Hi, I started conversion of 2 cycle to steam conversion.
Downsizing engine before I make modifications to the boiler.
Brass fitting are pricey :o

A 2 stroke makes a good conversion because of the exhaust being
a perfect Uniflow port. Make sure to insulate everything above
the exhaust. The bash valve works OK if you have a long brass
nipple and get the right length of rod. It will wear a hole in
the piston in a short time. Good fun.....
Don't give up on the four stroke, its all about careful valve
lift and timing.

Hi, thanks for the info. Before I make modifications to the
boiler I want to see how a smaller engine will perform. I am
using a external cam and a rotative beam to trigger a air gun to
pulse the steam to the engine. I still have to mount a flywheel.
I should be testing soon.

It is not steampunk but looks like steam junk ;D The 4 stroke
works ok but the boiler does not supply enough steam and the oil
pan fills with water.

Hi, today's test results, after modifying the firebox I
basically fill it with wood and created a small chimney fire
inside the larger rocket stove. The larger fire did the trick.
Steam pressure maxed out in a matter of minutes. I ran the 2
cycle conversion for a more than a hour. The piston on the 2
cycle creates a back pressure on the way back to TDC so the RPM
never increased. I will have to add another cam and air valve to
solve the problem. Now that I know how to generate enough steam
I can test the 4 stroke again.
Manual operation of the monotube boiler is a balancing act
between keeping the fire hot enough and having enough water in
the tube. Lots of room for improvement but I am on the right
track. Now I can start to insulate the system.

Good work.
To solve the compression problem you will need to shorten the
"cutoff" (steam on time) This will allow you to run higher
pressure and put less stress on the boiler.
Ideally you want to conduct the exhaust away to a condensing
chamber so air doesn't enter the cylinder. If air enters the
cylinder it takes power to compress. Air may also be entering
from the 2 stroke's intake which then squirts into the cylinder
at BDC.

Hi, thank you for the information. I tested the 4 stroke and I
getting longer run times, but because the cylinder is larger it
is more difficult to maintain a constant pressure. The fire
would die down or I would pump to much water into the boiler. It
was fun to watch it run longer than 30 seconds.
So I can add more coils or just get a smaller engine. A smaller
double action would work better base on what I am observing.
After I insulate the system I should have a better idea which
direction to go. When the 4 stroke is running at a constant
pressure like 40 psi it has enough power and RPMs to drive the
F&P PMA.

Hi, thanks, the larger fire really solved a lot of problems.
Once I got it working, you can tell what is happening just from
the sound the boiler and fire is making. A 1/4 HP engine would
work well with this size boiler.
