Tip Speed Calculator

These Lynx Wind VAWTs like to run at between 1.1-2.4 tsr What
the heck does that mean?
The blades on a VAWT are on the circumference whereas on a HAWT
it's just the tips. Ideally we want to run the wind turbine
fast and with torque. Torque x RPM = HP
So how can you tell what the TSR (tip speed ratio) is? The Tip
Speed Calculator is now available on the Lynx Wind website
(
HTML http://www.lynxwind.com
) under the menu tab "calculators" and
is setup for you to enter the diameter and then the rpm you see
at different wind speeds. You want to harvest power above TSR
1. I have never had good luck harvesting power much above TSR
2.0
You also can tell when a VAWT goes faster than the wind. As it
moves into TSR+1 the turbine shudders slightly and then speeds
up. Each blade is powering the rotor all the way around the
turbine and it doesn't matter which direction the wind comes
from.
You want to setup the alternator to cutin at above TSR 1.1

Just been watching my turbine in a 25mph wind and it keeps
rattling the pole then steadying out in higher winds....Is this
it going into a higher tip speed ?.
When the wind drops again the pole shakes again momentarily.
Don't know if the speed is increasing because it is dark out
there. :)

Yes, when the upwind blade is powering and the downwind blade
is slower than the wind, the pole will pulse each time it gets
the upwind blade power. When the blades power all the way
around it will smooth out. I like to design the VAWTs so this
occurs before cutin.
The chord length for your diameter is probably so big there is a
lot of drag.
Not having the angle set right can cause a similar problem.
Any chance you can cut a new larger rotor?

I'll see what I can do converting to Excel v5.0.
I did try using various converters to make the spreadsheet
active on a webpage. That was a no go so far.

@Lynx
Just a thought but what about making a executable file that
could be downloaded and used as a standalone program ?
Yes I could make a bigger rotor but see my last post in
re-build.....Things did change.
