Hi, I started collecting materials to fabricate the small steam
engine. The project is to gain metal fabricating experience.
I am using pieces from the scrap bin.

are you going to fabricate the cylinders and pistons yourself?
or find round things that fit into pipes real good? by the way
those metal slivers are a bugger.

Hi, I am going to start with the camshaft and work my way up.
The large rectangular blocks will be the piston cylinders and
the pistons will be aluminum 1 inch stock, maybe, I really not
sure at this point. I do not have any real experience with metal
fabrication. Some things you have to learn by doing and this is
a first attempt, so I really do not know what to expect. It is
just a prototype it is not going to be a piece of art. I will be
real happy if I can the drill holes in the right place and get
the finished project to work. I am sure there is going to be
many unseen problems, I plan to take it one step at time. Wish
me luck, I am sure I am going to need it. :-\

They have some new products out now.
I've seen something with the number 2000 in its name for welding
aluminum together using a mapp torch.
It's likes soldering but you use aluminum rods and a torch.
       Might help with the fabrication.

Hi, I started fabrication of steam engine. Drilling a 1 inch
hole 1.75 deep is harder than I thought. Half of the hard part
is over and one more to go. Drilling multiple small holes inside
the 1 inch diameter was easy. Drilling out the 1 inch hole took
a lot of time. For future projects it may be worth the added
expense of using brass or aluminum for the piston cylinder.

Hi, just a update of the piston block. I had to sharpen the new
drill bit set from Harbor Freight and tighten the belts on my
drill , mill, lathe and now I am able to drill the piston
cylinders in more responsible period of time. This a first
attempt and a learning experience. Not perfect but now I can
move forward. I still have to drill the rotary valve and uniflow
       ports.

Hi, I am starting to fabricate the crank shaft. The video shows
a project with the cranks set at 90 degrees. Some plans show the
cranks set at 180 degrees, is one ways better than the other????
