Yes lynx, both are fun, but as i'm finding to my cost, jumping
in does work out really expensive, which is fine if your end
point is a future business like yourself, you can eventually
recoup research costs, but not so good for a one off build :'(

I learned a lot of this stuff on the old VAWT forum. Steve
Hansel, Bernard from Germany, Lloyd from Canada, Brian from
Michigan and many others did a tremendous amount of science,
computer simulation, discussion on this topic of non-cogging low
rpm PMA. I probably was the more prolific builder, jumping in
and trying stuff. But building on their knowledge I was able to
utilize my creativity to circumvent a lot of mechanical
       impossibilities.
It is possible to build remarkably efficient PMAs. It is
possible to build inexpensive PMAs. It is tough to achieve
       both.
For a newbie this new design for a 3 phase single plate alt will
be the best entry point. Low cost, simple, and fairly efficient
with no wasted time and money. I am working on perfecting the
dimensions and getting the materials this week.

Could you provide a linkto the vawt forum? I think when i tried
to locate this forum once before, i found it had been closed(i
might be getting mixed up with another one). I tried to join the
'otherpower' forum also, but no luck.

       Guys,
Any opinions as to advantages/disadvantages of serpentine coils
versus multi coils linked together? Are there any clear
benefits, or just down to personal choice when it come to
       constructing the stators?
       cheers
       jim.

I have a lot of experience with serpentine coils vs single coils
in series. If you aren't looking to maximize space serpentine
can be simpler. The strands tend to overlap diagonally when
making turns and so pile up, whereas with single coils they can
be very compact. I used to make 3 phase alternators with a
single wound coil about 2' diameter that then was crunched into
a jig. The end product was a 4.5 Lb mass of copper 3 phase alt
that you couldn't see any light through. That is not an alt the
average person would want to make.
Another alt I made was made up of belts of copper woven in such
a way, three belts could be layer on top of each other and then
pressed down to 3/8" thick. Again, you couldn't see any light
through. That required a lot specialty jigs and patience. The
final alternator was 40" diameter and had 120 magnets.
My suggestion is to use single compact coils and strong magnets.
Either single phase or 3 phase. 3 phase turns smoother than
single phase, but both can put out good power. I did single
phase for the DIY because it is simpler, not better.

Another newbie theory question for lynx et al,
Would a turbine connected to a 48v system require four times
more torque to turn it than the same turbine connected to a 12v
       system?
Still trying to define parameters and getting to grips with this
       :'(
       Thanks.

Roughly speaking, voltage equates to speed and amps relate to
       torque
       Volts x amps = watts
       Speed x torque = HP
       1 HP= 750 watts
If you take the same generator and turn it four times faster you
will have 48 volts. If you design the turbine's generator to
put out 48 volts at 100rpm, it will put out 12 volts at 25 rpm.
