       Hi all
My windmill finally got a new home ( well at least the pole is
there ) So may be I can get it to spin and test out the aluminum
wings! to see how they will hold up in wind tests (not my leaf
blower). I would have put it on the pole today but it was pretty
windy and I figured better be safe than sorry. I am tempted to
let it run unloaded just to see if it can take a harsh
punishment at least while I am there . well I
will keep you posted but probably that darn 7 day curse will go
       into effect all over again

Please, please don't run this turbine unloaded. You will be
very unhappy with the results. I have seen three VAWTs run
unloaded and each ended up badly. One fiberglass one just blew
apart throwing itself all over (not mine). I have never had a
failure with the GULL design when loaded.

Well after last night I think the wings will stand up to almost
any wind ! This morning I went and inspected them and no signs
of damage! (Phew) I didn't hear any sounds of them flexing at
all last night! and the wings are made with out any center rib
for support . This is a pict I took of it spinning last night

Humm ! well I didn't think about ice build up on blades, but I
could always hook up battery to stator and melt it off . I could
always send wife outside with hair blower and melt it off (need
to send her out and remove snow from rotor now)

I have run these VAWT year round. The ice wont usually buildup
if they are running. If ice does build up it wont spin and will
not run until it melts off. I wouldn't worry about this.

Wont spin if it has ice on one or more blades. It'll just sit
there. I have run these in snow and sleet. You will only see
buildup when the wind stops or slows way down, then you have to
wait for a thaw or go out and clean it off.

The aluminum idea looks real good. I am an aircraft mech for my
day job, 25+yrs. if you were worried at all about strength, use
aircraft alclad aluminum sheet of desired thickness spec'ed to
2024T3. It is not terribly expensive and is relatively easy to
work (depending on thickness). Hand forming is fairly easy up to
25 thou thickness. Anything thicker and a brake of some sort or
a form is needed. I would simply add 3/32" rivets at the
TEnspaced say 2" apart at assembly with a good adhesive. As far
as any icing concerns, if rime icing were to occur on the blade
leading edges, it will build up uniformly. Problems with
aircraft occur when ice begins to shed, it rarely does it
evenly, causing vibrations. Those vibrations help it to shed
faster. I don't see it being a valid concern for a VAWT.

I just went outside and made a new wing out of left over trim
stock and made it with a folded TE its 18" x 4.5' now I did this
in about 3 minutes so easy !. I had forgot I had a simple
folding tool That I use for bending sheet metal For HVAC work.
Now this wing is not the proper size but just wanted to see if I
could bend TE easy and I did, all I need now is to make wing
formers and try it with proper size sheet of aluminum then glue
it together. Here are some pictures of wing

@CG how strong is that GG sticking to the aluminum?
