The News

Have you ever noticed that a lot of the news is not new? Today
is D-Day, and the news people are talking about that; but
however you cut it, that's not news.
Then you may have noticed too that much of the news is
speculations about events. If something is a mystery, it gets
discussed at great length. The talking heads spin their
theories. Government committees and federal agencies promise to
investigate. But so often if and when the "facts" do become
known, they aren't reported on the news. Rumors and innuendos
must make better ratings.
The most successful news channels seem to be those that make
people either afraid or angry. They convince people they need
them to tell you what dangers are lurking out there. Talk
shows are like that too. The world is so bad, you'd better
listen to their shows because they'll tell you what dangers to
look out for.
Of course, politicians do the same thing. If you can make
people either afraid or angry and convince them you're the
fellow who will save them, they'll going to vote for you! Sad
to say, some ministers do this too.
What do all these people have in common? They make a living out
of talking. They produce nothing real that you can eat or drink
or things like cars and houses. Just words. They're selling
words.
Now words can be useful, don't get me wrong. If you can use
words to convey meaningful ideas to people so they can grow more
wheat or improve the water we drink, that kind of words relate
to reality; but so many of the words people get addicted to
don't relate to anything. They're just inspiring fear or anger.
The prostitute or the drug pushe ron the street is more honest
than some of these high-profile figures that are admired. At
least you get something other than mere words for your money.

It's been that way for quite a while now, hasn't it? I seldom
turn the television on these days….if something big, or new,
happens I'm sure I'll hear about it from someone.
My kids and I would almost feel sorry for the "on the scene"
reporters who would be standing on the dark corner. or in front
of the closed building, where something had happened earlier.
Then there are the ones standing in water and rain trying to
report the big storm and the gusts just aren't gusty enough so
they end up looking a bit silly.

^ What is that all about anyway? The reporters think we might
not believe them if they told us there is bad weather unless we
see them out there in it?
And standing on a dark corner or in front of some building?
What valuable information is being conveyed by that?
The latest trend is wanting to be first. It used to be the
reporters had to meet a deadline. Most of the time, they could
do enough research that probably they had most of the facts
right. Now it's more about being first. They often get
things wrong and have to say so later. This is getting so bad,
I don't pay much attention to "breaking news."

I really wonder how much of ANYTHING we are told is really true
at all!! When we lived in England we did used to hear news, real
news...both on TV and in the news papers.
We were amazed when we arrived here ( 38yrs ago) and saw a news
paper or two...total black out on news esp world news. What was
not in the papers shouted so loud.
I remember asking people about it, and telling them that the
papers were rubbish and not reporting anything. They were so
used to not having 'real' news papers they didn't know any
different.
Probably England and the whole world has now caught up to "no
news is normal" and satisfied with breadcrumbs of foolish
stories that keep their attention away from what is really going
on!!

[/quote]A lot of the British papers are rubbish now. One of the
cast from Monty Python was talking about it not too long ago.
He named two papers he thought were still good: The Guardian
and another. There had been those terrible but amusing tabloids
for years, of course; but now so-called "respectable" papers are
more what you'd expect from the tabloids. The Guardian is
still good. It reports stuff from America before the American
papers. My guess is the Americans wouldn't print it if they
weren't shamed into covering some real news.
Rupert Murdoch's wrecked papers on both sides of the Atlantic.
I mean really now, is hacking the phones of the royal family the
way to collect real news? Why would reporters do that unless
the culture at the papers was such to encourage it? If I owned
a paper, the reporters would know I'd fire them if I ever caught
them doing such a thing. And who cares, truly, what the royal
family is saying in private conversations? It's their
business! Let them alone!
Murdoch bought the Wall Street Journal. I never subscribed to
it; but from time to time, if I was thinking about buying or
selling stocks in my retirement account, I'd buy a copy to check
out stock prices, earnings and dividends. The last copy I
bought will be the last. It had almost nothing in it I wanted.
Both Canadian and American news organizations have always been a
little insular I think. It's probably the result of being
between two oceans and feeling what happens "over there" is far
away and doesn't matter much. I think that attitude is worse
though in the USA since so many Americans also think of
themselves as being superior and above it all and that what
happens elsewhere doesn't matter. Consider how shocked
Americans were by 9-11. Did they really think something like
that could never happen here?
My reaction was, "I'm surprised something like that hasn't
happened sooner." It didn't frighten me half to death. I
tried to go to my bank which is just a little branch office. It
was closed. Huh? How crazy was that? Obviously the terrorists
had picked high profile targets. Did that little branch office
think terrorists were coming after them next? Yes, "First
we'll fly planes into the Twin Towers and Pentagon, and then
we'll go to Carlisle and terrorize a little bank." I couldn't
believe how people went into such a panic.

Good post Kerry. Yes, much of it is fear-mongering...the papers
are either stupid stuff or scary stuff, the Tv too. I think they
are turning our brains into mush...and for the most part, I
think that already people have been programmed how and what to
think.
Someone told me once, yet I have not checked it...that the word
amusement , a muse ment=
is the 'art of not thinking'. Sounds good to me, true or not!

God help us all…
At one point I thought that nothing could surprise me any more…
But my sister in law sent me a link to a”pastor “ in her church
service “praying” a creed starting -
