Re: Congressional Goings On

I do not know what to think about all the people running to
replace Congressman Jackson from Illinois; but some of them seem
dubious at best.
I heard talk that his wife, Sandi Jackson, whose company got
paid for doing campaign work for him while doing no work, was
interested. That could be interesting because she too could
see jail time for her part in things. She's been talking to the
feds about things, perhaps incriminating her husband? Who knows
what's happening there? (Story at myfoxchicago.com
HTML http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/20211440/jesse-jackson-jrs-wife-sandi-could-face-jail-time-exclusive)
Then there's talk maybe his brother will run?
The previous Congressman, Mel Reynolds, said he wanted to run.
Reynolds was convicted of having sex with an underage campaign
worker and of federal fraud.
From the Chicago Tribune, November 29
HTML http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-11-29/news/ct-met-second-congressional-race-20121129_1_campaign-fraud-charges-underage-campaign-volunteer-mel-reynolds:<br
/>
One sign urged voters to "re-elect" the former U.S.
representative "so he can finish the work" that was interrupted
when he was convicted of crimes that included having sex with an
underage campaign volunteer. Another sign featured a bold red
background and white letters that said simply: "Redemption."
Now another contender was arrested this morning trying to
smuggle a gun onto an airplane! Also from the Chicago Tribune
HTML http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-state-senator-charged-with-trying-to-board-plane-with-weapon-20121205,0,6048413.story:
State Sen. Donne Trotter, who is seeking the congressional seat
vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr., was arrested this morning at
O’Hare International Airport for attempting to board an aircraft
with a firearm, officials said.
Trotter, a Chicago Democrat who has served in the state
legislature since 1988, was charged with a Class 4 felony and is
scheduled to appear in bond court on Thursday, according to a
spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.
Other people interested include Debbie Halvorson who ran against
Jackson in the primary (losing about 70% to 30%), Alderman
Anthony Beale, state Senator-elect Napoleon Harris, and state
Senator Toi Hutchison.
Hutchison's state district covers much of the federal Second
Congressional district. If I had to wager on it now, I'd pick
Hutchison in this race. The election is set for April 9.
Illinois politics are surely interesting.

Thadeus McCotter is back in the news! You know, the fellow
mentioned in reply #3 of this thread. Now he's describing
himself as "a simple country lawyer from Detroit and a
recovering Congressbum," and he's written a short story. I
didn't read it since it was too bizarre and gruesome for my
tastes. You have been warned it's not worth your time; but if
you have time to waste, as the ex-Congressman must, go ahead.

I bet you thought Mormons didn't drink, but Senator Crapo was
caught doing just that. He has said in previous interviews
that he does not partake of alcohol; but early Sunday morning,
he was stopped for running a red light in Virginia and found to
be "under the influence."
HTML http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/274471-report-sen-crapo-arrested-on-dui-charge
He won his last election handily with about 70% of the vote; but
about one fourth of the voters in Idaho are Mormons. Time will
tell if he sees serious competition if he chooses to run again
in 2016. So much for his reputation as a staunch social
conservative. . . .

One campaign season is over, time to get going on the next one.
The first challenger for the seat of colorful Congressman
DesJarlais has appeared. State Senator Jim Tracy says he's
planning to run in the 4th District in the primary in 2014. He
said, “I promise that I will never embarrass you with my
personal conduct or compromise on my conservative principles.”

No doubt, perhaps he has learned his lesson (to be a better
crook and less likely to get caught next time) and will rejoin
his comrades in politics.
He may do something else. He's very well educated so he
has lots of options. It looks to me as if he's a very energetic
person and needs a job where he doesn't get bored. From
Wikipedia
HTML https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Jackson,_Jr.:
He and his brother Jonathan were sent to Le Mans Military
Academy in Rolling Prairie, Indiana after Jackson was diagnosed
as hyperactive. He was often paddled for disciplinary reasons
during his time as a cadet. Jackson repeated ninth grade and was
suspended from school twice. He was an all-state running back
on his football team in high school and was featured in a the
February 1984 issue of Sports Illustrated as part of their Faces
in the Crowd section, which noted him for his 15 touchdowns, 889
rushing yards, and 7.2 yards per carry in six games. Jackson
enrolled in North Carolina A&T University, his father's alma
mater, earning his Bachelor of Science degree magna cum laude
in 1987. He decided to follow his father's advice to receive a
seminary education at the Chicago Theological Seminary, where he
earned his master's degree a year early but opted not to become
ordained. Jackson proceeded to law school at the University of
Illinois and convinced his future wife to transfer there from
the Georgetown University Law Center. He then earned a Juris
Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Illinois College of Law in
1993. Jackson never sat for the bar exam despite finishing his
coursework a semester early.
In a way, I think he may be wise to stay away from political
circles in Chicago and Washington -- where the climate of
corruption appears to have gotten to him. Time will tell, I
guess if he decided to be smarter with the corruption or if it's
really smarter to be honest.

Congresswoman Corrine Brown (5th District Florida) is not happy.
Her district may be gerrymandered; but appears to agree with
the Republicans on this. From tampabay.com
HTML http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/the-buzz-florida-politics/rep-corrine-brown-calls-redistricting-ruling-seriously-flawed/2236752:
Super strong statement from Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Jacksonville,
about today's redisctricting ruling by the Florida Supreme
Court. Brown's snake-shaped Congressional District 5 is one of
eight districts the court ruled have to be redrawn for the 2016
election. Here's Brown's statement:
“The decision by the Florida Supreme Court is seriously flawed
and entirely fails to take into consideration the rights of
minority voters. It also fails to recognize federal law, in
that it did not incorporate the spirit of the 1964 Voting Rights
Act, which protects minority voting rights and clearly
supersedes the contradictory standards set by the state’s Fair
Districts requirements.
“Prior to the 1992 election, Florida had not had a federal
African American representative since Josiah Thomas Walls, in
1871, a time span of 129 years. Nationally, prior to the
passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, between the years of
1832-1965 (133 years), there were only 28 elected African
Americans. From 1965-Present (49 years), there were/are 103
elected African Americans (four times as many, in nearly
one-third the time span)."
The Republicans love this kind of thinking. Although there are
more Democrats in Florida than Republicans, through the magic
of gerrymandering, there are 17 Republican members of Congress
and only 10 Democrats.
It reminds me of how the Bush administration once filed a
lawsuit saying there weren't enough black districts in a
particular state. They won. They got more Republicans in
office since they could gerrymander and put so many black
Democrats in one or two districts and then win most of the rest.

Ex-Congressman Jackson is back. From the Baltimore Sun
Former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson was released from a
federal prison camp in West Virginia to a halfway house, a
Federal Bureau of Prisons official said.
Jackson was not expected to be released from the camp in
Alderson, W.Va., until next month. But she became eligible for
home detention on Sept. 13, when the official said she was
transferred to a residential re-entry center, or halfway house.
ABC7 has learned she will end up staying in a private residence
in Washington, D.C.
The official said Jackson is still under the bureau's
jurisdiction in community confinement. The location of the
halfway house was not disclosed. Jackson's final release date is
Oct. 18.
Three years ago, Sandi Jackson pleaded guilty to filing false
income tax returns. She was sentenced to one year in federal
prison, to be served after her husband, former Congressman Jesse
Jackson Jr., served his sentence for spending campaign money for
personal use.
This was done in consideration for the couple's two children.
The ex-congressman completed his prison sentence last year.
Sandi Jackson served Chicago's 7th Ward. She was elected in
2007, but resigned in 2013. She married into the Jackson family,
led by its patriarch, the Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. He heads
the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and has been a civil rights leader
for decades.
The former alderman was released on her 53rd birthday.
Remember Joe Wilson who became famous nationally for shouting,
"You lie" at President Obama during a State of the Union
address? In case you missed it. . . .

Well, Joe Wilson got some of his own medicine at a town hall

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A South Carolina Congressman
got an earful Monday night from the people he serves across the
region.
Republican Joe Wilson held a town hall meeting with folks at
Aiken Technical College Monday where the Republicans' plan to
repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act drew some cheers and
plenty of boos and criticism. While he stopped to talk before
and after the meeting, there were some not in favor of what he
had to say.
Boos and chants fill the gym while cell phone videos roll at
Congressman Joe Wilson's town hall meeting at Aiken Tech. The
State's Second Congressional Representative spoke about several
issues and topics throughout the evening, but his stand on
healthcare drew the most jeers from the crowd of over 100.
