Sourcing backer plate for Seagull 75 DIY w/ Neo Magnets
By: baccula Date: August 29, 2014, 12:54 am
       ---------------------------------------------------------
       Hi All,
First post here, just got my plans last week, and parts have
started trickling in! I think I've finally wrapped my head
around the design, although the bearing assembly is still pretty
fuzzy. Anyway, I decided to go with Neo magnets for MOA POWAH.
1.5"x.75"x.25", N42. I understand from the plans that this means
I will need a more substantial backer than the paint can lid
provides. So my question is, where's the best (cheapest) place
       to find such a thing?
I found a place online where I could get 12"x12" galvanized
steel (12 gauge), but with shipping it would be $30!
  HTML http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=13263&step=4&showunits=inches&id=992&top_cat=849
I'm in the Denver, CO area, we have some sheet metal fab shops
in the area, but I don't know if it'd be any cheaper there. Just
       looking for thoughts or suggestions!
Also, if anyone would be willing to provide a close up of the
alternator assembly, maybe I would understand the bearing fully.
One last thing, the plans indicate to spray-tack the template
directly to the paint can lid (or backer plate), then magnets
get superglued on top of the template? Doesn't that mean that
there's just a layer of paper holding the magnets to the metal?
I understand that resin is added later to reinforce, but it
seems like metal-to-metal interfacing would be preferable, no?
       Thanks in advance!

       Welcome @baccula
What I did with the magnet plate template was to tape it (or
glue it ) to the steel plate then used a razor knife to go
across all the pertinent lines then removed the template, the
razor knife had left scratches in the plate and just place the
magnets on the plate . The backer plate I would try to find
locally you may not find it cheaper for the steel but you don't
have to pay shipping. I have herd of people using worn out saw
blades for the backer plate, but I have never used them so I
don't know if they are as good . I will snap a picture of mine
when I have it down but that will be in a few days

I have one pre-drilled steel backer plate and six 1x2x1/4" Neo
magnets. I would be happy to part with the set for $35 if that
helps. Personal Message me if you want to do this.
The bearing setup is a "go to a good hardware and find the brass
nipple and shoulder bolt that fits well". Some brass nipples
have a burr on the inside diameter that makes it seem like the
bolt fits too tight. It should be a nice smooth fit which means
       you have about .002-.003" clearance.

       Hey all,
Sorry for never following up on this. I was able to find perfect
plate at Lowe's for about $12, worked out fine. The rest of the
build went together fine. The thing was spinning like a top. I
noticed in high wind conditions that the blades sort of "flexed"
out past vertical, and a severe thumping imbalance set in. I had
read in other posts that the steel cable stays might not provide
enough support. So I replaced them with 1/8"x3/4" aluminum
struts. Went out of town for a few days, we had a pretty severe
storm blow through while I was gone. I peeked up on the roof and
saw that one of the blades had broken off. And is *nowhere* to
be found haha. Probably flew to Kansas. The damage was pretty
bad, it broke up the fiberglass inside the coupler, and bent the
bearing spindle. So... I'm basically back to square one. I'll
need to repair the stator, and I'm just going to scrap the blade
assembly/rotor and rebuild with sheet metal blades. Frustrating,
but what are you gonna do. Anyway, here is a video of it in
       action prior to the explosion:

Sorry to hear of your windmill breaking up ! if you don't
balance them they will shake their self's to death . As for your
struts @LW uses stainless steel for his supports and is not a
bad idea. I have herd of straps breaking (banding pallet
strapping ) and causing a wing to tear of of the rotor.

I did the balancing procedure in the plans, with the rotor held
horizontally then rotated 45* at a time. Couldn't find a heavy
side. Is there some method to do a more dynamic balance?

That's the way I did mine and I don't have any trouble. You
could drill a hole in shaft of magnet plate (end that goes in
bushing ) and hang it like a plum bob.
