Re: What's happening to the Church?

I saw an add recently about a new(er) program that does not
involve admitting powerlessness over addiction...for instance,
like the 12 Step program does that is based on
scripture/dependence on God. It seemingly touts in fact that the
opposite is encouraged. That we DO have power over our
addictions...and I've heard that the program has a pretty good
success rate.
I bring this up to put in my 2cents (well, maybe 1 cent worth?)
to the discussion about sin in the last few posts. I have
thought about this before and thought this would be a good time
to bring it up.
I wonder if making a priority of preaching against sin...as many
churches do...is basically doing what that newer program is
doing, only within 'Christian walls'. In my mind and as far as I
see in scripture (as a whole and in context) is that preaching
against sin should only be done 2nd to preaching about
relationship with Christ...because without Christ one has no
(well, maybe temporary) power over sin. So, lets say people do
hear what the preacher or the program is saying and do stop
sinning...I still wonder in these instances if we are doing them
any good, as they may be having some success over their problem,
but if they don't have Christ then what do they have really?
I definitely agree and can see Kerry's viewpoint that sin is
harmful...which is a very good way to approach the
topic...because it is! But I've been in churches and/or have
heard preachers preach against sin Sunday after Sunday - how
terrible it is - and how God hates it - and on and on it
goes....then Christ, who IS the One who holds the power over
sin, comes in at 3rd or 4th place as far as being preached
about/being important.
To me I don't understand how we can lose sight that the only way
to have complete victory over sin is through a close walk with
Jesus....as He not only helps us overcome but gives us something
to live for to replace the sin we've given up. Christ fills us.
Additionally, even aside from the sin issue, having Christ in
our lives is still the most important thing. Therefore
relationship with Christ, and learning to follow His lead is the
One thing that (I think) must be preached much much more than
sin or anything else.
IMO,
Jella

Amen, Jella.
Very well said. I think I agree totally. (Read once, tired...
but still... nothing prompted anything close to a slight mental
frown. :) )
Christ is the power over sin... who the Son sets free is free
indeed. Amen.
I should say imo!
You made me LOL, James. :)
Personally, and just MHO, I think it would be great if going to
church meant worshipping and socializing together with other
believers. I don't much enjoy sitting in front of an
evangelistic type preaching person….meaning the type who heap on
condemnation, then present Christ as if he is a glass of ice
water to grab before falling into a fiery pit,
I do like listening to the teaching type, but I think that is
better when done in a room where there can be some interaction.
I haven't been a member of a church here in over a decade…..I
couldn't sign a statement of faith in good conscience since I
don't agree with them. Some churches now have a tithing
agreement they want filled out and signed….want your income
info, and a 10% pledge---and prefer if you set it up as an
automatic transfer from your bank account to theirs. SIGH!

Wonderful post Laurie..I wish you were not so busy and could
post more often...I miss your post...why you do post you hit the
nail right on the head! Amen!
In reference to your post we could be twins. :D
Dave and I went to a nice church for a year, loved the word the
pastor gave and loved the worship..( I don't agree with 'one
church one preacher'...but that is another issue )
We liked the church. Then it started...they wanted us to become
members, wanted a signature on a dotted line..and all that you
mentioned.
Obviously our comfort with that church changed, we felt like we
were 'outsiders and rebellious' as we could not agree with
membership and all it required.
Totally un-scriptural.
Keep 'em coming Laurie! ;D
