       Instrument preference for fellow innovators

We experienced a serious structure fire at work about a week
ago, burnt a lot of high dollar instruments in my tool box and
our overhaul/parts room. I had a new fluke 77 series IV that got
smoked in the heat along with other items. I have decided to go
a bit retro in replacing it. I ordered a new Simpson 270-5RT
precision VOM and a cheaper DMM for quick checks and as an all
around travel troubleshooter. Anyone else use analog meters?
What are your thoughts? My main reason for the analog is that
is what I learned on and first owned( an old clamshell
micronta), and there are things you can pick up on when
analyzing circuit dynamics that you just can't see with a DMM. I
am a bit excited to get my mitts on it!!

The biggest thing I don't like about my digital fluke 73 meter
is when reading Ac v off of the windmill it will read nothing
until it gets over a certain point where is my OLD, Old micronta
from radio shack will. I want to say it still has the original
battery (radio shack) in it but it cant, be because the meter
was purchased in 1981 but on the battery is says for transistor
products and I don't ever remember purchasing batteries from
       them.

I will try it again and see if its still happening ! I did just
change the battery a few days ago because it was acting funny
       . Thanks For the tip

Thanks for the feedback. What I don't like about fluke, is that
even their DMM's are made in China. I am sure the engineering is
US. I am also trying to find a Simpson 1699 milliohmmeter. If I
can't find one I may get the 444-2. It looks like a good unit.
We have a thermocouple system that is on the aircraft that
requires a check every 300 hrs of operation. An 8 ohm system
that has to be adjusted to 8 ohms +/- .02 ohms. We adjust it
with some ballast coils in the loop, add or take away wire as
needed and resolder the connection. It is kind of old school,
but like the old analog meters, very dependable when set up
       properly.

CG -that is about how the meter that was burned works. It also
has an Rx1 and x10 scale, plus an indicator test function that
allows you to drive the temperature gauge through its full scale
from ambient temp to 1000deg C. Someone must be living right as
I talked with some associates with another helicopter company in
the region and they had a meter that they told me to come and
pick up for free. It is s perfectly good unit like the one of
       ours that we lost.

Received the new 270-5RT yesterday and tried it out on a couple
things. It is NICE! I will try and post a pic or 2.
