Maryland Bishop in Deadly Hit and Run Incident
By: Kerry Date: January 2, 2015, 7:29 am
---------------------------------------------------------
This story is almost impossible to believe. The Bishop
involved is Bishop Heather Elizabeth Cook. She ran down a
bicyclist. The police are refusing to say if alcohol was
involved or not.
What makes this story so interesting is that Cook was arrested
in 2010 on a drunk driving charge; but that didn't stop the
Episcopalians from making her a Bishop last September. From the
Baltimore Sun
HTML http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bs-md-ci-bishop-fatal-20141229-story.html#page=1:
A diocese spokeswoman told the Associated Press that Cook
disclosed the charges when she was vetted to become a bishop.
Caroline County District Court records show Cook was arrested
after police saw her driving under the speed limit on the
shoulder of the road on a shredded tire at 2 a.m. The officer
who pulled her over reported that the car smelled of burning
rubber and alcohol, and he saw vomit on her shirt.
A bottle of wine, a fifth of Irish whiskey and two baggies were
inside the car, police said. On the passenger seat in plain view
was a "metal smoking device."
She was charged with possession of marijuana, but those charges
were later dropped.
Cook told the officer she had been driving home from Canada and
had stopped in Pennsylvania to have a few drinks, police said.
Righto. A few drinks involves a fifth of Irish whiskey and two
baggies and a metal smoking device! Can you believe this story?
So now here we go again.
Moncure Lyon and other bystanders had stopped to help a badly
injured cyclist on Roland Avenue on Saturday afternoon when a
Subaru with heavy windshield damage drove by. Lyon wondered: Was
this the car that had hit Thomas Palermo and left the scene?
There was only one way to find out. Lyon, 65, jumped on his
Bianchi Steel Chromo bike and followed the vehicle as it drove
away. He caught up with it at a stoplight and continued to
follow as the car entered a nearby gated apartment community.
"I thought that car was involved in a potentially fatal
hit-and-run of a biker, and I needed to get that license plate
number," Lyon said Monday.
The driver — since identified by the Episcopal Diocese of
Maryland and her attorney as high-ranking bishop Heather
Elizabeth Cook — would return to the scene. Palermo, 41 a
married father of two young children, died of his injuries.
So she returned to the scene of the crime and then drove off
again! Isn't that pretty clear? The story goes on:
Bishop Eugene Taylor Sutton, the spiritual leader of the
Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, informed clergy of the incident
in an email Sunday.
Sutton told them that Cook "did leave the scene initially, but
returned after about 20 minutes to take responsibility for her
actions." He said Cook has been placed on administrative leave
"because the nature of the accident could result in criminal
charges."
That can't be true unless she returned a second time. According
to the man who followed her, she returned to the scene of the
crime and did not identify herself as the person responsible but
drove away again.
It sounds to me like something a drunk person would do; but a
witness said she appeared calm and collected when she came back
to talk.
Cook returned to the scene and talked to police. Peter Duhig, a
cyclist who also stopped at the scene, said she "seemed calm,
collected."
Jason La Canfora, a motorist who arrived on the scene shortly
after the crash and called 911, said Cook spent about 30 minutes
in the back seat of a police cruiser.
Why would a church promote someone with that kind of record?

Charges were filed against the Bishop. It is alleged that she
had been drinking and also that she was texting while driving
according to the Baltimore Sun
HTML http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/north-baltimore/bs-md-ci-palermo-announcement-20150109-story.html#page=1:
Bishop Suffragan Heather Elizabeth Cook, 58, surrendered to
police Friday afternoon and was being held at Central Booking. A
District Court commissioner set her bail at $2.5 million.
She faces numerous other charges, including leaving the scene of
the fatal accident in North Roland Park and driving under the
influence. Both the manslaughter and leaving the scene charges
carry a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby said that Cook's
breath alcohol level was 0.22 percent, nearly triple the legal
limit in Maryland, and that she was text-messaging at the time
of the collision.
I had wondered about that since the incident occurred around
2:30 in the afternoon. The mystery now is why she was
drinking so heavily in the afternoon and then trying to drive --
and more than drive, text while driving drunk. It's
astonishing.

They winked at her problems.

I wonder they might be saying they don't judge.
Perhaps but that's a lame excuse. We should not judge
people by thinking we know how they will wind up. We shouldn't
say to ourselves, "That person is so rotten, God couldn't help
him." There is another type of judgment which says, "I can see
the weaknesses of this person, and God could help him." But
yes, they could be thinking of this:
Luke 6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not,
and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be
forgiven:
Seeing someone has a problem and trying to help is judging the
situation in the right way if you ask me.
John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge
righteous judgment.
The last thing this woman needed in her life was to be made a
Bishop. A drunk driving offense doesn't mean she's a sinner
without hope; but it also doesn't mean she's a saint if she
promises to do better.
You may not always agree with Paul; but I would think the people
who elected her as Bishop would have. Paul said (1 Timothy 3:3)
people who are "given to wine" should not be made Bishops.
The early church also knew to look at someone's character before
making them a Bishop.
I bet this women told people how sorry she was about the first
offense and said it would never happen again; and they , took
her word for it and believed it. Anyone who's been around
alcoholics should know they often promise to stop drinking and
don't. You should wait to see if they stop before promoting
them. If they really stopped, you should be able to see it.
I believe if people learn from their past mistakes and have
truly repented, you can see it in their deeds. Someone who has
stopped drinking is very good at dealing with people who want to
stop. They understand how it is. That's why AA works -- the
people there all used to drink themselves, and they aren't going
to get conned by lies. They understand the problems of
alcoholism and they want to help people stop drinking and
lying. Yes, someone who used to drink and who has stopped is a
very good person indeed, able to help others. We can't judge
anyone who drinks then because we don't know how things will
turn out. We can judge situations though. This is "bad fruit"
here. It doesn't mean the woman is going to hell, of course
not. Maybe this will sober her up.

This story keeps developing. It turns out that the delegates
who voted to make her a Bishop didn't know about the criminal
charges. Church officials knew about them since she had told
them; but they didn't tell the people. From juicyecemenism.com
HTML http://juicyecumenism.com/2015/01/09/maryland-bishop-charged-baltimore-hit-run/:
Diocese of Maryland officials have acknowledged that delegates
who elected Cook in May were not told that she had been charged
with driving under the influence of alcohol in 2010, an incident
in which her blood alcohol level was .27 and she was found in
possession of an open whiskey bottle, two bags of marijuana and
marijuana smoking paraphernalia. The information was disclosed
to a search committee that vetted candidates, but was not
relayed to bishops and standing committees across the church
that consented to her election.

Isn't she in the leadership position? She should not have
alcohol problem in the first place. They are mocking God by
putting her in leadership position.

Well I guess it goes to show what having good connections can do
for someone.
Like the Bishop in New York City who knew Mayor de
Blasio? De Blasio got his buddy the Bishop out of jail when if
it had been anyone else, he would have spent the night.
A politically connected Brooklyn pastor was arrested for a pair
of open warrants — but was spared a night in jail after Mayor de
Blasio called an NYPD boss to inquire about his close pal .
Hours later, Bishop Orlando Findlayter was yukking it up with
Hizzoner at the head table at a Bed-Stuy breakfast Tuesday with
guest speaker Rev. Al Sharpton and 200 other pastors.
Findlayter — the head of Brooklyn’s New Hope Christian
Fellowship who was instrumental in delivering the black vote to
de Blasio — was pulled over at 11:21 p.m. Monday in East
Flatbush for making a left turn without signaling, police said.
Cops ran his license plate and discovered two outstanding
warrants, issued Jan. 16, for failure to appear in court for
prior arrests at protests. He was hit with the traffic violation
and charged with driving without a license.
Findlayter was looking at a night behind bars because the
arrests came too late for him to be arraigned.
So his clergy pals reached out to the mayor and the NYPD.
Hmmmm. It goes on:
A police source said Findlayter later appeared before a judge
and the warrants were tossed.
Lehr, as commanding officer, was allowed to free Findlayter at
his discretion if he believed the bishop didn’t pose a threat,
said top NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis.
But Sgt. Ed Mullins, president of the Sergeants Benevelent
Association, cried foul.
“If a guy has a warrant, you don’t let him go. Period,” he said.
“There is no ‘discretion.’ What if you release him [and] he
drives a block, blows a red light and runs somebody over and
kills him? As a [police] supervisor, you have a lot to answer
for.
Why were the warrants tossed? Another story later from the
Wall Street Journal
HTML http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2014/05/01/bishop-findlayter-appears-in-court-for-traffic-stop-that-drew-mayors-call/<br
/>says:
The initial stop came because Bishop Findlayter, a member of Mr.
de Blasio’s inaugural committee, failed to signal while turning,
according to a police report.
He was arrested because he had a suspended license stemming from
outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court related to
an Oct. 16 arrest during an immigration protest in Manhattan.
Mr. de Blasio learned of the arrest, and called Deputy Chief Kim
Royster, a top NYPD official, to ask about it.
Chief Royster called local precinct’s commanding officer, Deputy
Inspector Kenneth Lehr, who knew the bishop personally. He said
he was already on his way to release the bishop.
The mayor and Police Commissioner William Bratton have said
there was no impropriety in the case. Both have defended the
inspector’s actions.
But experts and former police officers said there is noting in
the police guidelines that give commanders discretion to release
suspects wanted for an outstanding warrant.
Asked about the mayor’s call, Mr. Pollard said he had no
comment. “To me that has nothing to do with the case,” he said.
That story made me wonder how the Mayor's relationship with the
police would go. The current state of their relationship is
strained, to say the least, with them turning their backs on him
at funerals. The Bishop has had other problems with the
law. The Daily News
HTML http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bailed-out-bishop-artist-bounced-check-recipient-article-1.1620636<br
/>had a piece on him.
Meanwhile, Alfonso Ordde, 39, who owns Shiloh Services, sued
Findlayter in April, claiming an $11,400 check for 11 buses
bounced. Ordde said Findlayter rented the buses to ferry CUSH
members to a March 21 immigration protest in Washington.
Ordde is convinced the preacher, who lives in a $579,000 Long
Island house, knew the check would bounce.
“He’s a con artist who uses his influence as a preacher to
defraud people,” Ordde railed.
He's also been invited to the White House --- story at the

If I have time, maybe I'll dig up the stories about Bishop
MacManus. He got his charge of drunk driving dropped. He's
quite the fellow. I could write lots about him.
