I am adding second cam and air valve to remove the back
pressure. Will post results when available.
I received a donated engine for the second attempt. I will
probably mount a larger flywheel on its own frame and use a
drive shaft to connect it to the engine.

Hi, I completed the 2 stroke modifications. I add a second air
valve to release the back pressure that was created when the
piston returns to TDC. The first test did not go well. I will
have to adjust the cams and try again.

Another important consideration in good steam engine design is
the "clearance area". Clearance in steam engine 'speak' is any
area that has to be filled with steam before any work is done.
This includes passages between valve and cylinder head, space
between piston and cylinder head, and any passage to exhaust
before valve.
Clearance area has to be filled with steam and brought up to
pressure before any work can be done in the cylinder. Think of
it like hitting a piston with a pillow instead of a hammer.
Some clearance is unavoidable and desirable in a reciprocating
engine to prevent the piston from striking the cylinder head,
but clearance should be minimized.
I was working on a 2 stroke conversion recently but haven't had
time to finish it. I could draw the plans and since you are
such a prolific builder you could probably have it built in an
afternoon. It starts with the 2 stroke you have and just a few
simple parts. It is a simple uniflow bump valve actuated by the
flywheel. The trick is the timing is adjustable and the steam
is admitted at TDC for a short squirt. The cylinder and head
are insulated. I'll try getting it farther along tis weekend
and photograph.

Hi, adding the second air gun has created the condition that you
are describing. Thanks for the information. I look forward to
your results. I am fabricating a new cam to increase the steam
on time at TDC. If I do not see improvements I will remove the
second air gun and replace it with the right angle release valve
to remove the additional dead space at the input. Thanks again.

Interesting video using 2 cycle. It does not have a problem with
back pressure and reaches a high RPM. Maybe all I need is to
increase the Steam on time.
I should know more after today.

Hi, results from today's testing is really poor. The RPM's
decreased. Are all 2 strokes the same???? I have two engines.
One is manufactured with a totally smooth cylinder and the other
has a large groove running half the length of the power stroke.
I am going to swap engines to see if makes a difference.

What about a small displacement turbine?
That groove takes up some volume. (clearance area)
some specs on
air powered tools give psi as well as cu ft./ min.

Here is another converted 2 two stroke with really high RPM's.
It looks like the same engine I have without the groove or
recession in the cylinder wall. I was testing the engine with
the recession in the piston cylinder at 100 PSI and the results
are really bad, low RPM and no power. Maybe I will have better
results with the other engine.
