Gunsmoke

I heard this radio episode before. When it came on again, I
thought I'd post a link to it. I think it was one their best
maybe. This is the television version.

You can also download just the audio of the radio show at:

There is another episode I'd like to post about a Christmas Eve,
but I forget the title.

I have not seen the television version of this. I'm listening to
the radio version the second time now. I think it's an
accurate portrayal of how abusive people can use religion. This
episode is called "Kangeroo."

I wonder why it seems that everything older is much better...but
it sure seems to be doesn't it. Good triumphs over evil.
Everything seems negative now.
I don't miss television. I got so tired of it, I didn't
bother to buy an adapter when the broadcasting standard changed.
I did like the ending. He couldn't help his father who was
dead; but he still tried to show respect by putting his hat on
him; and I was moved when he took care of his brother, putting
his coat under his head. I wondered if that would change his
brother? Would his brother see that love was possible?

This episode is called "Drop Dead." I've heard it before; but
I'm listening to it again now on
HTML http://www.20thcenturyradio.com
. Here it is from You Tube. It
left me asking, "Was that a coincidence or did God do it?"

This episode of Gunsmoke has an interesting title, "Categorical
Imperative." Immanuel Kant in Dodge City? The person who
posted this at You Tube says:
Some Dodge City residents just can’t figure out U. S. Marshal
Matt Dillon sometimes. You see, he’s been holding a known cattle
rustler in jail for several days until his trial. Everyone knows
he’s guilty, but there’s no solid evidence against him. The
judge will just have to let him go. When the prisoner overpowers
Matt’s assistant Chester Proudfoot and escapes during one of the
worst blizzards in Dodge City’s history, Marshal Dillon sets out
to bring him back. Why bother? Well, that’s what most people are
asking. There’s no sense to it, no logic. Setting off in a
blizzard and risking your life to bring back a fellow that’s
going to go free anyway? To Matt Dillon adherence to the law
takes precedence above everything else. That’s why he must do
his sworn duty.
Well, how do things turn out? That’s the story Southbridge Old
Time Radio brings you today with the January 20, 1957, episode
of “Gunsmoke” titled “Categorical Imperative.” Here’s Marshal
Dillon riding up now with the story.
I won't spoil the story by telling you too much of it; but I
think the ending has a powerful message that tells us if we do
what we know is right no matter what, sometimes it can make a
difference.

I have not listened to the episode, Kerry, but I am struck by
how the sense of duty in the police prevents them from falling
into the anger that leads to "street justice" and other forms
of vigilantism that eventually gets them into trouble. Anger
management can be a problem for a police officer and so duty and
discipline, strictly maintained can be a guard against it. It
also, gives a sense of nobility to the police that is highly
admired when it is sensed in the public.
To talk of the Categorical Imperative, I will need to listen to
it. Interesting that the radio writer and producer had been
reading or thinking of Immanuel Kant.
Peace be with you!
I don't think you'll be disappointed. There are at
least two instances where Marshall Dillon follows his ideas of
the categorical imperative and the judge has one. Perhaps
there's more.

This episode is called "Amy's Good Deed." Do you think lies
can ever be good? Well, there are two lies in this that I
think were fine lies. The Doc tells one, and Matt tells one.
I also like how Matt does a good deed and doesn't try to take
credit for it.
I heard the radio version first but here's the television
version.
