Natural Races
Human: The race which all of both the natural and supernatural
world are compared to, thanks to the hearty nature and ability
to adapt to practically any living environment. Humans are
nevertheless typically considered the weakest of the various
races, even amongst the other natural born. While they possess
no special trait intrinsic to their species, humans make up for
this with a sheer ruggedness that has allowed them to become the
dominant race of the land in terms of sheer populace.
Elf: Elves are a people typically possessed of tall, slender
builds; easily identifiable by their elongated, pointed ears.
Due to their ancestral birthplace among the elder forests the
elves are much more attuned to the spiritual aspect of the world
than the other natural races. This gives them a much higher
affinity for magic than either dwarves or humans typically
possess. In addition to this, most elf children find it
significantly easier to attune themselves to magic and learn
magecraft thanks to this heightened affinity.
Dwarves: Visually, dwarves are almost the opposite of elves. The
dwarven people are a short, stocky race which most commonly make
their homes in the mountainous ranges along the outskirts of the
continent; although that is not to say that a not insignificant
number do not make their way to reside within even the most
major of cities. Thanks to their typical choice of lifestyle,
dwarves tend to be quite gifted in their physical aspects in
spite of their short stature. Many often find work as
blacksmiths or other similar professions.
Faunus: Theorized by scholars to have originally been a subset
of humans, Faunus are a people who possess one to two
animalistic traits, such as cat ears or slit eyes, and otherwise
appear human. Because of these animal traits many humans look
down on the Faunus as little more than simple beasts.
Unfortunately, these groups have a significant amount of sway
and, as such, Faunus oppression is a very real issue even within
major cities.
Supernatural Races
Vampire: A creature which possesses a thirst for mortal blood
and must consume it in order to continue their own survival.
Vampires are a moonbound species and are physically harmed by
the presence of the sun; only being capable of withstanding its
rays for very short periods of time before being burnt to ashes.
Additionally, silver is lethal to vampires and is the main
weapon with which the mortal races have to combat these
creatures. Similarly, a wooden stake which pierces the heart is
capable of killing a vampire almost instantly. In spite of these
weaknesses, however, vampires are quite powerful. Their physical
attributes are superior to any of the natural races; they
possess stronger senses, enhances speed & strength, and have
much sharper reflexes. On top of that their magical affinity
surpasses that of even elves. Because of these factors combined
vampires are a significant threat. This threat is magnified even
more if a vampire's hunger goes unchecked for too long. If that
happens the vampire will go into a frenzy; the beast within
takes control of the vampire and goes berserk. During this
frenzy the beast will attack anything & everything in order to
sate its thirst for blood, and so long as the frenzy lasts the
vampire's powers are only magnified. However; so too are its
weaknesses to the sun and silver.
Pureblood Vampire: Whereas the common vampire is killed by the
sun's presence, a pureblood vampire can withstand being out
during the day. Depending on how recently fed the vampire is
their tolerance varies between intense (but mostly bearable)
pain to a feeling similar to the sensation of being pricked with
many needles. Purebloods refer to themselves as The Eight Lines,
a reference to the original eight bloodlines created by the
original vampire eons past. Those of the Lines lack nearly all
of the weaknesses of lesser, more common vampires. Beyond their
tolerance to the sun a stake to the heart will only paralyze the
vampire; putting them into a sort of trance-like state where
they appear all but dead on the outside while they retain full
consciousness and awareness of their surroundings. Silver is
potentially lethal, however, this lethality is situational.
Whereas common vampires beasts only reveal themselves when they
go into a frenzy, purebloods can manifest this change at will.
Doing so grants all of the powerful boons that common vampires
gain while frenzied with none of the lack of control. However,
while in this state a vampire of the Lines also enhances their
weaknesses. The sun becomes agonizingly painful, although still
not lethal, and silver goes from being a torturous pain to being
capable of completely killing the vampire.
A trait unique to pureblood vampires, or those of the Lines, is
a how their hunger effect them. While all vampires grow stronger
with age those of the Lines are also unique in that they can
expedite their growth by ingesting blood. Blood taken from a
mortal's dying heartbeat empowers a pureblood and enhances their
strength. The more those of the Lines kill those they feed upon
the stronger they become. However, this has a significant
drawback. While a vampire's hunger naturally lessens with age,
each life taken from feeding acts in opposite and increases
their hunger. This acts as a form of a game of balance for
vampires of the Lines; feeding to gain strength yet not as such
a rapid pace that their hunger outpaces their ability to
tolerate it from from their age. If a pureblood goes too deep
within their hunger, killing too many for power, it can
eventually drive them mad. This phenomenon is known as the
Calling. A pureblood within the Calling becomes all but
controlled by their lust for blood. Doing anything to get as
much of it as they can. Such powerful hunger typically drives
those in the Calling to madness, especially due to the fact that
the hunger is so great that they must gorge themselves on blood
increasingly often. Those within the deepest reaches of the
Calling must feed excessively every handful of hours in order to
stave off their hunger, with the pain being excruciating if they
fail to do so. To this day even the most gifted of vampire
scholars have found no cure for the Calling other than a swift
death.
Lycan: Lycans are a people capable of shifting into a wolf-state
and taking on an animalistic appearance. The actual degree to
which the lycan changes depends on the skill & experience of the
individual; ranging from a regular-looking wolf to a hulking
humanoid wolf-creature which towers over all but the tallest of
individuals. Regardless of the particular transformation, all
lycans possess lethally sharp teeth capable of easily rending &
tearing through both flesh and armor, while the more powerful of
those with more advanced transformations have deadly claws of
similar danger. Similarly to vampires, lycans physical
capabilities are significantly enhanced from those of the mortal
races. Compared to vampires, however, lycans have a
specialization in raw strength and are incapable of using magic.
In place of this magic, however, they possess an incredible
regeneration which puts even a vampire's healing to shame.
Silver is capable of halting a lycan's healing properties,
however, it offers no special harm beyond that. In order to
properly fight a lycan one needs a special herb called
Wolfsbane. This herb is toxic to lycans both in their human and
transformed states, but especially so while transformed. The
most effective tool the natural races have to combat a lycan is
through liquefied Wolfsbane which is applied to weapons.
