^ Good to see you back and posting, Heartsong.
The line about waking up frightened in that song reminded me of
something. I don't know if it is important enough to talk
about; but one of my cats has nightmares sometimes. She makes
a cry as if someone is beating her or chasing her. That's the
cat that had half her whiskers cut off when she came to live
with me. Someone must have been very unkind to her. If I got
my hand next to her head, she would cower in fear.
The other day she was downstairs and started crying like that.
When I got down there, she was awake -- so I don't know if she
was dreaming or just in a fearful mood; but when I got her to
come upstairs to eat and tried to pet her, she cowered again at
my hand. I thought she was over those bad memories. It taught
me something about people, I believe. And about God too. If we
have bad memories, we find it hard to trust God. So it seems to
me. If things go wrong, we may fall into the old patterns of
things, cowering before God, frightened of the world and of God
too.
Right now, she's asleep right by me. Sometimes she sleeps by
my head purring as she goes to sleep. That's when she's in a
trusting mood, not frightened by the old memories. Oh, if only
we humans could feel safe around God and go be near Him. . . .
I think I've learned something about sin too from her -- why
humans strike out at each other. When she gets in mood like
this, she stares at the other cats as if afraid they want to
jump on her; and that makes them nervous, and then they do want
to jump on her or bat at her with their paws. Her being in
fear and wanting to bat at them with her paws puts them in fear
too and makes them want to bat at her.

Our little dog Becky has nightmares. Her body goes into
repetitive spasms and twitches accompanied by muffled yelpings
sounds.
