nice example of rotary valve, basically I am taking parts of
each design posted to design the engine
I have to fix my bandsaw than I can start fabrication
trying to limit fabrication method to require just a drill press
and hand tools

Hi, thanks for keeping me motivated. I am working on modifying
the firebox. I also have to add a air fitting so the water from
the boiler can be blown out after each run when the temperature
is below freezing to prevent the pipes from bursting. Solving
the water pump problem was a major obstacle.

I am not ignoring this thread. I am trying to come up with the
simplest possible engine design for you. I have the same issue
with the complexity and intricacy of most of the designs out
there and not having all the machine tools. You have done such
a fantastic job on the boiler. Few people will tackle a
monotube boiler.
My thought is a double cylinder oscillating engine with uniflow
ports drilled at BDC. The only drawback is the port face gets
worn without lubrication. I'll draw it up for you later today.
The alternator can be integrated in the design so that the
flywheels are the magnet rotors. In the meantime look up
oscillating steam engines to see how the concept works.

I drew a double acting oscillating engine but it is still a lot
of work to make. My suggestion would be to buy two of these
machined kits and use the shaft to link the second kit.
Each fully machined kit is $88.

While it may seem like a toy, two double acting 5/8" pistons
will give 4 power strokes per revolution. Attach Neo magnets
around the flywheel and a coil pickup for power generation. If
you like it you could then think about making a larger version.
But you may be surprised how much power it could make. Another
advantage is this type of engine doesn't need such high pressure
and wont consume so much steam. 20-30 psi will output good
power under load.

Hi, really like this design. It is uniflow so no exhaust valves.
I have to order some pillow block bearing and than I can get
started. There will be one major difference, I will be using a
rotary valve. The crankshaft can be just drilled and pinned, as
shown here.

Very good. Its a lot of work to build a good steam engine from
scratch. But, I have a feeling you enjoy the process, so have a
great time.
I ordered two of the PM Research 2A engines and will put it
together so you can see it working. A nice winter project and
then I can join you in the fun

Hi, that is great news. I was looking at the machined kits a few
weeks ago. I could not find a way to drive a PMA after the two
are joined together and I was not sure if they would not fight
each other when they are connected together. I have no real
knowledge regarding mechanical design. Mounting the PMA to the
flywheel sounds interesting and I look forward to your results.
