Solar Cell Phone Charger

Not sure where to put this topic. It isn't solar heat, it isn't
a Soln1, it isn't a Joule Ringer DC/AC.
Its a solar cell phone charger. Its 2 vDC/Pulsed 22vDC
We work with RainCatchers.org to bring clean water to people in
Haiti. They install simple but effective rain water catchment
devices made from PVC tube, flashing, a filter and barrel. Seems
too simple, but is a Godsend.
He told me they need cell phone chargers...? What? Cell phones
were sold cheap to the people and they love them but they have
no easy way to charge them.
This Lynx Solar Cell phone charger is what we made for him. May
not be the answer, but it needed to be cheap, easy, and
manufactured cottage industry in Haiti.

In July of 2000, an American Airlines jet touched down on the
tarmac of the Haitian International Airport carrying sixteen
American teenagers from a small Detroit suburb. I didn’t know
then how this small, impoverished country would deeply impact my
life.

Only just found this topic,
I have a 4 cell (2v) panel that can output about 4 Amps in full
sun, My question is if I beef up the transistor and maybe the
coil awg will I be able to give some good charging power to a
12v battery.
The panel is just sitting on the wall doing nothing at the
moment so would be good to use it !!!.

Yes, I would suggest a 10-1 ratio and put a diode on the lead
out from collector to battery +, battery negative goes back to
secondary lead. You could use a 2N3055 or a TIP3055 transistor
instead of the 2N2222.

and i got a crap solar cell on there in decent light it only
puts out about 16 volts it says and it will only charge my
actual phone which is cheap junk another better phone i have
wont charge but i think its because the cell isnt putting out
enough... or have you guys experienced that it will only work on
like certain "dumb" phones or something?

lithium ion batteries in cell phones should only be charged with
the correct charger. They are very sensitive to overcharging
The charger is not just a step down transformer and a rectifier.
They actualy have a program inside a chip that allows "proper
charging ".
Charging with a diy dumb charger is detrimental to a lithium ion
battery. It can also cause it to short out and catch on fire.
Google "charging my cell battery ".
