       What's New

       ---------------------------------------------------------
The last Gull 40 is shipping out and just a few Gull 160s are
left in stock. We are very close to finishing up a deal to have
a new model - the Gull 100 - manufactured completely in
Michigan. It will be marketed more aggressively once it is in
production. The Gull 100 is a 24" x 24" model which fits nicely
between the 20" D and the 40" D model. It also has a dual
magnet plate alternator and can be single phase, 2 phase or 3
       phase.
The single phase winding is fun because 120 vac can be easily
tapped off a transformer in the AC line. The 3 phase is 150%
more efficient but is only good for rectified DC output.
The target market for the Gull 100 is the boater, the dock, the
cottage and the residential customer not wanting a too big unit
but wanting enough power to be comfortable.
Once the Gull 100 is successful, a larger unit may come back to
       the production line.
We still like the LJL circuit and the Soln1 but the LED
manufacturers keep changing the bulbs so that is a challenge.
It may come back in a new form at some point.
The Seagull 75 DIY plans are going to get an update with a four
coil stator, 8 magnets, a 24" x 24" layout and blades cut from
       common Fanfold insulation.
Bare G100 alternators will be available for those just wanting a
non-cogging alternator designed for low rpm high output. Handy
for those wanting to use Hydro, Bicycle or steam to make
       electricity.
A 10 watt solar panel that adapts to the wind turbine pole will
       be available in coming months.
Then the next step is to do a DIY plan for making one room in
the house an emergency self sufficient off grid space.

       What is fanfold insulation?

Fanfold is a 1/4" thick underlayment for behind home siding.
The material is smooth and paintable. The LE of a blade forms
nicely where the material is creased already and can conform to
the blade shape. It is just one method for making a durable
VAWT blade. SUT has shown how well aluminum sheet metal forms a
blade and is very easy to do.
The new DIY plans will be available Jan 1 after some testing. I
have already changed the blades to 36" total height. The
aesthetics of the VAWT at 24" x 30" or 24" by 36" looks great.
Really a builder can choose any height as long as it doesn't
       exceed 36".

The Seagull 100 DIY plans are underway. The alternator for the
prototype is a 3 phase 8 magnet, 6 coil design and goes together
much easier than before. Resistance for the alt is 2.0 ohms
which is great, but the cutin might be too high. The 24"
diameter I thought would appear smallish, but no- not really.
The assembly mimics how the productions units go together and
come apart if needed. No complicated tools needed so far.
The test unit should be ready before Christmas.

Looks good. But is the fanfold foam durable?

The Fanfold painted would hold up for a year to two years. I
prefer the solution SUT came up with. It's cheap, durable,
looks great and it's "one and dun" The aluminum formed into a
blade takes less time than cutting the rib formers. The
aluminum blades are pre-finished in satin white.

I made some final decisions based on observations of the new
Seagull 100. 3/8" plywood is good, 3 phase and single phase PMA
are both good so added both to the new plans, a TSR of 1.2 is
just about perfect which means the alt gets 22 awg magnet wire
and a resistance of 5.5 ohms. Charging is solid and smooth from
7mph on up. The sound of charging at 20+ mph sounds like the
purr of a Harley. The dimensions are optimized and balanced
with the PMA. In a few days the new plans will be out. I'll
have a video up soon as well.

Looking over the diy plans you don't mention the fanfold for
wing skins, just paper, fiberglass and aluminum. Was that left
out for a reason? I would think that would be the easiest diy
       material.
Also a little confused as to how two star coils can have 1.73
times the power of two series connected coils.
It gets frustrating when you look at the statement that " at 26
mph the battery bank can be brought to 15 volts" when nationwide
the average wind speed is less than 15 mph.
