       backyard helix..

       Hello members,
new member here...I would like to introduce my self..and my
       helix windmills....[img][/img]
the mill on the left has a 45w 3 phase alt....the mill on the
right is just yard-art....my prover of an idea...and blade
shape....a 'j ' shape blade based on the geo 222 lift blade....
I did a trial run with the lefthand mill to-day to see if it
would work....it was just bolted together for this
       trial....unloaded....she spun really well.....
over the next few weeks...I will glass the pieces
together...connect the load....and let her run....
not much info on the helix side of mills....
I will use Lynxs' 75 as a bench mark to compare to....
thank-you to member CG for posting the vid about the so-called
drag mills.....what''s a drag mill with lift type
       blades????.....

ok...it looks like my first post with a pic was successful
       .....lets begin ....[img][/img]
I purchased a Chinese 5 bladed mill on EBay for $250.00
aussie....I could see that the blades were crap....I was more
concerned about the 3 phase alternator....I took a gamble and
       purchased it...
it is a saiampower.com brand....I have checked out their web
site ...it is real... but lacking in detail in regards to the
       alt....
       mine is rated at 45w......
when I received the package I prized open the alt and I could
see chromed/nickel plated mags.....and the coil's were encased
in some sort of resin.....there is no cogging with this
       alt......
       my gamble looked promising.....
so plan A was to mount 3 off my j shaped helix blades onto the
central shaft....I did this today and bolted her
together.....placed her on the tower and watched...
she spins nicely with no load......
I have some glassing and balancing work to do....I will log
       things as they're done....

       as a load I will use this 45w set-up...[img][/img]
       3 x 15w light globes....this comes off an alternator from a
       steam turbine I have.....
I need to get some 3 core wire and some plugs to connect this
       up....
so in combination with a US made Cape Cod anemometer and a
bicycle rev counter ....I should be able to get a good
       understanding of whats going on...
       early days and baby steps...

some diameters and cord sizes for the mills....
right hand mill....spinner....600mm dia in the middle...1.2m
       long blade ...200mm chord
left hand mill..45w alt ..750mm dia in the middle....1m long
       blade ....150mm chord......
whats the point of a chord measurement????...when one has a j
shaped blade????....the cord measurement makes no allowance for
       the curve in a 'j'......

       hello CG....
my fault with the drag/lift thing....
I saw you're vid about the drag mills....very good
demonstration vid....it prompted me to post about my mills which
some might consider drag...but my blades are formed off a lift
       blade....
the term ...so called drag blades.... was a mistake on my part
       in relation to your vid...
but your vid was very informative....from my perspective....for
       what I'm working on...

       Welcome Tri-Lobe
I like what you are doing. Thanks so much for the pics. I
tried a Helical with a 36" x 36" swept area. The idea with the
helical is that it doesn't pulse as much as straight bladed. I
built a special jig to fiberglass the curved foam blades. Its
quite a curve! In 3D you are bending around a circle on a
       slant.
The chord length and diameter are still crucial and about a
50-60% solidity is needed for good performance. I use the
straight chord for the calculation even though the chord is
       longer on the slant.
About the Lenz design. It is considered a hybrid drag/lift
       design.
Here is a video of my Helical.

welcome to the board..@tri-lobe... i like that helix design
look very nice..eye catching design... i'm a newbie learning
about the vawt airfoil design concepts an wind flows .. dose
that cause a vortex air flow center uplift, in side the center
or outside wind force ? so it could put more energy wind
force to drive another vawt airfoil blade on top, inside or
outside another, stacking alternators /generator motors to help
drive one another s airfoil designs.. i like the combination
factors say a lux airfoil blade also be real neat to get a
combination sweeping updraft or outside wind foil energy force
to make wind.. so you could combine two actions at once to help
the other ..if that makes since... i have seen the savonius vawt
design with the lux stacked outside an a few others..just
       curious?

       Hello Lynx....
thanks for the reply and the vid of your helix......
if I may ask some questions???.....what sort of alt were you
running with this 36"x 36" mill ????....what was the output like
       in watts ???....
what revs was the mill doing when producing wattage ???
I'm asking the above questions so that I have a benchmark to
       compare my mill to....
I would also like to thank you for putting this website
together, there is some very interesting projects happening
here....I hope to add a build thread in the steam section
soon...just waiting on the last bits and pieces before
       posting...

       Hello hgl..
thanks for the reply and welcome...
I'm under the impression that there is not much happening inside
the mill....all the energy is happening on the circumference of
       the blades.....
and that is why I am using a 'j' shape blade...with the curved
       lip on the outside....
i'll get some pics of this posted up today....
       what is a lux blade?

       Tri
Ok, you asked. I don't like discouraging or being negative so
take this as my encounter. You may have better luck.
The alternator was a USVAWT Boreas capable of very good
efficiency and wattage. Voltage at 90 rpm was about 14 volts.
       Ohms at 5.6
The best I could get from this design was 15-17% of the power
available calculated from the swept area. I don't know why. It
was the same airfoil exactly 36" x 36" as the airfoil used on
the US VAWT prototypes that came very close to the Betz limit
       (42-45%).
The UGE urban green energy helicals do about 15% efficiency and
the designers make no apologies. I believe they have since
improved this slightly to 22% efficient.
The helical never seemed to break into high speed. It may be a
good slow speed TSR1 machine. I didn't like the looks when
spinning and I didn't like the low efficiency so I abandoned
this effort. When spiining it looks like the blades are
wobblling and out of round. When not spinning it's a sexy
       looking machine.
Later I worked with a team that made a larger version and it
worked pretty well, but sort of blew up at 60 mph when it was
       unloaded.
I have some theories about why it doesn't spin up related to why
it doesn't pulse. It never gets the hard kick.
