       The Great Sundering

       A cataclysmic event that took place roughly 1,500 years prior.
       The Sundering is said to have been the retribution enacted upon
       mankind by the gods, angered at their lack of faith. Striking
       the land upon which the great Magi Coven was located on the east
       of the continent, a huge fissure was created which physically
       tore the land asunder. This near-impassible divide essentially
       destroyed the easternmost 15% of the continent, as none could
       reach beyond the impasse. On a more spiritual level, however,
       all those born after the Sundering are believed to have been
       tainted with impurity by the gods as punishment for their
       ancestors' sins. As such, all peoples of the modern era are
       significantly weaker when compared to their pre-Sundering
       counterparts. In regards to magic casters, specifically, the
       typical caster is now only capable of casting 1st tier magic,
       while a skilled caster can make use of 2nd tier spells; casters
       at this level are considered to have military value. 3rd tier
       magic is only able to be used by those of exceptional skill,
       with only around 10-15% of all casters being capable of reaching
       this level. Individuals considered to be masters of their art
       can wield 4th tier magic and this level of caster are both rare
       and powerful enough that the church lays claim to almost all
       known individuals. Only the exceptionally rare Godkin, with only
       a single one typically born every generation, are capable of
       casting 5th & 6th tier magic. These individuals are believed to
       possess the blood of the gods within them which enables such
       incredible feats to be performed.
