       Well....she spins
By: ldissing Date: August 13, 2013, 7:09 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
I could not wait to get the stuff I need to get the SS straps
on, so I put her in the wind to see if she would spin and....she
did. Quite a lot of force on the pole, but she was going
pretty good....so I took her down to wait for the SS strap
install and then I will test the voltage output.
It was pretty cool, but spun backwards from the way I thought it
       should....guess I'm not too bright.

She is ugly right now. Unpainted but sanded and un-tethered.
I will get the stuff on and post some pictures when I am
finished. Don't want to sully the project, but I was really
glad she spun up and looked good while spinning.
The "bearing" is tight enough that I have to push it down to get
it to seat into the bearing when oil is in the tube...which is
cool, and she isn't tight when fully in that it is difficult to
spin, so I think it is a good fit.
Glad the foils did not fly off or anything....we were having
storms nearby, but just had to see it spin. No point in
painting and all of that if it doesn't spin in the wind.

       SS Straps
By: ldissing Date: August 17, 2013, 12:55 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Had to go buy a drill doctor to sharpen my bits....finally have
them all drilled....whew. That was a pain, because I bent them
like a moron BEFORE I drilled them and that made it very
difficult to drill....do not do that guys, drill them first.
I'm going to try putting the SS straps UNDER the blade tips and
on top of the foils themselves.
Q1: Do you think that is a "bad" idea. Since the blade tips
overhang the foils, it seems like a good idea, but I'm not
       really sure.
Q2: Since the blade tips should not overhang at the leading
edge, but should at the sides and the back....what is the shape
of the blade tips. Can you supply a drawing for the blade
       tips for maximum correctness?
I did not even have blade tips on the other day and it still
self started, but I want to get them on before I take it out for
       the first "real" test.
Then I will paint and get some pictures.

If you can put them under the tips that is fine. It may stress
the blade skin at high speed. But, I haven't found it to be a
huge problem. The blade tip can be an oval, or as CG showed.
The tips seem to improve performance about 15%.

So, at what wind speed should the VAWT start spinning in your
       experience?
After adding the SS and the blade tips...it will spin slowly
"sometimes" depending on wind speed, but never spins fast at
all. When I did it last week, there were some storms nearby
and the wind speeds were probably quite a bit higher, but the
weather channel app says 4-10 MPH most of the day, but no decent
       speed.
It does turn freely by hand, but maybe the added weight of the
       straps and screws?

       Ah, patience grass hopper. Kidding,
The problem is similar to watching a boiling pot. It may seem
windy, but usually what you think is wind is about 2-4mph. You
may want to get a quality anemometer. If you can't fly a kite
in the wind, there really is no power. It takes a few watts of
power in the wind to lift the kite and string.
Ok, depending on the quality of your bearing setup, the VAWT
should start at between 6-9 mph. Once spinning it will maintain
       at 2-4 mph.
One quick test is to walk with the wind. You will walk at about
3 mph. If while walking with the wind you no longer feel the
wind, then there is no way the VAWT will run. Another quick
test, is to note whether you hear the rustle of wind in your
ears. At 6-9 mph there will be a pronounced sound of wind in
       your ears.
If winds are 10+mph and the VAWT wont start, hand spin for
awhile (10 minutes) to break in the bearing. Hopefully you have
some lubricant in the bearing. After breakin, it will start
       with just a slight breeze.

The bearing is smooth, but break in would be nice also. Yes,
I do have lubricant in the bearing.

       Hi everybody
just received plans for the DIY 75 and looking forward to
building it! I am sure I will have a lot of dumb questions to
pester all here (or make you laugh ) but this is going to a
       great project .
The first question is about the magnet plates I noticed the the
optional magnet plate is a lot bigger than the paint can lid
design but the stator is the same . So why is this? I thought
placement of magnets in correlation to coils was critical. thx
       in advance
