Solar charge controller for small projects...?

The web is awash with charge controllers for use with 12v
batteries and up but an apparent desert when it comes to
controllers for small projects.
Can someone point me in the direction of a circuit diagram, a
kit or a manufactured controller for use with charging a few AA
or AAA cells?
My ultimate goal isn't to charge AA/AAA batteries, it's to play
with the principles before scaling up and I have a couple small
project ideas that I think would work well as starters. I know I
could just match battery(s) to panel, add a diode so the
batteries don't bleed back and be done with it but the
controller seems far more useful...
Actually, here's a question, can I just use one of the larger
controllers for small (we're talking small 3-5 volt?) panels.
I'd preferably like to build it myself though...

Ahhh!
That makes perfect sense! I can proceed in peace then!
I'll grab some of the smaller lead acid batteries for the bigger
garden light projects
I have in mind and just pair panels with dry cells for the
smaller ones.
