       Rocket Stove/Oven/Hot Water
By: LynxWind Date: February 18, 2018, 10:24 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I finally got around to designing a Rocket Stove. A couple in
Maine asked if I could design something for their house. It
took some time to figure out how to pack everything in and still
follow the functional principles of a good rocket stove design.
They didn't want the mass heater bench that stores warmth. This
could be easily added by exiting the exhaust out the side.
The couple I designed this for wanted brick. It could be made
with other materials. Just about everything can be found at a
local hardware except the sheet steel for the burners, and oven
       door.
       The features of this design:
Large wood burn chamber with tall vertical drop - self feeding
       for hours
       Two stove burners
       Oven
Hot water coil for baseboard or hot tap water feed - passive
       convective flow
       Wood storage
       Easy build - relatively
Fits in with a kitchen and can be made as pretty as you want
       Ash clean-out
       Wood storage cabinet

       Looks good.
Is there a draft that goes through the wood supply compartment?
Does the oven part have a door so that the draft draws at the
bottom rather than the oven opening?
It might also be nice to have a cooktop that is just a flat
sheet of steel that is immediately before the oven. You could
have the fire/draft skim along its bottom so a pan could be put
       on to boil.

Yes, there is a stove pipe elbow at the back of the cabinet
taking exhaust from the middle chamber to the oven. There the
heat is discharged and then up the flue. The people I designed
this for wanted an arched oven door. It is counter weighted to
stay closed. There are two burners over the two combustion
tubes. Plates on top can be removed for direct contact cooking
or a small oil drum can be placed over for more radiant heating.
There is also a coil that can be used for convection of hot
water to another room or supplement hot water.
I packed a lot in. They will take pictures and report back on
       performance.
If anyone on this board wants a pdf copy of the 18 page
       instructions, just PM me.

I built a five block rocket. It went through wood like a hungry
beaver. Seems , in order to burn hot and be smokeless it has to
" rocket through the fuel supply".

A rocket stove is efficient for two reasons.
       1. The fuel is burned more completely so more energy is
extracted from the same amount of wood
       2. The heat release is stored in the mass and radiated instead
of hot gases going up the flue
A small model may include just the J tube. You will get a fast
hot burn which is exciting but it's more like a gas torch. Many
of the camp stove designs don't have the downward turn and just
blow hot gases up and around a kettle. Often simple block
design don't have an insulated combustion tube that keeps the
       gases hot.

Be assured that this information is good for those who are
       interested in this.
