bearings in it . It also came with the control board which
should have a lot of goodies with it. I have not had time yet to
examine it real closely but I think it has some kinda rpm
monitor hooked to the tail of the motor (a little disk with
holes in it and a sender unit )

You could use the motor with a belt (that would save the
bearings) but belts steal power.
The wheel with the holes in it is called an encoder. Probably
optical with an infrared LED and photo diode or photo transistor
sensing the holes.

I have only had good results with alternators taht are extremely
free to spin. There is so little startup torque with a lift
type Vawt, and that was the one thing that always held the
design back. An alternator for the Gull type lift VAWT needs to
spin like a lazy susan at a Chinese restaurant after a few
cocktails.
How easy does the treadmill motor spin?

lynx is right. doesn't a treadmill motor have brushes? Only
answer i can think of is a drag type vawt they have more
starting torque. Put a crank on it and hook up a meter does it
get at least to 5 volts?

Well at this time I don't know much about this motor ! its still
on front half of treadmill I can't read the tag on motor . I
have gave it a spin with my hand and got 1.5 volts dc at the
time (not a strong spin ) I was not sure if it would be ac
current or dc but I do know it has brushes cause I can here them
dragging . I don't have much free time at this point,in between
doing leaves,getting snow plow ready for winter and everything
else ( finding a new home for diy 75 ) But I probably will
mount it on my hawt .

I had to move the old tread mill outside to make room to work on
my truck so I took off the motor ! and this is what is on the
name plate. 130v dc ff.1.0 amo 2.5 hp 6700 rpm 18 amp CW
rotation now is that looking at the pulley so you see it from
the outside or looking at it from the motor side . I hooked it
up to a meter and gave it a spin with my finger on the pulley
and I could get it up to 4.5 volts (not bad ) I also hooked it
up to a 12v light bulb and could get the filament to glow pretty
good .
@ lynx wind the motor spins pretty easy but you can just feel
the magnets pull, defiantly not as easy as the 75

It would work, but the resistance is usually fairly high with
that type of motor which means a lot of the power will get
turned to heat in the windings. You would probably not see it
start until winds got to 12 mph which is over average in most
areas. But, give it a try with something, maybe your HAWT and
let us know.
If nothing else you could probably Ebay it for good money.
