Thank you for the response Crazyguy, I will look into this. I'm
just happy that the LJL will give me light... for now. Got lucky
this time and only fried the charger. The phone and the
transistor are ok. Thanks again.

Here is a copy of an email I sent in answer to a customer's
questions. Hopefully it will help others too.
1. Super easy to install the Diode 1N4001, 4005, 4007 etc
between base and emitter. I don't think there is an advantage
to switching the diode. I would just put it in a n leave it.
2. The one transistor is sufficient, but yes I have
experimented with two in parallel (place a 1 Ohm resistor across
the parallel bases)
3. I have experimented with putting the layers in series,
doesn't work as well. That's why I use a form of what I call
"Tesla Parallel". Tesla used the parallel bifilar setup in
pancake coils to great advantage. I see the same thing. very
clean high voltage spikes. I don't use three layers anymore. i
found two layers works just as well. I measure 6" across a 9"
length of 1.25" PVC and wind on 22 awg. Wrap with tape and then
apply a second layer. I put a hooked loop on the second layer
so its clear which layer is which.
4. "Runs Hot" really is slang for too many amps for the bulb
and yes the transistor runs hot too. The diode prevents a
negative bias on the base. Remember +/- is convention, but
really represents electron hole flow. Electrons really run from
negative to positive.
5. No, it is very difficult to measure the output voltage. It
wouldn't be very meaningful. It is very spikey DC output.
There is a slight AC component but it confuses multimeters. It
is better to measure DC amps in and multiply by volts. That
gives you watts consumed. The LJL has achieved 112 lumens/watt
which is better than running off grid power.

Hi all The other day I thought I would try making a joul ringer!
so I went into the garage and started looking for the parts . I
looked all through my collection of used electronic parts and
couldn't find a 2n3055 but I did find a 2n6052 so I figured what
the heck the # were close . Since I have no idea what the #
stand for and I will never use that transistor, I was not going
to loose much. The wire I had was close in awg (I miked it )
lets see 68 turns of 26 and then 10 turns of 24 awg Np hooked it
up and connected it to a 12 volt car batt took down one of my
compact florescent bulbs and it worked !. I didn't run it for
more than 30 sec. cause it started to get real hot but it
worked. Now I can't wait to get the proper stuff and build it
the way it should be made

The LJL will work with the base biased negative. In that design
the HV comes off the secondary and the emitter. It doesn't self
start as well and the transistor can run hotter depending on the
bulb. So basically a PNP transistor will work fine. The 2N3055
is just a very common and rugged power transistor.

the schematic was the same as the one used in lynx soln1 wound
on 4 inch pvc and as far as the hook up to the transistor, I
had to guess cause there was no marking on the used transistor

Hola Lynx, es una alegria saber que se trabaja en estos
experimentos, la verdad es que no entiendo mucho de electronica
y ahora me encuentro estudiando casi todo...quiero saber si
puedes subir algun esquema para poder guiarme en la construccion
de uno de estos prototipos, entiendo lo del bobinado pero aun me
falta saber cual es + y - de la bateria y claro cuales son los
que van a encender los leds...disculpen mi ignorancia...yo me
encuentro trabajando de lleno en otros experimentos como en una
cocina a leņa que no contamine y en celdas de hidrogeno...si les
gustaria saber mas hagan preguntas o veamos en otra
ventana....siempre y cuando lo autorice Lynx...saludos desde

Hi Lynx, is a joy to know that working in these experiments, did
not really know much about electronics and now I am studying
almost everything ... I want to know if you can add some outline
to guide me in building one of these prototypes, I understand
what the coil but I still need to know which is + and - of the
battery and clear which are the ones to light the leds ...
excuse my ignorance ... I am working completely in other
experiments as a wood burning stove that does not pollute and
hydrogen cells ... if you would like to know more ask questions
or see in another window .... as long as authorized Lynx ...
