Kind of cold out there...5 Deg C
Wind has picked up to about 6-8mph so I took her out for a
maiden test....
She started up no problem on her own.
She hit 12v charging voltage (just) at 180rpm.
Looking promising but she could be slightly out of balance, I
will address that problem once she is painted.

Perfect! That is right where cutin should be and at about 9
mph. On the small diameter you should see up to 800 rpm in high
winds. I have had the Gull 40 up to 1100 rpm and it is 20"
diameter.

This is a great story !! you brought something back from the
scrap pile, (Necessity is the mother of invention)

@ CG.....Nice to see you back on the forum.
I would not have thought that the dowels would have sheared but
they did. This time I made sure I had plenty of glue holding the
blade to the rotor.
Update..... Had a lazy day today...wind was fantastic for
testing (12-16mph) but it rained all day and until I get her
sealed against water I resisted the temptation to stick her out
there.

Your rebuilt wind turbine is about the size of one I built years
ago when testing. It had high solidity and was short like
yours. It ran very very well despite the "early days"
construction mistakes. Gradually I learned how and where things
broke and worked in better and stronger design.

@LW
Size does seem to be close but not too sure about the efficiency
of that alternator !...As you say these were your early models.
Looks as though the blades are a little slimmer (Is this a good
thing or bad thing ?). Great video.
@CG
The turbine was cut down in all dimension due to the pma only
delivering about 40w at 800rpm in the testing stages. Came to
the conclusion that the stock diy75 blades were just too much
for my area.

Had a nice dry day today but guess what...The dreaded 'No wind'
well very little anyway.
Wind was about 5-7 mph and decided to stick a dying and nearly
dead battery on it. Best I saw today with a little gust of wind
was 100ma @ 10.4v.
Recorded a little video using a key fob camera so pointing it in
the correct place was a challenge.
I also tested running 2 1w led's straight from the turbine but
would only flash when the NP booster was switched on.

Thanks for filming. I love videos because you can see what
people are doing in context. Looks like spring came earlier to
Scotland than Michigan. The trees are just budding here and
people mowed lawns for the first time today.
At 6 mph your size turbine should do about 1-1.5 watts, so it
looks like you are on the money. And, I wont disparage your
magnets again. They look like they are doing a good job.
You should see about 20 watts at 15 mph in clean air.
At 24 mph (where wind turbines are rated) you should see about
50-55 watts. Not bad for a small quiet wind turbine.

It was in kind of clean air but could be better, there is a big
difference between 4ft with the vawt and 22ft with the hawt but
this was only a test setup anyway.
My problem is that I compare the 2 turbines and I just have to
stop that, The hawt is capturing more wind than the vawt due to
its nature.
Need to cut the grass here very soon too !!!.
And those darn willows ;D

Well can you believe my luck...Huh.
Suppose I might as well paint her and give her some ' Go Faster
Stripes '. ;D
