       Torque On a Pole

The topic sounds a bit racy!
This last week Michigan saw some very strong winds. I noticed
something a bit funny looking on my Gull 160. The turbine was
slightly off kilter. I suspected something, but didn't have
snow shoes to make the journey to inspect. So, I shut down the
turbine with the stop switch. Note: See something out of
       sorts, inspect and correct.
The stop switch worked fine until winds reached 40-50 mph. Even
shorted the turbine was turning at 20-50 rpm. Left the house
for a couple hours and when I returned, no turbine! Just a
       pole.
There was so much torque the hub had twisted the 1/4" bolt
countersunk in the aluminum and bent it out of the steel
coupler. The aluminum then spun in the coupler, broke another
bolt in the pole and enlarged the other hole in the sched 40
steel pole. The turbine was upside down in the snow, and the
pole coupler had slid down the pole.
The turbine is back up, all the through bolts are more deeply
set and fixed with thread locker. I put Goop on the hub to
coupler to prevent vibration from loosening that join.
       1. If something looks wrong inspect and repair
       2. These VAWTs put out tremendous torque even at low rpm
       3. The entire support has to be unable to turn, poles will spin
in the ground, they will spin in clamps, make sure all fasteners
       are tight and locked.

that would make a great wind powered well driller ;D
Basically I just drill holes and put the bolts through and use
       blue locktite

And you with out pictures of damaged windmill !! I know you
sent out update to all of your owners ! Ever since I saw my
windmill pole turn in just the ground I have gained respect for
the force it can create . In spring (if it ever gets here ) I
will have to cement it in place because I got it in just before
the freeze and its just like being cemented in now . Thx for
       sharing LW
