Paul vs Peter.

It is postulated by certain biblical scholars that, more than
the rift between Paul and Peter regarding Paul’s teachings that
Judaism was superceded by Christianity, there was also confusion
in respect of many other issues.
In which context I have to agree that I see apparent conflict
between the following two passages concerning mankind’s final
state.
On the one hand I see:-
“I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not
worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in
us.
For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the
manifestation of the sons of God.
Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the
bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children
of God.
For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain
together until now.
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the
firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within
ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of
our body. (Romans 8:18-23)
Whereas on the other hand I see:-
“By the word of God the heavens were of old; the earth standing
out of the water and in the water:
However the world that then was, being overflowed with water,
perished:
But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word
are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of
judgement and perdition of ungodly men.
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in
which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the
elements shall melt with fervent heat, and the earth also and
the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what
manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and
godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of
God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and
the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens
and a new earth, wherein righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:5-13)
Any thoughts Kerry (on a level that I can follow ;))

Although those statements can be applied to the end of this age,
I see them discussing the end of that age. They both seem to be
writing of events about to happen shortly. I think both
prophecies came to pass as predicted; and I expect them to be
replayed again with a fuller fulfillment.
What parts do you think seem to conflict?
I don't think Peter is writing about physical events that could
be observed. There was never a time when the earth stood "out
of the water and in the water" in literal physical terms. He's
discussing the "old earth" and its relationship to the two lower
heavens of upper and lower waters as it existed before Noah. A
"new earth" came into being after the flood; and Peter is saying
another "new earth" is about to arise, but this time by fire --
meaning the "new earth" would have a relationship with the third
heaven of fire. The false gods of the pagans were about to be
defeated and their followers and supporters on earth judged.
I see Peter going to the center of spiritual wickedness in Rome
and dealing with it.
